Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The black SUV remained parked outside.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The coffee shop suddenly felt too small.

My father stood in front of me instinctively.

A protective wall.

Melissa looked terrified.

“That’s Daniel.””

I stared at the vehicle.

“Are you sure?””

She nodded.

“I’d recognize that car anywhere.””

My father looked toward the exit.

“Emma, stay behind me.””

I hated that sentence.

Not because I didn’t appreciate him protecting me.

Because I was tired of always being the person things happened to.

I had spent months believing I was building a family.

Instead, I was surrounded by people making plans about my life without me.

“I’m not running anymore.””

My father looked at me.

“Emma.””

“No.””

I stood.

My leg still hurt.

Every step reminded me of Diane’s attack.

But I forced myself forward.

“I spent too long letting them decide what I could handle.””

Melissa grabbed my arm.

“You don’t know what he’s capable of.””

I looked at her.

“Neither did I know what Diane was capable of.””

The door opened.

A man walked inside.

He was older.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

Calm expression.

The kind of person who looked harmless until you looked closer.

Daniel Whitmore scanned the room.

Then his eyes landed on Melissa.

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

He knew exactly why she was there.

He walked toward us.

“Melissa.””

Her face tightened.

“Daniel.””

He smiled.

A cold smile.

“I was wondering when you would finally decide to tell the truth.””

My father stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

Daniel looked at him.

“And you must be Emma’s father.””

My stomach tightened.

“You know who I am?””

He smiled.

“I know everything about this family.””

I stared at him.

“Then you know what happened.””

He looked at my leg.

Then back at my face.

“I heard there was an unfortunate incident.””

My father’s voice became sharp.

“An incident?””

Daniel shrugged.

“Family arguments become emotional.””

I couldn’t believe him.

“She attacked me.””

He looked at me calmly.

“And yet you are standing here.””

My father took a step forward.

“That’s enough.””

Daniel ignored him.

“You don’t understand what your grandmother started.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

“Your grandmother was stubborn.””

“My grandmother protected me.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“She protected her money.””

The words made my blood boil.

“You don’t know her.””

Daniel smiled.

“I knew her better than you did.””

My father’s expression changed.

“Be careful.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You should be thanking me.””

“For what?””

“For giving Emma a chance to understand the truth.””

I stared at him.

“You stole from me.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Then he leaned closer.

“Your husband stole from you.””

The words hit harder because they were true.

Daniel continued.

“Ryan was always weak.””

My hands clenched.

“Don’t talk about him like you’re innocent.””

Daniel smiled.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“You still defend him.””

I said nothing.

Because I hated that he noticed.

Daniel looked at Melissa.

“You gave her the documents.””

Melissa didn’t answer.

He nodded.

“I expected that eventually.””

My father frowned.

“What are you planning?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I’m not planning anything.””

“That’s a lie.””

He smiled.

“Then ask your husband.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Then placed it on the table.

“Ryan never told you the entire truth.””

I stared at the envelope.

“What is that?””

“Proof.””

My father picked it up.

Daniel stepped back.

“Open it.””

Nobody moved.

Then my father opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

One photograph.

And the moment I saw it, my entire body went cold.

It showed Ryan.

Standing in front of a courthouse.

Holding hands with Diane.

And next to them was a woman I had never seen before.

A woman who looked strangely familiar.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.

May you like

Three words.

*She is alive.*
