Chapter 6: The Truth She Hid
Daniel didn’t move.
Neither did I.
The words hung in the air.
“The last person to see him alive.””
Amelia had said them like she had been waiting years for the opportunity.
Like she believed those words would destroy me.
Daniel slowly turned.
“Mom?””
I looked at my son.
There was pain in his eyes.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Just confusion.
And that hurt more.
“I was with your father that night.””
The guests whispered.
Daniel stared.
“You never told me that.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Because the truth was complicated.
Because sometimes protecting someone meant carrying a burden alone.
But Daniel was no longer a child.
He deserved to know.
“I was with him because he called me.””
“About what?””
“About Richard.””
Daniel looked down.
“Of course.””
His voice became quiet.
“Everything comes back to him.””
I nodded.
“Your father had discovered more evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“That Richard had been planning to take control of Carter Holdings completely.””
Amelia laughed softly.
Everyone turned.
She shook her head.
“This is unbelievable.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why are you laughing?””
“Because you still don’t understand.””
She pointed at me.
“She’s telling you half the story.””
My face remained calm.
“Then tell him the other half.””
Amelia hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Daniel saw it.
“You don’t know?””
Her jaw tightened.
“I know your mother was there.””
“Yes.””
“And after your father died, she became the person controlling everything.””
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s true.””
“Yes.””
“I took over the company when I was old enough.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
I looked at him.
“Because your father trusted me.””
Amelia stepped forward.
“Or because he wasn’t alive to stop you.””
The words were cruel.
Daniel’s face darkened.
“Enough.””
But Amelia wasn’t looking at him anymore.
She was looking at me.
“You always thought you won.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“You kept the company. You kept the reputation. You kept Daniel.””
My eyes narrowed.
“I never took Daniel from anyone.””
“No?””
Her voice became bitter.
“You made sure he hated my family.””
“That is not true.””
“Then why did you never tell him about the agreement?””
Daniel looked between us.
“What agreement?””
I went silent.
Amelia smiled.
“There it is.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom?””
I knew this moment would come.
I just never expected it to come like this.
“Your father made an agreement with Richard before he died.””
“What kind of agreement?””
“A settlement.””
Daniel frowned.
“Settlement?””
I nodded.
“Your father wanted to prevent a public legal battle.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard was your grandfather’s friend for decades.””
Daniel looked confused.
“So Dad forgave him?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“He gave him one chance to return what he stole.””
Amelia crossed her arms.
“And what happened?””
I looked at her.
“He refused.””
Daniel looked at the folder.
“Then why is my mother’s signature on that transfer document?””
Amelia became quiet.
That was the question she did not want asked.
I answered.
“Because Richard used his granddaughter.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“What?””
“Amelia was placed on certain documents because Richard believed nobody would suspect someone young.””
Amelia’s face changed.
“That’s a lie.””
“Is it?””
I looked at her.
“Then explain why your signature appears on company transfers you claim you know nothing about.””
She said nothing.
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
The perfect engagement party had become an investigation into a past he never knew existed.
Then a voice came from behind us.
“Because Amelia didn’t just know.””
Everyone turned.
An older man stood near the entrance of the mansion.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“Mr. Carter?””
It was Thomas Carter.
His father’s former lawyer.
The man who had disappeared from public life after Daniel’s father died.
He walked slowly across the lawn.
Holding a sealed envelope.
“I’m sorry, Lena.””
I looked at him.
“You came.””
He nodded.
“I was supposed to wait until Daniel was ready.””
Daniel stared.
“Ready for what?””
Thomas looked at Amelia.
Then at the envelope.
“Ready to learn who actually caused your father’s death.””
The air disappeared from the garden.
Amelia stepped backward.
“No.””
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“Your father’s accident was not an accident.””
Daniel froze.
My heart sank.
Because after all these years…
May you like
The truth I had protected him from was finally arriving.
And it was much darker than he knew.
