Chapter 5: The Lie Written On Paper
I read the message three times.
Not because I didn't understand the words.
Because I didn't want to believe them.
*"Wait until you find out what she told the court about you.""*
My first thought was that it had to be a mistake.
Then I looked at the sender.
Unknown number.
My hands tightened around my phone.
Court?
What court?
I had never been involved in any legal battle with Melissa.
At least, not that I knew of.
I immediately called the number.
It rang twice.
Then went straight to voicemail.
I tried again.
Same result.
I stood beside my car, staring at my reflection in the window.
A month ago, I would have called Melissa first.
I would have asked her what was happening.
I would have given her the chance to explain.
But after discovering eighteen thousand dollars sent secretly to her ex-husband and another hidden account, I wasn't sure I could trust an explanation anymore.
I drove to my office instead of going home.
I needed a clear mind.
I needed facts.
Not emotions.
Not excuses.
Facts.
During my lunch break, I searched through every email connected to our household finances.
Then I found something.
A folder attachment from six months earlier.
The subject line was simple.
"Financial Review Documents.""
I remembered it.
Melissa had told me it was related to updating insurance information.
She asked me to sign several pages.
I had trusted her.
I clicked the attachment.
My stomach dropped.
It wasn't insurance.
It was a financial statement.
A statement that listed our household expenses.
But something was wrong.
My income was listed.
My mortgage contributions were listed.
My savings were listed.
But the document described me as someone who had "limited involvement in Tyler's life.""
I stared at the sentence.
Limited involvement.
The same man who had driven him to practice.
Helped with homework.
Paid for school supplies.
Fixed his broken bike.
Limited involvement.
I kept scrolling.
Then I saw another section.
"Parenting arrangement.""
My name was there.
But the description wasn't mine.
It said I had chosen not to take an active role.
I closed my eyes.
Melissa hadn't just hidden money.
She had rewritten the story of our marriage.
I printed everything.
Then I went home.
When I walked through the door, Melissa was sitting on the couch.
She looked nervous.
Like she had been waiting.
"Daniel.""
I placed the papers on the coffee table.
Her face changed instantly.
"What is this?""
"You tell me.""
She looked down.
Then looked away.
"Where did you get those?""
"That isn't my question.""
Silence.
I pointed at the page.
"You told someone I wasn't involved in Tyler's life.""
Melissa stood.
"Daniel, that's not what it means.""
"Then explain.""
"It was just paperwork.""
"Paperwork doesn't accidentally say things like that.""
She rubbed her forehead.
"You are twisting this.""
"No.""
I held up the page.
"You are the one who wrote it.""
Her voice became louder.
"I was trying to protect Tyler.""
"From what?""
She didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"From me?""
"From confusion.""
"What confusion?""
Melissa looked frustrated.
"You don't understand what it is like being a mother.""
That sentence angered me.
Not because she was a mother.
Because she used motherhood as a shield.
"I know I'm not Tyler's biological father.""
I pointed toward the paper.
"But you don't get to erase everything I've done just because it's convenient.""
Melissa's eyes softened for a moment.
"Daniel...""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You made a choice.""
She lowered her voice.
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"That if things changed, Tyler's father would lose access.""
I stared at her.
"So you lied about me to protect him?""
She didn't respond.
And that was enough.
I walked away.
But then she said something that stopped me.
"His father knows.""
I turned around.
"What?""
"Mark knows about the documents.""
My chest tightened.
"Why?""
Melissa hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Because he helped me prepare them.""
The room became silent.
Her ex-husband wasn't just receiving money.
He wasn't just benefiting from my support.
He was involved.
"Prepare them for what?""
Melissa looked terrified.
And for the first time, I saw something in her eyes that wasn't anger.
Fear.
"Daniel...""
"What?""
She swallowed.
"I think Mark is going to use them against you.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
She looked down.
"Because he wants more custody.""
The pieces started connecting.
The secret payments.
The documents.
The lies.
Suddenly, I understood.
I wasn't just being used financially.
I was being removed from the picture.
And the worst part?
The person helping make it happen was the woman I had married.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, there was a photo attached.
I opened it.
It was a picture of a document.
A legal document.
And at the bottom was a signature.
Melissa's signature.
May you like
The message underneath said:
*"Ask your wife why she claimed you were dangerous for Tyler.""*
