Chapter 8: The Truth Nobody Wanted Her To Know

I didn’t hear anything after Daniel said those words.

Not immediately.

The sentence repeated in my mind.

Your biological father is Marcus Carter.

Marcus.

My husband.

The man who raised Jayla.

The man who held her hand at school meetings.

The man who taught her how to ride a bike.

The man who told me he loved us.

My brain tried to reject it.

But Jayla’s reaction told me she heard it too.

She stared at Marcus.

“No.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Marcus looked completely broken.

“Jayla…”

“No.””

She stepped back.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel looked down.

“I wish I was.””

Jayla’s face changed.

She wasn’t angry.

She was hurt.

The kind of hurt that comes when someone’s entire understanding of their life collapses.

“Mom…”

She looked at me.

“Did you know?””

I felt tears in my eyes.

“No.””

She searched my face.

“You swear?””

“I swear.””

She looked back at Marcus.

“Did you know?””

Marcus couldn’t answer.

That was enough.

Jayla covered her mouth.

“You knew.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I found out later.””

“How much later?””

His voice shook.

“After I met you.””

She laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“So everyone knew something except me.””

“Jayla—”

“No.””

She wiped her tears.

“Don’t.””

The room became unbearable.

Daniel stepped inside.

“I’m sorry.””

Jayla looked at him.

“You knew too.””

He lowered his head.

“Yes.””

“Then why did nobody tell me?””

No one answered.

Because there was no answer that could fix it.

I looked at Marcus.

“You are her father?””

He nodded slowly.

“But you told me you weren’t.””

“I didn’t know at first.””

“Then when did you know?””

Marcus looked at Jayla.

“When she was nine.””

Jayla froze.

“Nine?””

The same age she was when Marcus entered her life.

I remembered.

The community center.

The first meeting.

The day Marcus said he barely remembered.

He had lied.

He hadn’t barely remembered.

He remembered everything.

“I was trying to protect her,” Marcus said.

Jayla shook her head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

His face fell.

And I knew she was right to feel that way.

Because even if Marcus had good intentions, he had taken away her choice.

Her truth.

Her identity.

Daniel sat down.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“Of course there is.””

He accepted the anger in my voice.

“Marcus didn’t know the whole story.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small folder.

“No.””

Marcus immediately reacted.

“What is that?””

“The original records.””

My heart started pounding.

Daniel placed them on the table.

“I found them after Tyler started investigating.””

Jayla looked at the folder.

“Why did Tyler care?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Because Tyler discovered someone had changed the records.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

“The person who changed Jayla’s identity wasn’t trying to hide Marcus.””

I frowned.

“Then who were they hiding?””

Daniel slowly opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old hospital forms.

Names.

Dates.

Signatures.

But I couldn’t focus on them.

Because Daniel pointed to one line.

“This is the reason nobody wanted Jayla to know.””

I looked closer.

The name written there made my breath stop.

Not Marcus.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been part of Jayla’s life from the beginning.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who did this?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward the staircase.

Toward Jayla.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your grandmother.””
