Chapter 2: The Folder My Father Brought

My father had always been a quiet man.

He didn’t yell.

He didn’t threaten.

He didn’t need to.

Growing up, I learned that the strongest people rarely needed to prove their strength.

But when he walked into my kitchen that evening, I saw something I had never seen before.

Disappointment.

Not anger.

Not rage.

Just disappointment.

His eyes moved from me on the floor to the cane beside my leg.

Then they moved to Ryan.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The silence was heavier than any argument we had ever had.

“Emma,” Dad said softly.

I tried to answer, but my throat tightened.

He immediately dropped to his knees beside me.

“Where does it hurt?””

I shook my head.

“I’m okay.””

He looked at me.

My father knew me too well.

He knew when I was lying.

“No, you’re not.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Mr. Parker, you’re misunderstanding what happened.””

Dad slowly looked up.

“Am I?””

Ryan swallowed.

“My mother and Emma had an argument.””

Dad glanced at the cane.

“Arguments usually don’t leave bruises.””

Diane crossed her arms.

“She was disrespectful.””

My father’s expression changed.

“You struck my daughter because she refused to give you access to her money?””

Diane looked offended.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then explain the cane.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Ryan quickly stepped between them.

“Dad, this is a family issue.””

My father stood.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“That stopped being a family issue when my daughter was lying on the floor asking her husband for help.””

Ryan’s face tightened.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

My father looked at him.

“Then tell me.””

Ryan hesitated.

That hesitation told me more than any confession could have.

My father helped me sit up while calling for medical assistance.

Diane kept trying to control the conversation.

“She’s exaggerating.””

I looked at her.

After everything she had done, she was still trying to make me look unreasonable.

“I’m exaggerating?””

My voice cracked.

“You hit me because I wouldn’t give you my inheritance.””

Ryan sighed.

“Emma, stop making this worse.””

I turned toward him.

“Worse for who?””

He looked away.

That hurt more than I expected.

My father noticed.

He reached into his coat pocket.

“I didn’t come here just because Emma called me.””

Everyone became still.

Ryan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Dad placed a thick folder on the kitchen counter.

“I’ve been reviewing the inheritance records.””

My stomach dropped.

“What records?””

He looked at me.

“The account your grandmother left you.””

I stared at him.

“That money hasn’t been touched.””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because my father was always honest with me.

Even when the truth hurt.

“Emma,” he said carefully, “that’s what I thought too.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

Ryan’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I noticed.

“What are you saying?”” I asked.

Dad opened the folder.

Inside were printed documents, bank statements, and transfer records.

“I checked the account after I received a notification about unusual activity.””

I looked at Ryan.

Then Diane.

Neither of them looked surprised.

That was when my fear became something else.

Suspicion.

Dad placed a page on the counter.

“Over the last year, more than four hundred thousand dollars was transferred from the inheritance account.””

My breath stopped.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

He pointed at the records.

“Until I traced where the money went.””

Diane suddenly stepped forward.

“You have no right to investigate our family.””

My father ignored her.

His eyes stayed on me.

“Every transfer went to the same destination.””

My hands started shaking.

“Where?””

Dad looked directly at Ryan.

Then he said:

“An account controlled by your mother.””

The kitchen went silent.

Ryan’s face turned pale.

“That’s not possible.””

My father reached into the folder and pulled out another document.

“It gets worse.””

I felt my heartbeat racing.

“What worse?””

Dad placed the paper in front of me.

At the bottom was a signature.

My signature.

Except I knew immediately.

I had never signed it.

My father’s voice dropped.

“Someone used your name to authorize the transfers.””

I looked at Ryan.

He couldn’t meet my eyes.

“Ryan…”

He took a step back.

“Emma, listen to me.””

But my father interrupted.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

Dad picked up the folder.

“First, she needs to hear the truth.””

Ryan’s face lost all color.

Because he knew.

Whatever he was about to say could not be hidden anymore.

My father looked straight at him.

“Tell her what happened.””

Ryan opened his mouth.

May you like

And after several seconds of silence, he whispered:

“I didn’t think you would ever find out.””
