Chapter 8: The Deal That Exposed Everything

I stared at Melissa.

Disappear quietly.

Those three words told me everything.

Not leave.

Not separate.

Disappear.

Like I was a problem to remove.

"What does that mean?""

Melissa looked uncomfortable.

"Daniel...""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"What does he want?""

She swallowed.

"He wants you to sign an agreement.""

"What kind of agreement?""

"That you won't interfere with Tyler anymore.""

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"He wants me to walk away from a child I helped raise?""

Melissa didn't answer.

Because she knew how it sounded.

I shook my head.

"And what do you want?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I want this to stop.""

"This?""

She looked around the room.

"The fighting.""

I looked at her.

"No, Melissa.""

My voice was calm.

"You want the consequences to stop.""

She wiped her face.

"I made mistakes.""

"Yes.""

"I was trying to help my son.""

"You keep saying that.""

"Because it's true.""

I nodded.

"Maybe part of it was true.""

She looked at me.

"But you also wanted control.""

Her silence confirmed it.

The next day, I met Mark.

We chose a public place.

A coffee shop.

Somewhere with people around.

Mark arrived twenty minutes late.

He looked exactly how I expected.

Confident.

Relaxed.

Like he believed the situation belonged to him.

He sat across from me.

"Daniel.""

I nodded.

"Mark.""

He smiled.

"I hear things got complicated.""

I almost laughed.

"Complicated?""

He leaned back.

"Look, let's not pretend.""

"Pretend what?""

"That you have a place in Tyler's life.""

I stared at him.

There it was.

The same belief.

The same arrogance.

I took out a folder.

"I have records.""

He looked at it.

"So?""

"So I was there.""

Mark smiled.

"Being around doesn't make you a father.""

I nodded.

"You're right.""

He looked surprised.

"I agree.""

I opened the folder.

"But being a father isn't just biology.""

His smile disappeared.

I placed photos on the table.

Tyler's games.

School events.

Family moments.

Mark glanced at them.

Then looked away.

"You spent a lot of time collecting memories.""

"No.""

I corrected him.

"I spent a lot of time living them.""

The conversation became colder.

Finally, Mark leaned forward.

"Let's make this simple.""

"I'm listening.""

"You walk away.""

"And?""

"You keep your money.""

I stared at him.

"My money?""

He shrugged.

"Melissa told me you're upset about finances.""

I laughed.

"So this was about money too.""

Mark didn't respond.

That was the answer.

I leaned back.

"You know what I find interesting?""

"What?""

"You both keep saying I don't matter.""

I looked him directly in the eyes.

"But you seem very interested in making sure I leave.""

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Because people who don't care about someone don't spend this much effort removing them.

Before he left, Mark placed a paper on the table.

"Think about it.""

I didn't touch it.

He stood.

"You're not Tyler's father, Daniel.""

I looked at him.

"No.""

I paused.

"But I was the one who showed up.""

Mark walked away.

I waited until he was gone.

Then I opened the folder I had brought.

Inside was something I had found that morning.

Something I hadn't shown Rebecca yet.

A bank statement.

Not mine.

Not Melissa's.

Mark's.

And on it was a monthly deposit.

From Melissa.

But the description wasn't what I expected.

It wasn't "support.""

It wasn't "loan.""

It was something else.

A payment.

A payment with a note attached.

I read the note again.

Then I felt my entire body go cold.

Because Melissa hadn't just been sending Mark money.

She had been paying him for something.

May you like

And the description said:

*"Custody preparation.""*
