Chapter 4: The Account She Hid From Everyone

I stood on the stairs completely still.

The house I had lived in for four years suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Every picture on the walls.

Every family dinner.

Every holiday.

Everything looked different.

Because now I wasn't just questioning money.

I was questioning reality.

Melissa was still downstairs.

Still talking.

Still believing I couldn't hear her.

"Mark, please calm down," she whispered.

I moved closer.

Just enough to hear.

"I said I handled it.""

A pause.

"No, he only found the transfers.""

My stomach tightened.

Only found the transfers.

Meaning there was more.

Something worse.

I slowly walked back upstairs before she could notice me.

I closed the bedroom door.

Then I sat on the edge of the bed.

For the first time in my marriage, I felt like a stranger inside my own home.

A few minutes later, Melissa entered.

Her expression was different.

Controlled.

Careful.

The way someone looks when they are trying to fix a mistake.

"Daniel.""

I didn't look up.

"Who is Mark?""

She stopped.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

The fear.

"Why?""

"I heard you talking.""

She forced a laugh.

"You were listening?""

"No.""

I looked at her.

"You were talking loudly.""

She crossed her arms.

"Mark is Tyler's father.""

"Your ex-husband?""

"Yes.""

"Why did you say he doesn't know about the other account?""

Her face went pale.

Then she recovered quickly.

"You misunderstood.""

"No.""

I stood.

"I heard every word.""

Melissa looked frustrated.

"You are trying to make me the villain.""

"I am trying to understand why my wife has secret accounts.""

She looked away.

"It isn't what you think.""

"Then tell me what it is.""

Nothing.

Again.

The silence.

The same silence.

I walked toward my desk and opened my laptop.

Melissa watched me.

"What are you doing?""

"Looking.""

"At what?""

"The truth.""

I logged into our financial records.

The joint account was only part of it.

There were transfers.

Payments.

Withdrawals.

Then I noticed something.

A monthly deposit.

Not from me.

From Melissa.

Small amounts.

But consistent.

Going into a separate account.

An account I had never seen.

I turned the screen toward her.

"What is this?""

Her face changed.

"I can explain.""

"I hope you can.""

She sat down slowly.

"Daniel...""

"How long?""

She didn't answer.

"How long have you had money hidden from me?""

"It's not hidden.""

I looked at her.

"Then why didn't I know about it?""

She swallowed.

"Because I knew you would react like this.""

I laughed quietly.

"Like what?""

"Like I betrayed you.""

The words hung in the air.

Because even she realized what she had admitted.

I closed the laptop.

"Melissa, do you hear yourself?""

She wiped her eyes.

"I was scared.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing control.""

That answer confused me.

"Control?""

She looked at the floor.

"When we got married, everything was complicated. Tyler's father was struggling. Tyler needed things. I needed stability.""

"And I gave you that.""

"Yes.""

"And then?""

She didn't answer.

I nodded.

"Then you started seeing me as the person who would solve everything.""

Her silence confirmed it.

I walked to the window.

Outside, our neighbors were starting their mornings.

Cars leaving.

People going to work.

Normal lives.

I wondered how many people around us had no idea what was happening behind closed doors.

Then Melissa said something that shocked me.

"I never thought you would actually leave.""

I turned around.

"Why?""

She looked at me.

"Because you always stayed.""

That sentence hurt more than the money.

Because she wasn't afraid of losing me.

She was afraid of losing what I provided.

I picked up the folder.

"I need space.""

Her eyes widened.

"Daniel.""

"No.""

I walked toward the door.

"Right now, I don't know if I'm angry because of the money...""

I looked at her.

"Or because I spent four years loving someone who thought I would never stop giving.""

I stepped outside.

But as I reached my car, my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

May you like

There was one sentence.

*"Daniel, if you think Melissa was hiding money from you, wait until you find out what she told the court about you.""*
