Chapter 6: The Truth Written By Tyler

I didn’t open the envelope at the restaurant.

I couldn’t.

Not with Daniel watching.

Not with Marcus sitting across from me.

Not while my entire life felt like it was balancing on a single piece of paper.

I brought it home.

And I waited until Jayla was asleep.

At least I hoped she was asleep.

Marcus stood in the kitchen while I placed the envelope on the table.

“You knew.””

He closed his eyes.

“Emily…”

“You knew something about Jayla.””

He didn’t deny it.

That hurt more than any excuse.

“Tell me.””

Marcus sat down slowly.

“I need you to understand why.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“I need you to understand that I trusted you.””

He looked at me.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

Silence.

Finally, he whispered:

“When I met Jayla years ago, I didn’t know who she was.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Daniel didn’t tell me he had a daughter.””

I stared at him.

“Then how did you meet her?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“At the community center.””

I remembered.

The same story.

The same day.

But now there was more.

“She was alone.””

My expression softened slightly.

“She was only a little girl.””

Marcus nodded.

“She was waiting for someone who never showed up.””

Daniel.

I felt my chest tighten.

“I helped her call her grandmother.””

“And?””

“And later, I found out who she was.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Because Daniel begged me not to.””

I laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“So you chose his secret over me?””

“No.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I chose Jayla.””

That answer stopped me.

“What?””

“She was already abandoned once.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“I didn’t want her to feel like everyone in her life disappeared.””

I looked away.

Part of me understood.

Another part of me was furious.

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

The honesty hurt.

“I was wrong.””

I picked up the envelope.

“Then let’s see what Tyler wanted us to know.””

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The paper was folded carefully.

The first line immediately caught my attention.

“Mom.””

I froze.

My hands started shaking.

“Mom?””

Marcus looked confused.

I kept reading.

“If you are reading this, it means I wasn’t able to explain everything myself.””

My breathing stopped.

The letter wasn’t addressed to Daniel.

It wasn’t addressed to Marcus.

It was addressed to someone else.

Someone Tyler called Mom.

I kept reading.

“I found out the truth about my family, but I also found out something about Jayla.””

My eyes moved faster.

“He didn’t tell me everything.””

Marcus stood.

“Who?””

I ignored him.

The next sentence made my heart race.

“Marcus was protecting her because he knew what Daniel did.””

I looked up.

“What did Daniel do?””

Marcus’s face went pale.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

I looked back at the letter.

The next words were underlined.

“The person who caused all of this is not the person everyone thinks.””

I stopped.

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because suddenly, I understood.

This wasn’t only about Jayla’s pregnancy.

This wasn’t only about Marcus hiding the past.

Someone had been controlling the story for years.

I continued reading.

“Jayla deserves to know the truth before she becomes a mother.””

My fingers trembled.

Then I reached the final lines.

The ink looked darker there.

Like Tyler had written them with urgency.

“Emily, if you’re reading this, ask Marcus one question.””

I looked at my husband.

He was staring at the letter.

“What question?””

I looked down.

The final sentence waited.

May you like

And when I read it, my entire body went cold.

“Ask him why Jayla’s birth certificate has a different name on it.””
