Chapter 7: The Family Secret Buried For Years

I couldn’t move.

The coffee shop around me continued like nothing had happened.

People laughed at nearby tables.

A barista called out someone’s order.

A child dropped a spoon and started crying.

Normal life continued.

But my world had just shifted again.

My uncle.

The person my grandmother trusted enough to include in her life.

The person whose name I barely heard anymore.

The person Melissa said had tried to take everything from her.

I looked at my father.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me?””

His face changed.

Not with anger.

With pain.

“Because your grandmother asked me not to.””

I stared at him.

“She knew?””

He nodded slowly.

“She knew someone would eventually try to access your inheritance.””

My hands tightened around the photograph.

“But why didn’t she tell me?””

My father looked down.

“Because she wanted you to have a normal life.””

I laughed quietly.

A bitter sound.

“Normal?””

I looked at the picture.

“Dad, someone stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from me. My husband helped them. His mother attacked me. And now you’re telling me my grandmother knew this could happen?””

He reached across the table.

“Emma.””

I pulled my hand back.

Not because I didn’t love him.

Because I was overwhelmed.

My entire life felt like it had been built on secrets.

Melissa looked at me.

“She wasn’t trying to hide the truth from you forever.””

“Then what was she doing?””

“Waiting.””

“For what?””

Melissa looked at my father.

“For you to be strong enough to handle it.””

I didn’t know whether that made me feel better.

Or worse.

My father picked up the photograph.

“We need to know who this man is.””

Melissa nodded.

“His name is Daniel Whitmore.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Whitmore?””

She nodded.

“He’s Diane’s older brother.””

Everything connected.

Diane didn’t randomly choose my inheritance.

She wasn’t just greedy.

This had been part of her family for years.

My father looked at Melissa.

“How much did Daniel know?””

“Everything.””

The answer came instantly.

“He helped Diane create the fake documents.””

I looked at her.

“How do you know?””

Melissa looked down.

“Because I saw them.””

She took a deep breath.

“Six months before Emma’s money started disappearing, Diane and Daniel met in her office. They had copies of Emma’s personal information.””

My stomach turned.

“My information?””

Melissa nodded.

“Your address. Your social security records. Your old signatures from paperwork you had completed.””

My father’s expression became dark.

“They collected everything.””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“How did they get those things?””

Melissa hesitated.

That hesitation bothered me.

“Melissa.””

She looked at me.

“I need to tell you something difficult.””

I waited.

“Ryan helped them.””

The words hurt.

Even though I already knew.

Somehow hearing it again made it real.

My father immediately looked at me.

“Emma.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at Melissa.

“Tell me exactly what he did.””

She took a breath.

“He gave Diane access to your personal documents.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“Before you got married.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Before we got married.

Before vows.

Before promises.

Before I believed he was my safe place.

My father leaned closer.

“Are you certain?””

Melissa nodded.

“I kept copies.””

She reached into her bag.

This time she placed several printed emails on the table.

The first one was from Ryan.

My hands shook as I read it.

Mom, I found the paperwork Emma used for her grandmother’s estate. She won’t notice anything missing.

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the voices.

Not the traffic.

Nothing.

Because the man I loved had been preparing to betray me before he even became my husband.

My father quietly said:

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“I’m okay.””

But I wasn’t.

I was grieving someone who was still alive.

The husband I thought I had.

The future I thought I was building.

Melissa looked ashamed.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“This isn’t your fault.””

She nodded.

“There’s more.””

I looked at her.

Of course there was more.

Every answer created another question.

“What else?””

She pointed at the final email.

“This one was sent two weeks before the attack.””

I read it.

Diane had written:

She is getting suspicious. We need to move faster.

My blood ran cold.

My father read over my shoulder.

“What does that mean?””

Melissa looked at me.

“It means the attack wasn’t random.””

I stared at the words.

They knew I was suspicious.

They knew I was asking questions.

And then Diane came to my kitchen.

With a cane.

My father’s voice became quiet.

“They were trying to intimidate you.””

Melissa shook her head.

“No.””

We both looked at her.

She swallowed.

“They were trying to make sure you couldn’t challenge them.””

The words sat between us.

Heavy.

Terrifying.

I looked at the photograph again.

“Where is Daniel now?””

Melissa hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

My father frowned.

“But you know something.””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

“What?””

Melissa lowered her voice.

“He came back into town yesterday.””

My heart started racing.

“Yesterday?””

She nodded.

“And he met with Diane.””

My father immediately stood.

“We need to leave.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He looked toward the window.

Because outside the coffee shop, a black SUV had just stopped near the entrance.

May you like

And Melissa had suddenly gone pale.

“That’s him.””
