Chapter 5: The Night Everything Changed

The garden went silent.

Not the uncomfortable silence from before.

This was different.

This was the kind of silence that came when someone finally said the one thing nobody was prepared to hear.

Daniel looked at me.

“What happened the night Dad died?””

I held his gaze.

For years, I had imagined this moment.

I imagined him asking.

I imagined telling him.

I imagined the anger, the pain, the questions.

But I never imagined it would happen while standing in the middle of his engagement party, surrounded by people who had just watched his future wife humiliate me.

Amelia crossed her arms.

“Go ahead.””

Her voice was almost confident again.

“Tell him.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“You know something.””

“I know enough.””

“What does that mean?””

She smiled faintly.

“It means your mother has spent years making herself look like the victim.””

My expression hardened.

“Be careful, Amelia.””

“Why?””

She looked at the guests.

“Because everyone wants to believe the quiet, humble woman is always the innocent one.””

Nobody laughed this time.

Daniel stepped closer to her.

“Stop.””

But Amelia continued.

“You never wondered why your father’s company almost collapsed after his death?””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

I closed my eyes.

I had hoped he would never hear about those months.

The months when I slept four hours a night.

The months when I sold jewelry, furniture, and everything valuable just to keep employees paid.

The months when I protected the company his father left behind.

Daniel looked at me.

“Mom?””

I took a breath.

“Your father died in a car accident.””

“I know.””

“But before that happened, he discovered someone had been stealing from the company.””

Daniel looked at Amelia.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Who?””

I answered quietly.

“Richard Whitmore.””

Amelia shook her head.

“That’s a lie.””

“No.””

My voice remained calm.

“Your grandfather used shell companies to move money away from Carter Holdings.””

Daniel stared.

“Why didn’t Dad tell me?””

“Because you were nineteen.””

“He could have trusted me.””

“He wanted you to have a normal life.””

Daniel looked away.

The hurt on his face was worse than anger.

Because he realized his father had been protecting him until the very end.

Amelia stepped forward.

“And then what?””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“What happened after your husband found out?””

The question sounded innocent.

But it was not.

She already knew.

Daniel noticed.

“Why are you asking like you were there?””

Amelia’s eyes moved quickly.

“I’m asking because your mother is making accusations.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You’re avoiding the question.””

She looked frustrated.

“I don’t believe this.””

“You don’t have to.””

Daniel pointed at the documents.

“But those records exist.””

Amelia looked around.

Then lowered her voice.

“Daniel, your mother is manipulating you.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

The woman who had sprayed me with a garden hose was accusing me of manipulation.

Daniel looked at me.

“Mom.””

I nodded.

“It’s time.””

I reached into my handbag again.

This time, I removed a small photograph.

An old one.

Daniel took it.

His eyebrows pulled together.

It was a picture of his father standing outside Carter Holdings.

Beside him was Richard Whitmore.

And beside Richard…

Was a younger Amelia.

Daniel stared.

“She was there?””

I nodded.

“Your father discovered Richard wasn’t working alone.””

Amelia’s face went pale.

“Enough.””

Her voice was sharp.

“Stop.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why were you there?””

“I was a child.””

“You knew my father?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

I noticed.

Everyone noticed.

“You said you didn’t know anything about my family.””

Amelia swallowed.

“I didn’t.””

“But you were photographed with my father.””

She looked at the picture.

Then back at him.

“My grandfather brought me to business events.””

“Then why did you never mention it?””

No answer.

Daniel’s shoulders dropped.

“I was going to marry you.””

Amelia softened.

“Daniel…”

“I was going to build a family with you.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I love you.””

He looked at her.

“I don’t know what’s real anymore.””

That sentence hurt her more than any accusation.

She stepped back.

Then she looked at me.

“You ruined everything.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You did that when you thought kindness was something only poor people needed to show.””

For the first time, Amelia looked ashamed.

But it disappeared quickly.

Because her phone began ringing.

She looked down.

Her expression changed.

She declined the call.

A second later, it rang again.

Daniel noticed.

“Who is calling you?””

“Nobody.””

“Then answer.””

“No.””

The third call came.

This time, the screen lit up long enough for Daniel to see the name.

His face changed.

“Richard?””

Amelia froze.

The entire garden seemed to stop moving.

Daniel looked at her.

“My grandfather’s name is saved in your phone.””

She said nothing.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with panic.

Then she did something unexpected.

She grabbed her purse.

“I need to go.””

Daniel stepped in front of her.

“No.””

“Move.””

“Not until you tell me the truth.””

Amelia stared at him.

Then whispered:

“You really want to know what happened the night your father died?””

Daniel went still.

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

Then smiled.

May you like

A cold, empty smile.

“Ask your mother why she was the last person to see him alive.””
