Chapter 7: The Truth Tyler Finally Heard

The call ended before Melissa could say another word.

For a few seconds, neither of us moved.

The only sound in the room was the ticking clock above the kitchen counter.

A normal sound.

A peaceful sound.

But nothing about my life felt peaceful anymore.

Melissa slowly lowered her phone.

"Daniel...""

I raised my hand.

"Don't.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I can explain.""

I looked at her.

"That's the problem.""

"What?""

"You always explain after you're caught.""

She looked hurt.

But I couldn't tell if she was hurt because she had betrayed me or because her plan was falling apart.

"How long?"" I asked.

She wiped her face.

"How long what?""

"How long have you and Mark been preparing this?""

She looked away.

That was enough.

I nodded.

"Months?""

She didn't answer.

"Years?""

"Daniel, it wasn't like that.""

"Then what was it like?""

She sat down.

"I was trying to make sure Tyler was okay.""

I laughed quietly.

"Every time you say that, you make it sound like I was the threat.""

"You don't understand.""

"No.""

I pointed at the papers.

"I understand perfectly.""

Melissa looked at the documents.

"Mark said things.""

"What things?""

"That Tyler needed his biological father.""

I stared at her.

"And you agreed?""

"I was confused.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You weren't confused.""

My voice became quieter.

"You made choices.""

She looked down.

For the first time, she didn't have an argument ready.

That told me more than anything.

Later that afternoon, I met with Rebecca again.

I showed her the messages.

The documents.

The custody conversation I had overheard.

She read everything carefully.

Then she looked at me.

"Daniel, you need to understand something.""

"What?""

"Your biggest challenge is not the accusation.""

I frowned.

"Then what is?""

"The fact that Melissa created a story before you knew there was a story.""

I understood what she meant.

She had been preparing.

I had been living.

And while I was building memories, she was building a case.

Rebecca helped me organize everything.

Photos.

Receipts.

School records.

Messages.

Every little moment I had shared with Tyler.

The first basketball game.

The science project.

The time he got sick before a school trip and called me instead of his mother because he was scared.

Things Melissa probably forgot.

Things I never would.

Two days later, I received a call from Tyler's school.

The counselor wanted to speak with me.

I almost didn't go.

Not because I didn't care.

Because I was afraid.

Afraid that another person had already heard Melissa's version.

When I arrived, the counselor looked uncomfortable.

"Mr. Carter, thank you for coming.""

I sat down.

"Is something wrong?""

She folded her hands.

"There have been some concerns about Tyler.""

My heart tightened.

"What kind of concerns?""

She hesitated.

"Tyler has been saying that he feels caught between adults.""

I closed my eyes.

That wasn't what I expected.

"He said that?""

"Yes.""

The counselor looked at me.

"He also said something interesting.""

"What?""

"He said he doesn't know who is telling the truth anymore.""

That sentence stayed with me.

Because Tyler wasn't a weapon.

He was a kid trapped between two stories.

I asked if I could speak with him.

A few minutes later, Tyler walked into the room.

He looked nervous.

"Hey.""

"Hey.""

We sat quietly.

Finally, I said:

"Tyler, I want to ask you something.""

He nodded.

"Do you think I hate you?""

His eyes widened.

"No.""

"Do you think I don't care about you?""

He looked at the floor.

"Sometimes I did.""

I swallowed.

"Why?""

"Because Mom said you were only pretending.""

The honesty hurt.

But I appreciated it.

"Tyler, can I tell you something?""

He nodded.

"I can't control what your mom says.""

He looked at me.

"I can't control what your dad says.""

I paused.

"But I can control what I do.""

His eyes became wet.

"I know you helped me.""

"Then remember that.""

He looked confused.

"What happens now?""

I took a breath.

"I don't know.""

And that was the truth.

"But no matter what happens between adults, you shouldn't have to choose sides.""

For the first time in weeks, Tyler looked like the kid I remembered.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just scared.

Then he whispered:

"Daniel?""

"Yeah?""

"Can I tell you something?""

"Of course.""

He looked toward the door.

"Mom told me not to tell you.""

My stomach tightened.

"Tell me what?""

He lowered his voice.

"She and Dad were going to make you leave.""

I froze.

"Why?""

Tyler looked terrified.

"Because Dad said once everyone believed you weren't family, you wouldn't have any reason to stay.""

I sat there silently.

Because that was the moment I understood.

They weren't trying to protect Tyler.

They were trying to erase me.

Before I left the school, Tyler grabbed my arm.

"Daniel.""

I turned around.

"Are you really leaving?""

I looked at him.

And I realized something.

No matter what Melissa had done, there was one thing she hadn't been able to destroy.

The bond Tyler and I had built.

"I don't know what happens next.""

He looked down.

"But I don't want you gone.""

Those words almost broke me.

Because they were the first honest words I had heard in a long time.

That night, when I returned home, I found Melissa waiting.

She looked different.

Defeated.

"Daniel.""

I placed my keys down.

"What?""

She took a deep breath.

"Mark wants to meet.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

She looked nervous.

"Because he knows you found out.""

"And?""

Her voice dropped.

"He wants to make a deal.""

I frowned.

"A deal?""

Melissa nodded.

May you like

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"He wants you to disappear quietly.""
