Chapter 4: The Truth Behind The Silence
Marcus ended the call immediately.
Too quickly.
That was the first thing I noticed.
The second thing I noticed was that he looked at me like he was waiting for something terrible to happen.
I stared at him.
“Why did Daniel ask if I knew?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
“Answer me.””
He sat there silently.
And that silence became its own confession.
I walked toward the kitchen counter and grabbed a glass of water, but my hands were shaking so badly that I had to put it down.
My entire life felt like it was shifting.
The man I trusted.
The daughter I protected.
The past I thought I understood.
Everything had cracks.
“Marcus.””
He finally looked up.
“I’m sorry.””
I closed my eyes.
“I don’t want an apology.””
My voice became quieter.
“I want the truth.””
He nodded slowly.
“You deserve that.””
“Then tell me.””
He took a deep breath.
“Before I met you, I worked with Daniel.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with Jayla?””
“We were friends.””
The answer surprised me.
“Friends?””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked away.
“Daniel and I knew each other for years.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“You never told me that.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel was not someone I wanted in your life.””
I stared at him.
“That’s not an answer.””
Marcus rubbed his hands together.
“Daniel made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
I almost laughed.
“He abandoned his daughter.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why is he calling you?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation scared me.
Finally, he said:
“Because he knows something.””
“What?””
His eyes met mine.
“Something about Jayla’s birth.””
I felt numb.
“What are you talking about?””
Marcus stood.
“Emily, I need you to sit down.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Every time someone tells me to sit down today, my life gets worse.””
For a moment, Marcus looked like he wanted to cry.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You keep saying that.””
I stepped closer.
“But you keep making decisions without me.””
He looked down.
“You’re right.””
That was the first time he admitted it.
And somehow, it hurt more.
Upstairs, I heard a door open.
Jayla appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Mom?””
I immediately turned toward her.
“Go back to your room.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was small.
“But I need to tell you.””
Marcus looked alarmed.
“Jayla.””
She looked at him.
“I can’t keep lying anymore.””
Those words changed the room.
She slowly walked downstairs.
I watched my daughter come closer.
She looked younger than sixteen.
Like a child who had been forced to carry an adult problem.
“Mom…”
She stopped in front of me.
“The reason I was scared wasn’t just because I was pregnant.””
I held my breath.
“Then what was it?””
She looked at Marcus.
Then back at me.
“Because I knew the baby’s father.””
My heart pounded.
I already knew.
But I needed her to say it.
“Who?””
Jayla closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“Tyler.””
I frowned.
“Who is Tyler?””
She looked at Marcus.
And Marcus’s expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“No.””
His voice was barely audible.
I turned toward him.
“You know him?””
Marcus looked like he had been punched by the memory.
“Tyler was Daniel’s son.””
The room went silent.
I stared at Jayla.
“Daniel has another child?””
She nodded.
“My half-brother.””
The words didn’t make sense.
“Jayla…”
She started crying.
“I didn’t know at first.””
“What do you mean?””
She sat down.
“I met Tyler at school.””
My heart sank.
“School?””
She nodded.
“He didn’t tell me who he was.””
Marcus whispered:
“Oh my God.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He looked terrified.
“Daniel came back because of Tyler.””
I felt a chill.
“Why?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Jayla did.
“Because Tyler disappeared.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She nodded.
“And before he disappeared…”
Her voice cracked.
“He told someone he was going to reveal the truth about our family.””
Nobody spoke.
The clock on the wall was the only sound.
Then Marcus’s phone buzzed again.
He looked at it.
A message.
His face turned pale.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He didn’t move.
“Marcus.””
Slowly, he lifted his eyes.
“Daniel wants to meet tonight.””
“Why?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Because he says he has proof.””
“Proof of what?””
He looked at Jayla.
Then at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Proof that the story we have believed for years was a lie.””
