Chapter 2: The Secret She Carried

The drive home was the quietest drive of my life.

No music.

No conversation.

Not even the sound of Marcus clearing his throat like he usually did when he wanted to avoid an uncomfortable topic.

Jayla sat in the back seat, staring out the window.

I kept looking at her reflection in the rearview mirror.

Every few seconds, I wanted to ask another question.

Who was the father?

How long had she known?

Why had she been afraid of me?

But every time I opened my mouth, I saw the same terrified expression on her face.

She wasn’t acting like someone hiding a mistake.

She looked like someone hiding something painful.

When we arrived home, Jayla immediately went upstairs.

I watched her disappear down the hallway.

The same hallway where I had watched her take her first steps.

The same hallway where she had decorated her bedroom walls with drawings and pictures.

Now she was walking away from me carrying a secret I couldn’t understand.

Marcus walked into the kitchen.

I followed.

“Start talking.””

He stopped.

“Please, Emily—”

“No.””

I placed my purse on the counter.

“I have spent the entire day feeling like a stranger in my own family. So you’re going to tell me everything.””

Marcus looked exhausted.

“I didn’t know how to handle it.””

“You knew?””

He looked down.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

“How long?””

“A few days.””

“A few days?””

My voice rose.

“Marcus, our daughter has been dealing with this alone, and you knew for days?””

“I found out because she came to me.””

I froze.

“She came to you?””

He nodded.

“She was terrified.””

I closed my eyes.

The pain of that sentence was almost worse than anger.

“My daughter went to you instead of me.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Because she thought you would be disappointed.””

I looked at him.

“And why would she think that?””

He didn’t answer.

I knew my relationship with Jayla wasn’t perfect.

After her father left when she was nine, I had spent years trying to be both parents.

I worked extra shifts.

I attended school meetings.

I stayed awake during nightmares.

Maybe somewhere along the way, I became so focused on protecting her future that I forgot she needed me to protect her heart too.

But that didn’t explain everything.

“What did you mean when you said ‘him’ on the phone?””

Marcus became quiet.

Too quiet.

“Marcus.””

He looked toward the stairs.

Then lowered his voice.

“There’s something else.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Jayla didn’t tell me everything at first.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

“She only told me she was pregnant.””

“Then what else is there?””

Marcus ran a hand through his hair.

“When she finally told me more, she asked me not to tell you.””

I felt my eyes burn.

“She asked you to keep another secret?””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“She asked because she was afraid.””

I walked toward the stairs.

“I’m talking to my daughter.””

“Emily, wait.””

I stopped.

“Why?””

Marcus looked like he was fighting with himself.

“Because you need to understand what you’re walking into.””

I turned around.

“What does that mean?””

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Finally, he whispered:

“The father isn’t who you think.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who is it?””

Marcus looked away.

“I don’t think I’m the person who should tell you.””

The anger inside me disappeared, replaced by fear.

Because there was only one reason someone would hesitate like that.

The truth was worse than I imagined.

I walked upstairs slowly.

Every step felt heavier.

When I reached Jayla’s bedroom door, I knocked.

No answer.

“Jayla?””

Silence.

I opened the door slightly.

She was sitting on her bed holding an old photograph.

When she saw me, she quickly wiped her tears.

“Mom…”

I sat beside her.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

“Who is the father?””

Jayla’s face changed instantly.

Her fingers tightened around the photograph.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””

“Find out what?””

She looked at me.

And the fear in her eyes made my heart stop.

“Mom…”

Her voice cracked.

“The person who got me pregnant…”

She looked down at the picture in her hands.

“…is someone you already know.””

I felt frozen.

“Who?””

Jayla slowly turned the photograph around.

And the moment I saw the face in the picture, I couldn’t breathe.

May you like

Because it was the last person I ever expected.

Marcus.
