Chapter 1: The Test Result

I thought the hardest thing I would ever hear in that small examination room was a diagnosis about my own health.

I was wrong.

The words that shattered my world were not about me at all.

“Jayla, your pregnancy test came back positive.””

The doctor said it calmly, almost gently, but the sentence landed like something breaking through glass.

For a few seconds, I didn’t understand what I was hearing.

My fingers tightened around the edge of the chair. The buzzing sound from the ceiling lights suddenly became louder. The smell of disinfectant, the cold air conditioning, the stack of magazines on the table beside me—all of it faded away.

I slowly turned my head toward my daughter.

Jayla was sitting across from me in a pale blue hoodie, her hands folded tightly in her lap.

She was sixteen years old.

My little girl who still asked me to check under her bed when she was scared.

My little girl who used to fall asleep on my shoulder during movie nights.

My little girl who had always told me she would never keep secrets from me.

But she wasn’t looking at me.

She was staring at the floor.

And then her eyes filled with tears.

“Mom…” she whispered.

That one word broke something inside me.

I looked at the doctor, then back at Jayla.

“Wait,” I said, my voice shaking.

“What did you say?””

The doctor lowered her clipboard slightly.

“Your daughter is pregnant.””

I felt like the room had tilted.

“No,” I whispered.

Not because I didn’t believe the doctor.

Because I couldn’t believe Jayla had been carrying something this huge without me knowing.

I turned toward my daughter.

“Jayla?””

She finally looked up.

Her face was already covered in tears.

“I was scared to tell you,” she sobbed.

The air left my lungs.

“Scared to tell me what?”” I asked.

She wiped her cheeks with trembling fingers.

“That I knew.””

I froze.

“What?””

Her shoulders shook.

“I knew before today.””

The silence that followed felt unbearable.

The doctor gently placed the clipboard on the table.

“Jayla mentioned she had symptoms a few weeks ago, but she was afraid to take a test.””

I stared at my daughter.

A few weeks.

She had been scared.

She had been alone.

And I had no idea.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”” I asked.

My voice wasn’t angry.

That somehow made it hurt more.

Jayla looked away.

“Because I thought you’d hate me.””

The words cut deeper than anything else.

“Hate you?”” I repeated.

She nodded slowly.

“I thought you would look at me differently.””

I moved closer to her.

“Jayla, there is nothing you could ever do that would make me stop being your mother.””

She covered her mouth as she cried harder.

But before I could reach for her hand, the examination room door suddenly opened.

A man rushed inside.

My husband, Marcus.

His face was pale.

His eyes moved from the doctor to Jayla, then immediately to me.

“Where is she?”” he asked.

I stood up.

“What are you doing here?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

The doctor noticed it too.

“Mr. Carter, we were not expecting you today.””

Marcus swallowed.

“I got a call.””

“From who?”” I asked.

His eyes shifted away from mine.

That tiny movement told me more than words ever could.

I felt my stomach twist.

“Marcus.””

He stayed silent.

I took a step closer.

“Why do you look like you already knew?””

Jayla suddenly started crying harder.

“Mom…”

I looked at her.

Then at him.

The two people I loved most in the world were sitting in front of me, and somehow I was the only person who didn’t know what was happening.

“Jayla,” I said quietly, “look at me.””

She slowly lifted her eyes.

I could barely get the words out.

“You already knew, didn’t you?””

Her lips trembled.

Before she could answer, Marcus spoke.

“Wait.””

His voice was low.

Almost pleading.

“Don’t ask her that.””

I turned toward him.

“What did you just say?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I think we should talk about this at home.””

“No.””

The word came out before I even realized I had said it.

“No, we’re not leaving this room until I understand.””

Jayla looked terrified.

The doctor stood nearby, unsure whether to interrupt.

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“This is complicated.””

I laughed once.

A cold, empty laugh.

“My teenage daughter is pregnant, my husband walked in here looking like he already knew, and you’re telling me it’s complicated?””

He looked at Jayla.

Then back at me.

“I was trying to protect her.””

My heart stopped.

Protect her?

From what?

“Protect her from who?”” I asked.

Marcus didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because suddenly, I wasn’t just facing the shock of my daughter’s pregnancy.

I was facing the possibility that someone had been hiding the truth from me.

The doctor gently cleared her throat.

“Before we continue, I think Jayla needs support from both of you.””

I looked at my daughter.

She was crying silently now.

A child carrying a secret she never should have carried alone.

I reached for her hand.

But before I touched her fingers, Marcus’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His entire expression changed.

The color drained from his face.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He just stared at the name flashing on the screen.

Then he whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“It’s him.””

I looked at Jayla.

Then at Marcus.

“Who is him?””

Marcus slowly lifted his eyes toward me.

May you like

And before he answered, the doctor closed the door behind us.

“We need to talk about what happened before today.””
