Chapter 3: The Statements She Never Expected Me To Find
I sat in my car for almost ten minutes after Melissa asked me one question.
"How much do you know?""
The strange part wasn't the fear in her voice.
It was the fact that she didn't ask what I was talking about.
She didn't say, "What statements?""
She didn't say, "What money?""
She already knew.
I looked down at the folder sitting on the passenger seat.
For months, I had ignored small things.
A transfer here.
A vague explanation there.
A sudden emergency that always seemed to require my help.
I kept telling myself Melissa was overwhelmed.
I kept telling myself being a husband meant trusting my wife.
But trust doesn't mean refusing to see what is right in front of you.
"Daniel?"" Melissa said through the phone.
I finally answered.
"I found the transfers.""
Silence.
Not normal silence.
The kind of silence where someone is quickly searching for a way out.
"What transfers?""
I almost laughed.
"Don't do that, Melissa.""
Her breathing changed.
"What are you accusing me of?""
"I'm not accusing you of anything.""
I opened the folder.
"I'm looking at the evidence.""
"You went through my things?""
"No.""
I stared at the bank statements.
"These are from our joint account.""
Another silence.
Then her voice became defensive.
"You are making assumptions.""
"Then explain them.""
"Explain what?""
"The money.""
She didn't answer.
I continued.
"Every month, money leaves our account under the description of Tyler's expenses. But it isn't going toward Tyler.""
"Daniel, you don't understand.""
"Then help me understand.""
I waited.
Nothing.
Finally, she said, "It's complicated.""
That was the answer people gave when the truth was simple but embarrassing.
"Complicated how?""
"Tyler's father needed help.""
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The sentence I had been waiting for.
"His father?""
"Yes.""
"You mean the man who supposedly has the authority to raise him?""
Melissa became quiet.
"Daniel...""
"No, answer me.""
My voice stayed calm.
"Yesterday, you told me Tyler already has a father who can tell him what to do.""
I looked at the statements.
"But somehow that same father needs me to pay his bills?""
"It's not like that.""
"Then what is it like?""
She didn't respond.
I could hear frustration building in her breathing.
"You are being unreasonable.""
I almost couldn't believe it.
After everything.
After discovering thousands of dollars being moved without my knowledge.
I was the unreasonable one.
"Melissa, did Tyler's father ask you for money?""
"Yes.""
"Did you tell me?""
"No.""
"Why?""
She didn't answer.
And that silence was louder than any confession.
I ended the call.
Not because I had all the answers.
Because I needed to see everything.
The next morning, I woke up early.
Melissa was already in the kitchen.
She looked tired.
Not guilty.
Tired.
Like she was exhausted from dealing with the consequences of something she had done.
"I made coffee," she said.
I ignored the cup.
"How long?""
She looked at me.
"How long what?""
"How long have you been sending him money?""
She sighed.
"Daniel...""
"How long?""
"Two years.""
Two years.
The number hit me harder than I expected.
Two years of trusting someone.
Two years of believing every sacrifice was for my family.
I pulled out a chair.
"Sit down.""
She hesitated.
Then she sat.
"I want the truth.""
Melissa looked away.
"His situation got difficult.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
"He lost his job.""
"And?""
"And he needed help.""
I nodded.
"How much?""
She didn't speak.
"How much, Melissa?""
"About eighteen thousand dollars.""
The room became completely still.
I stared at her.
"Eighteen thousand?""
She nodded slowly.
"I was going to pay it back.""
"When?""
She looked down.
"I don't know.""
I leaned back.
"So you took money from our account and gave it to your ex-husband.""
"I didn't take it.""
"You hid it.""
Her face hardened.
"I was trying to help.""
"By lying to me?""
"By protecting my son.""
That sentence stopped me.
Because she believed it.
She truly believed using me was the same as protecting Tyler.
"Tyler had nothing to do with this.""
"Everything I did was for him.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"Everything you did was because you didn't want to deal with the consequences of your choices.""
Melissa stood up.
"Don't talk to me like I'm some terrible person.""
"I didn't say that.""
"But you're thinking it.""
I looked at her.
"I think you forgot something important.""
"What?""
"I married you.""
I pointed toward the hallway.
"I didn't marry your ex-husband.""
I paused.
"And I definitely didn't agree to become responsible for him.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"So what now?""
It was the first time she asked.
Not what I felt.
Not how she could fix it.
Just what happened next.
I picked up the statements.
"Now I find out where every dollar went.""
Her expression changed.
"Daniel.""
"No.""
I held up my hand.
"I spent years believing I was building a family.""
I looked at the papers.
"Now I need to know what I was actually funding.""
I walked upstairs.
But before I reached the bedroom, I heard Melissa's phone ring downstairs.
I stopped.
I wasn't trying to listen.
But then I heard a name.
A name that made me freeze.
"Yes, Mark. He's found out.""
My heart dropped.
Because Melissa wasn't talking about Tyler's father like someone who needed help.
She was talking like someone who was part of a plan.
May you like
And then I heard her whisper:
"Don't worry. He doesn't know about the other account yet.""
