Chapter 6: The Person I Never Knew
I didn't sleep that night.
I sat at the kitchen table until sunrise, staring at the photo on my phone.
The word kept replaying in my mind.
Dangerous.
That was the word someone had used about me.
Me.
The person who had spent years trying to help a child who wasn't even biologically mine.
I kept asking myself one question.
Why?
Why would Melissa say something like that?
At 7:00 a.m., I called a family attorney.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed to protect myself.
The attorney, Rebecca Lawson, listened quietly while I explained everything.
The money.
The hidden accounts.
The documents.
The accusations.
When I finished, she looked at me carefully.
"Daniel, do you have proof of your involvement with Tyler?""
I nodded.
"Everything.""
Photos.
School emails.
Payment records.
Messages.
I had never kept them as evidence.
I kept them because they were memories.
But now they were something else.
Proof.
Rebecca looked through the documents I brought.
Then she stopped.
"This statement is concerning.""
"What?""
She tapped the page.
"Melissa claimed you refused to participate in Tyler's upbringing.""
I laughed bitterly.
"That's not true.""
"I know.""
She looked at the records.
"But proving it matters.""
I leaned back.
"So she created a story.""
"Possibly.""
"Why would someone do that?""
Rebecca didn't answer immediately.
Then she said:
"Usually, when people create a false narrative, there is a reason they need others to believe it.""
I understood.
Mark.
Tyler's father.
The custody issue.
Everything.
I left the office with copies of every document.
When I arrived home, Tyler was sitting at the kitchen table.
He looked different.
Not angry.
Not entitled.
Just confused.
"Daniel?""
I stopped.
"Yeah?""
He looked down.
"Are you leaving?""
That question caught me off guard.
I sat across from him.
"Why do you think that?""
"Mom said you were mad.""
I looked at him.
"Tyler, have you ever thought I didn't care about you?""
He hesitated.
Then quietly said:
"Sometimes.""
That hurt.
But I didn't get angry.
"Why?""
He shrugged.
"Because Mom said you weren't my dad.""
I swallowed.
"Did she say that often?""
He looked uncomfortable.
"Sometimes.""
I nodded.
Then I asked:
"Did she ever tell you I didn't want to be involved?""
His eyes moved away.
And I knew.
"Tyler.""
He whispered:
"She said you were only helping because you wanted to look good.""
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Because that wasn't just a lie about me.
It was a lie that affected how a child saw someone who cared about him.
I took a breath.
"Tyler, listen to me.""
He looked up.
"I never helped you because I wanted credit.""
I paused.
"I helped because I cared.""
He didn't say anything.
Then he quietly asked:
"Did you really not want to buy the shoes because you hate me?""
My heart sank.
"No.""
I shook my head.
"Absolutely not.""
"Then why?""
"Because your mom told me I couldn't be responsible for decisions involving you while still expecting me to pay for everything.""
Tyler looked confused.
"I don't understand.""
"I know.""
I gave him a small smile.
"Adults don't always handle things correctly.""
For the first time in days, he looked like a kid instead of someone caught in a battle.
Then the front door opened.
Melissa walked in.
She froze when she saw me with Tyler.
"What are you doing?""
Her tone immediately changed.
Protective.
Suspicious.
"Talking.""
She looked at Tyler.
"Go upstairs.""
Tyler stood.
But before he left, he looked at me.
Not with anger.
Not with expectation.
Just uncertainty.
After he went upstairs, Melissa closed the door.
"You talked to him.""
"Yes.""
"You had no right.""
I stared at her.
"No right?""
She stepped closer.
"You are making things worse.""
"No.""
I held up the documents.
"You did that.""
Her eyes moved to the papers.
Then she froze.
"Where did you get those?""
"Does it matter?""
Her face changed.
A small crack of fear appeared.
"Daniel...""
I looked at her.
"Did you tell the court I was dangerous?""
She didn't answer.
That was all I needed.
I slowly nodded.
Then I said:
"I spent four years trying to become family.""
I placed the documents on the table.
"And you spent those same four years building a case to prove I wasn't.""
Melissa's eyes filled with tears.
But before she could speak, her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Then immediately went pale.
I noticed the name.
Mark.
She answered.
And I heard his voice through the speaker.
"Did he find out?""
Melissa looked at me.
Neither of us moved.
Then Mark said:
"Because if Daniel knows about the custody papers, we need to move faster.""
My heart stopped.
Custody papers.
Move faster.
I looked at Melissa.
And realized this wasn't just about money anymore.
May you like
They weren't trying to use me.
They were trying to remove me.
