Chapter 9: The Betrayal Hidden in Our Home
The photograph shook in my hand.
I didn’t need Thomas to explain.
I knew that face.
I had seen it thousands of times.
At our dinner table.
At family celebrations.
Standing beside my husband during the happiest moments of our lives.
Daniel noticed my expression.
“Mom?””
I couldn’t answer.
The person in the photograph was not a stranger.
It was someone who had held my son as a baby.
Someone who had called my husband a brother.
Someone who had comforted me after the funeral.
Someone I trusted.
Thomas watched me carefully.
“You recognize him.””
I nodded slowly.
“Mark Reynolds.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who is that?””
I looked at my son.
“Your father’s closest friend.””
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“Uncle Mark?””
The name sounded strange coming from his mouth.
Because like me, he had never imagined that name could belong in a story like this.
Thomas sighed.
“Mark was the person who had access to everything.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What do you mean?””
“He knew about the investigation.””
“He knew about Richard?””
“Yes.””
“He knew about the documents?””
“Yes.””
I looked down.
And suddenly, memories I had buried began returning.
The night your father died, Mark had arrived before the police.
He had hugged me.
He had told me everything would be okay.
He had taken control of every detail.
At the time, I thought he was helping.
Now…
I wasn’t sure.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”” Daniel asked.
I looked at Thomas.
Because I had spent years believing the wrong person was my enemy.
“Because I didn’t know.””
Daniel’s expression softened slightly.
“You didn’t know?””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“I thought Richard was the only person trying to destroy your father.””
Thomas nodded.
“That’s what Mark wanted everyone to believe.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Richard was loud.””
Thomas looked toward the mansion.
“People expect betrayal from enemies.””
He paused.
“But they rarely look at the person standing beside them.””
The garden became quiet again.
Amelia stood near the gate, listening.
For once, she wasn’t the center of attention.
She looked small.
Lost.
Daniel turned toward her.
“You knew about Mark?””
Amelia hesitated.
“A little.””
His face tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“Richard told me his name.””
“Why?””
“Because he said Mark was the reason my grandfather never got caught.””
Thomas immediately looked at her.
“You knew?””
“I knew there was someone helping him.””
Daniel stepped back.
“And you still came into my life?””
Amelia cried.
“I was trying to find proof.””
Nobody spoke.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””
Daniel looked away.
“But I swear, when I met you, I stopped caring about the company.””
I watched her.
Maybe she was telling the truth.
Maybe she wasn’t.
But there was one thing I knew.
Truth had a way of exposing everyone eventually.
Thomas opened another document.
“This is the reason Mark disappeared after your father’s death.””
Daniel looked.
“What is it?””
“Bank records.””
Thomas handed them over.
Daniel scanned the pages.
Then his eyes widened.
“These transfers…”
“Came from Richard’s accounts.””
Daniel looked at me.
“And went to Mark.””
I nodded.
The final piece.
The missing piece.
For years, I had wondered how Richard stayed ahead of us.
How he knew what we were doing.
How every move we made seemed to fail.
Now I knew.
Someone inside the house had been telling him.
Daniel looked devastated.
“My father trusted him.””
“Yes.””
“And you trusted him.””
I looked down.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mom…”
I shook my head.
“I should have seen it.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You trusted someone because you had a good heart.””
I looked at him.
“But that nearly destroyed us.””
Before Daniel could answer, a sound came from the driveway.
A car door closing.
Everyone turned.
A man walked toward the garden.
Older.
Confident.
Smiling.
The smile disappeared when he saw Thomas.
“Thomas.””
The entire garden froze.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
“Mark.””
Mark Reynolds looked around.
At the guests.
At the documents.
At Amelia.
Then finally at me.
“Lena.””
I stared at the man who had held my son after his father’s funeral.
The man who had told me we would survive.
The man who had spent years pretending to protect us.
“You came.””
He smiled faintly.
“I heard there was a problem.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You mean you heard the truth was coming out?””
Mark’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“No.””
He held up the documents.
“I understand exactly.””
Mark looked at Thomas.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
Thomas answered calmly.
“And you should have gone to prison twenty years ago.””
Mark’s face hardened.
Then he looked at me.
“You really want your son to know everything?””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Mark smiled.
A cruel, familiar smile.
“Ask her.””
He pointed at me.
“Ask Lena why your father was driving that night.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
Mark continued.
“Ask your mother why she begged him not to go.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel looked at me.
And in that moment…
I knew the final secret had arrived.
May you like
The one I had carried alone.
The one I never wanted my son to hear.
