Chapter 7: The Letter My Son Was Never Meant to Read

The garden lights flickered above us.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

For years, I had carried the weight of that night alone.

I had carried the fear.

The questions.

The anger.

And the promise I made to my husband before I watched him take his final breath.

But now Thomas Carter stood in front of Daniel with the truth in his hands.

The truth I had protected him from.

Daniel stared at the older man.

“My father’s accident wasn’t an accident?””

Thomas slowly shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

I saw the pain immediately.

Not because he blamed me.

Because he realized there was an entire part of his father’s life that had been hidden from him.

“Mom…”

I stepped closer.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I need to hear this.””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“What is that?””

“Evidence your father left behind.””

Amelia suddenly spoke.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone turned.

She laughed nervously.

“You’re all standing here believing some old story because this woman wants to destroy my family.””

Thomas looked at her.

“I was your grandfather’s attorney.””

Her face changed.

“And I know exactly what your family did.””

Amelia’s lips parted.

Thomas continued.

“Your grandfather didn’t just steal money from Carter Holdings.””

The guests listened closely.

“He tried to force Daniel’s father out of the company.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“How?””

Thomas opened the envelope.

“Through blackmail.””

The word landed heavily.

Daniel frowned.

“What kind of blackmail?””

Thomas looked at me.

Then at him.

“Your father discovered Richard was using company funds to hide illegal business deals.””

Amelia immediately shook her head.

“My grandfather was not a criminal.””

Thomas didn’t react.

“He knew your father had evidence.””

Daniel stared.

“So he killed him?””

Nobody answered.

But the silence was enough.

Daniel looked at me.

“Mom?””

I swallowed.

“Your father suspected he was in danger.””

“Did he tell you?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

The question was quiet.

But it hurt more than anger.

“Because you were twenty-one.””

“I was old enough to know.””

“You were old enough to lose your father and still have nightmares about it.””

Daniel looked away.

I continued.

“Your father knew Richard would come after anyone who threatened him.””

Thomas nodded.

“He was right.””

Amelia stepped forward.

“You’re blaming me for something my grandfather did?””

Thomas looked at her.

“No.””

He paused.

“But you know more than you admitted.””

Her face tightened.

“I was a child.””

“You were nineteen.””

The garden went silent again.

Daniel turned.

“Nineteen?””

Amelia looked at him.

“I was young.””

“You told me you barely knew my family.””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew something.””

She looked away.

That was the answer.

Daniel took a step back.

The woman he had planned to marry suddenly looked like someone he had never met.

“Why did you come into my life?””

Amelia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I loved you.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

She stepped closer.

“I did.””

“Then why hide this?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at me.

“Of her.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Amelia’s voice grew louder.

“You knew who I was from the beginning.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told Daniel.””

“I wanted to believe you were different.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You wanted to test me.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I wanted to give you a chance.””

That seemed to anger her more.

“A chance?””

“Yes.””

My voice stayed calm.

“To prove you loved my son more than your family’s revenge.””

Daniel froze.

“Revenge?””

Amelia said nothing.

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“That is why your father left the letter.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What letter?””

Thomas handed him another envelope.

“This one was addressed to you.””

Daniel took it slowly.

His fingers shook.

The handwriting was his father’s.

He opened it.

Everyone waited.

Daniel read silently.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

He looked at me.

“He knew.””

I frowned.

“Knew what?””

Daniel’s voice trembled.

“He knew Richard would try to use Amelia.””

Amelia went pale.

Daniel continued reading.

“He wrote that if Amelia ever entered my life, I should not judge her by her family name.””

He looked at me.

“He wanted me to give her a chance.””

Nobody expected that.

Not even me.

Thomas nodded.

“Your father believed people could choose who they became.””

Daniel looked back at the letter.

“But…”

His voice faded.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“There’s another page.””

He turned it over.

And his face went completely white.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at Amelia.

Then at me.

Then whispered:

“He wrote that if Amelia was involved…”

He stopped.

The garden held its breath.

“If Amelia was involved, I should look for the person controlling her.””

Amelia stepped backward.

Daniel stared at her.

“Who controls you?””

May you like

She didn’t answer.

And that silence was more frightening than any confession.
