Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Folder

Daniel stared at the papers in his hands like they had turned into something dangerous.

The confident man who had walked across the lawn moments earlier—the man who had defended his mother, confronted his fiancée, and ended his engagement—was suddenly silent.

His fingers moved slowly across the page.

“Mom,” he said again, quieter this time.

“Why is the Whitmore family name here?””

Amelia stopped crying.

Her eyes moved from Daniel to the folder.

Then back to Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

No one answered.

The guests who had gathered around the garden suddenly became very interested in pretending they were not listening.

I looked at Daniel.

“You need to read everything before you ask me questions.””

He looked hurt.

“You knew something about them?””

“I knew something about your father.””

His expression changed.

The mention of his father always did that.

Daniel had been twenty-one when his father passed away. He remembered the man as a brilliant businessman, someone who built companies and shook hands with powerful people.

But he never knew the entire story.

There were parts of our family history I had protected him from.

Parts I thought would only bring him pain.

I had been wrong.

Daniel opened the folder again.

The first pages contained old legal documents.

Partnership agreements.

Property transfers.

Financial records.

Then he reached the final page.

His face went completely still.

“What is this?””

Amelia stepped closer.

“Daniel?””

He looked at me.

“Tell me.””

I took a slow breath.

“Your father did not build Carter Holdings alone.””

“I know that.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You know the story he told everyone.””

Daniel looked down.

“What are you saying?””

I glanced toward the mansion.

The same place where Amelia had laughed while spraying me with water.

The same place where wealthy guests had watched without saying a word.

“Your father had a business partner before he became successful.””

Daniel flipped through the papers.

“Richard Whitmore.””

The name hung in the air.

Amelia’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“You know him,” I said.

She immediately looked away.

“I’ve heard the name.””

“Interesting.””

Daniel noticed too.

“Amelia.””

She forced a smile.

“What?””

“Why did you react like that?””

“I didn’t.””

“You did.””

She crossed her arms.

“You’re seriously questioning me because your mother brought some random papers to our engagement party?””

The anger in her voice was different now.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

I had seen that kind of fear before.

The fear of someone who realizes a secret is no longer safe.

I turned toward Daniel.

“Your father trusted Richard Whitmore.””

Daniel frowned.

“What happened?””

“Richard betrayed him.””

The garden became quiet.

“Before Carter Holdings became what it is today, Richard tried to take control of everything. He created fake contracts, moved money without permission, and attempted to remove your father from his own company.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“But Dad never told me.””

“Because he wanted you to remember him as your father.””

My voice softened.

“Not as a man fighting enemies.””

Daniel looked down.

“And Amelia’s family?””

I nodded.

“Richard Whitmore was her grandfather.””

A wave of whispers moved through the guests.

Amelia immediately stepped forward.

“That’s ridiculous.””

I looked at her.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

Her voice grew louder.

“My grandfather was a respected businessman.””

“So was your father.””

“And you’re accusing my family because you don’t like me.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Amelia…”

“No, Daniel.””

She pointed at me.

“She showed up here, ruined our engagement, and now she’s telling you my family is evil?””

Her voice cracked.

“She hates me.””

I watched Daniel carefully.

A few hours earlier, he would have rushed to comfort her.

But now?

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

Amelia saw it too.

Her face changed.

“Daniel.””

He looked away.

She lowered her voice.

“After everything we’ve been through?””

He swallowed.

“I need the truth.””

Those four words broke something inside her.

Because she realized love was no longer enough to protect her.

She turned toward me.

“You waited until today?””

I remained calm.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to see who you were when you thought nobody important was watching.””

The guests went silent.

Amelia stared.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I wanted to know if you respected people without knowing their bank accounts.””

Her face reddened.

“You set me up?””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You revealed yourself.””

Daniel closed the folder.

“Mom, there’s more, isn’t there?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

“What?””

I reached into my handbag again.

This time, I removed a small envelope.

Daniel recognized the handwriting immediately.

His breath caught.

“That’s Dad’s handwriting.””

I nodded.

“He wrote this three weeks before he died.””

Daniel stared at the envelope.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because he asked me not to.””

The question in his eyes hurt more than anger.

“What did he say?””

I looked toward the mansion.

Then back at my son.

“He said if you ever became involved with the Whitmore family, I should make sure you knew the truth before signing anything.””

Daniel froze.

“Signing what?””

Before I could answer, Amelia spoke.

“Daniel, don’t listen to this.””

Everyone turned.

She stepped closer.

“You don’t understand what she’s doing.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What am I doing?””

“She’s trying to control your life.””

“No.””

Amelia shook her head.

“She’s always been controlling.””

The words were sharp.

Personal.

I saw Daniel flinch.

Because even if he was angry with Amelia, he still loved her.

Or at least, he loved who he thought she was.

Then Amelia made one mistake.

She looked at the folder.

And said:

“If you open that letter, you’ll destroy everything your father built.””

Daniel went completely still.

Slowly, he looked at her.

“How do you know what’s inside?””

Amelia’s face turned pale.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

She had no answer.
