Chapter 5: The Man Who Returned From The Past

I spent the next two hours staring at the same spot on the living room wall.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t think.

Every answer Marcus gave me created three more questions.

The life I thought I knew suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.

Daniel.

Tyler.

Jayla.

Marcus.

All of their names were connected by a past I had never been allowed to see.

And somehow, I was standing in the middle of it.

“I’m going with you.””

Marcus looked up from his phone.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

That made me angry.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””

“Emily—”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“For years, you decided what I should know. You decided what Jayla should know. You decided what secrets were too painful for me to handle.””

My voice cracked.

“I’m done being protected from the truth.””

Marcus looked away.

I could see the guilt on his face.

And for the first time since I met him, I wondered how much of our marriage had been built on things he never told me.

Jayla was sitting on the couch quietly.

She looked exhausted.

I walked over and sat beside her.

“Are you okay?””

She gave a small, broken laugh.

“Is that even a question anymore?””

My heart hurt.

I took her hand.

“I’m sorry.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“For what?””

“For not seeing how scared you were.””

She shook her head.

“Mom, I should have told you.””

“You were a child carrying something terrifying.””

She looked down.

“I thought you would look at me like I was a disappointment.””

I squeezed her hand.

“Never.””

A few seconds passed.

Then she whispered:

“Tyler wasn’t supposed to happen.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

She took a deep breath.

“He was the only person who made me feel like someone understood me.””

My chest tightened.

Not because I was angry.

Because I realized my daughter had been searching for comfort somewhere else.

“He knew about my dad leaving.””

She looked toward the window.

“He knew what it felt like to have someone disappear.””

I stayed silent.

“Then one day, he told me something strange.””

“What?””

She hesitated.

“He said his father had a secret.””

I looked at Marcus.

His face was tense.

“What secret?””

Jayla shook her head.

“I don’t know. He never finished telling me.””

“Why?””

“Because after that night, he disappeared.””

The room became silent.

Then Marcus spoke.

“We need to meet Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“Where?””

“An old restaurant downtown.””

“Why there?””

“Because Daniel won’t meet anywhere else.””

I stood.

“Then let’s go.””

Marcus grabbed his jacket.

Before leaving, I looked at Jayla.

“You stay with my sister tonight.””

Her expression changed.

“No.””

“Jayla—”

“I don’t want to be alone.””

That stopped me.

I walked over and hugged her.

For the first time in days, she held onto me like she was little again.

“I’m not going anywhere.””

She whispered against my shoulder.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

The restaurant was almost empty when we arrived.

It was one of those old places with dark wooden tables and faded pictures on the walls.

Marcus walked in first.

I followed.

A man was sitting in the corner.

Older than I remembered.

Tired.

Broken.

But I knew him instantly.

Daniel.

Jayla’s father.

He looked up.

His eyes immediately went to me.

“Emily.””

Hearing him say my name felt strange.

Like hearing a stranger speak about something personal.

“You know who I am.””

He nodded.

“I’ve always known.””

I sat down across from him.

“Then explain.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“You told her?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Daniel sighed.

“I knew this day would come.””

I leaned forward.

“My daughter is pregnant.””

His face changed.

Not with surprise.

With sadness.

“I know.””

My hands tightened.

“You know?””

Daniel nodded.

“Tyler told me.””

I froze.

“Tyler is alive?””

Daniel looked down.

“No.””

The word hung between us.

“What happened?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He was trying to find the truth.””

“What truth?””

Daniel reached into his jacket.

Marcus immediately became tense.

“Wait.””

Daniel pulled out a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

“I kept this because I didn’t know what to do with it.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

“Something Tyler left behind.””

Marcus looked nervous.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You’ve hidden enough.””

My eyes moved between them.

“What is inside?””

Daniel pushed the envelope toward me.

“Everything that explains why Marcus knew Jayla before he told you.””

My heart stopped.

I slowly reached for it.

But before my fingers touched the envelope, Daniel said something that made me freeze.

“Emily…”

I looked up.

“Your husband didn’t just know Jayla.””

The restaurant suddenly felt silent.

“He knew who she really was.””

I stared at Marcus.

He looked away.

And that was the moment I realized.

May you like

There was another secret.

A bigger one.
