Chapter 4: The Name Hidden In The Records
The next morning, I woke up in a hospital room.
For a few seconds, I forgot where I was.
The white ceiling.
The quiet machines.
The smell of antiseptic.
Then everything came rushing back.
The kitchen.
The cane.
Ryan.
The folder.
The truth.
I turned my head slowly.
My father was sitting beside the bed.
He looked exhausted.
“You stayed all night?””
He gave me a small smile.
“Of course I did.””
My eyes burned.
I looked away.
“I feel stupid.””
My father’s expression softened.
“No.””
“I trusted them.””
“That doesn’t make you stupid.””
I swallowed.
“It makes me feel like I don’t know how to judge people.””
My father took my hand.
“Sometimes the people closest to us are the hardest to see clearly.””
A nurse entered a few minutes later to check my condition.
After she left, my father placed the folder on my lap.
“I need to show you the rest.””
I looked at the folder.
Part of me wanted to throw it away.
Because every page represented another piece of my life that had been a lie.
But I opened it.
The first document showed a second bank account.
My name.
My information.
My identity.
But not my actions.
“When was this opened?””
“Eight months ago.””
I frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
My father pointed to the signature.
“Look carefully.””
I stared.
The signature looked close to mine.
Close enough to fool someone who wasn’t paying attention.
But I noticed something.
The last letter.
My grandmother always told me I wrote my final letter too sharply.
This signature was smoother.
Different.
“This isn’t mine.””
My father nodded.
“I knew you would see it.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
“Because I’m your father.””
For the first time in days, I almost smiled.
Almost.
Then I saw the next page.
My smile disappeared.
It was a record of withdrawals.
Small amounts at first.
Then larger.
The money wasn’t transferred directly from my inheritance account.
It moved through this fake account first.
Someone had created a trail to make it look legitimate.
“They planned this,” I whispered.
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
“This wasn’t one bad decision.””
“No.””
His voice was serious.
“This took preparation.””
I closed the folder.
“Ryan knew.””
My father didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
I knew.
A few hours later, Ryan came to the hospital.
I almost didn’t recognize him.
The confidence was gone.
The perfect husband image was gone.
He looked like someone who had finally realized he could lose everything.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
“What do you want?””
He glanced at my father.
“I want to explain.””
My father stood.
“You had plenty of opportunities.””
Ryan ignored him.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
“Protect me?””
My voice shook.
“You watched your mother hurt me.””
His eyes dropped.
“I know.””
“No.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t know.””
The room became quiet.
Ryan moved closer.
“Emma, I made a terrible choice.””
“What choice?””
He looked away.
And I saw something.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“Ryan.””
He finally looked at me.
“What are you afraid of?””
He didn’t answer.
My father stepped forward.
“Tell her everything.””
Ryan shook his head.
“Dad…”
“Everything.””
Ryan sat down.
His hands were trembling.
“My mother convinced me that the inheritance should belong to the family.””
I stared at him.
“The family?””
“She said once we were married, your money was basically ours.””
I felt a cold anger rising inside me.
“She convinced you?””
Ryan looked ashamed.
“At first.””
I noticed that word.
“At first?””
He went silent.
My father crossed his arms.
“Keep going.””
Ryan took a deep breath.
“Then Mom found out the account had restrictions. She couldn’t access it without your approval.””
My heart sank.
“So she created another way.””
Ryan nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“And you helped.””
He whispered:
“Yes.””
The room felt completely empty.
Even though three people were standing there.
My husband had just admitted he helped his mother steal from me.
But then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“There’s something you don’t know.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Ryan looked terrified.
“Mom didn’t do this because she needed the money.””
My father narrowed his eyes.
“Then why?””
Ryan looked at the folder.
Then at me.
“Because she was trying to hide what happened to the money before yours.””
I felt a chill move through my body.
“What money?””
Ryan’s lips parted.
But before he could answer, the hospital room door opened.
A woman in a dark suit stepped inside.
She held another folder.
“Emma Parker?””
I looked at her.
“Yes?””
She walked closer.
“I’m with the financial crimes division.””
My heart started racing.
She placed the folder on the table.
“We found something connected to your inheritance.””
She looked at Ryan.
“And your husband’s family.””
May you like
Ryan turned pale.
Because whatever was inside that folder was something even he didn’t know.
