Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Smile
Amelia ran.
Not far.
Just enough to show everyone she was afraid.
Daniel moved after her.
“Stop.””
She froze near the garden gate.
Slowly, she turned.
Her face was no longer the perfect image she had shown the world.
The elegant dress.
The flawless makeup.
The charming smile.
All of it was gone.
“I never wanted this.””
Daniel stared.
“Wanted what?””
“To hurt you.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
She looked at him.
“I can’t.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“You can.””
Amelia looked at him with anger.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand exactly.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You don’t know what Richard does.””
The name changed everything.
Daniel noticed.
“You’re afraid of your grandfather.””
She looked away.
That was enough.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“What did he do?””
Amelia didn’t answer.
I watched her carefully.
For the first time, I didn’t see arrogance.
I saw someone trapped.
But that did not erase what she had done.
Pain explained behavior.
It did not excuse it.
Thomas walked closer.
“Your grandfather threatened her.””
Amelia looked up sharply.
“Don’t.””
Daniel turned.
“Threatened you?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The guests became silent.
“He told me if I didn’t help him get close to Carter Holdings, he would destroy my father’s business.””
Daniel stared.
“So you dated me because of him?””
Her tears fell.
“At first.””
That answer hurt him.
He looked away.
“But then?””
Amelia wiped her face.
“Then I actually fell in love with you.””
Daniel didn’t speak.
She continued.
“I tried to stop.””
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because Richard had already started moving.””
Thomas frowned.
“What did he move?””
Amelia looked at him.
“The final documents.””
My stomach tightened.
“What documents?””
She looked at me.
“The documents your husband hid.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What documents?””
Thomas answered.
“The ownership transfer.””
Daniel stared.
“Explain.””
Thomas took a breath.
“Before your father died, he moved control of Carter Holdings into a trust.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“Why?””
“To protect it.””
I nodded.
“Your father knew Richard would try again.””
Thomas continued.
“The company was protected unless someone from outside the family could gain access through marriage.””
Daniel looked at Amelia.
The realization hit him.
“That’s why.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“That’s why you wanted to marry me.””
Amelia cried.
“No.””
“But it started that way.””
She didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
Daniel looked devastated.
Not angry.
Not even betrayed.
Broken.
Because he had loved someone who had entered his life with a hidden purpose.
I stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
He shook his head.
“I’m okay.””
He wasn’t.
Everyone knew.
Then Amelia whispered:
“There’s something else.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“Your father didn’t die because of Richard discovering the documents.””
Thomas turned sharply.
“What are you saying?””
Amelia looked terrified.
“He died because someone inside Carter Holdings betrayed him.””
My blood ran cold.
Thomas stared.
“Who?””
Amelia looked at me.
Then said:
“Someone your mother trusted.””
The garden fell silent.
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom?””
I felt the past returning.
The phone call.
The hospital.
The empty road.
The missing evidence.
The person who had disappeared before the police arrived.
I had spent years believing I knew who my enemies were.
But maybe I had been wrong.
Thomas stepped closer.
“Lena.””
I looked at him.
He lowered his voice.
“There is something you need to see.””
He reached into his briefcase.
And pulled out an old photograph.
My hands went cold before I even saw it.
Because I recognized the person standing beside my husband that night.
The person I had trusted.
The person who had promised to protect our family.
Thomas handed the picture to me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your husband’s killer may have been sitting at your dinner table.””
