Chapter 9: The Truth Buried Before My Birth

I stared at the sentence written at the top of the page.

*“Ethan was never supposed to survive.””*

For several seconds, my brain refused to understand what I was reading.

The words were simple.

But they felt impossible.

I looked at Michael.

Then Claire.

Then Daniel.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody answered.

That silence told me more than any explanation could.

I looked down at the document again.

The paper was old.

Yellowed.

The ink had faded.

But the details were clear.

My name.

My birthday.

My parents’ names.

And a record of something I had never heard before.

A family history that had been erased.

“Someone explain this.””

My voice echoed through the basement.

Claire stepped forward slowly.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

I held up the paper.

“I am done hearing half-truths.””

My eyes moved between everyone.

“I spent years believing I knew my own life.””

I looked at the hidden rooms.

“The house.””

I looked at Ava and Noah.

“The children.””

I looked at Michael.

“My family.””

Then I looked at Claire.

“My wife.””

My voice cracked.

“And apparently all of it was built on secrets.””

Claire began crying.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

She looked at Daniel.

Michael answered.

“From him.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You always make me the villain.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Because you always choose control over people.””

Daniel laughed.

“You think you’re better?””

“No.””

Michael looked at the children.

“I think they deserved better.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Tell me the truth.””

He stared at me.

“You really want it?””

“Yes.””

He smiled slightly.

“Fine.””

Claire immediately shook her head.

“Ethan, don’t.””

But I needed to know.

Daniel took a slow breath.

“Your father and my father were business partners.””

I frowned.

“My father?””

Daniel nodded.

“Thomas.””

I felt a strange pain hearing my father’s name.

He had died when I was young.

I barely remembered him.

“What does my father have to do with this?””

Daniel looked at the document.

“Thomas discovered something.””

“What?””

“That someone in the family was stealing money.””

Michael looked at him.

“Don’t change the story.””

Daniel ignored him.

“He found out your grandfather had created a hidden trust.””

I stared.

“A trust?””

Daniel nodded.

“A private account meant for the next generation.””

My eyes moved toward the document.

“And me?””

“You were the only child carrying the legal claim.””

The room became silent.

I understood.

Not everything.

But enough.

“You tried to get rid of me.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“I tried to protect my family.””

“No.””

Michael shook his head.

“You tried to take what wasn’t yours.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You were supposed to disappear.””

Michael stepped forward.

“And you failed.””

I looked at Claire.

“Where does she fit into this?””

Claire wiped her tears.

“Daniel found me because of Ava.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He knew I had access to information about your family.””

Daniel smiled.

“Claire was useful.””

The way he said it made my stomach turn.

“She wasn’t a person to you.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

“She was a tool.””

Still nothing.

I looked at Claire.

“And me?””

Her eyes filled.

“You were never supposed to be involved.””

“Then why did you marry me?””

She broke down.

“Because I fell in love with you.””

The answer was simple.

But after everything…

I didn’t know if I could believe anything anymore.

Michael stepped closer.

“Ethan.””

I looked at him.

“There’s something else.””

Of course there was.

There was always something else.

“What?””

He looked at Daniel.

“Daniel didn’t just hide Ava and Noah.””

My jaw tightened.

“What now?””

Michael pointed at the document.

“He changed the records of your birth.””

I froze.

“My birth?””

He nodded.

“He wanted everyone to believe you had no connection to Thomas.””

My hands shook.

“Why?””

“Because if you disappeared, Daniel would control everything.””

Daniel suddenly moved.

Not toward us.

Toward the door.

I noticed.

“Where are you going?””

He stopped.

For the first time, he looked like a man who knew he had lost.

“This isn’t over.””

I stepped forward.

“Yes, it is.””

Daniel looked at me.

“No.””

He smiled.

“Because you still don’t know the biggest secret.””

Claire’s face changed.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“You never asked why Ethan survived.””

Everyone went silent.

My heart started beating faster.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel looked at Michael.

“Tell him.””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“Ethan…”

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“You weren’t the only baby that night.””

My breath stopped.

“What?””

Michael looked at Claire.

“Your mother gave birth to twins.””

The basement went completely silent.

I laughed once.

Because my mind couldn’t accept it.

“Twins?””

Michael nodded.

“You had a sister.””

I stared.

“Where is she?””

Nobody answered.

Then Claire whispered:

“She’s the reason Daniel kept searching.””

My skin turned cold.

“Why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because she knows the truth.””

I felt dizzy.

A hidden daughter.

A missing sister.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life taken away.

Then Lily slowly walked forward.

She was holding something.

A small bracelet.

“Daddy…”

I looked down.

She handed it to me.

“I found this with the pictures.””

I recognized it instantly.

Because engraved inside was a name.

May you like

A name that made Claire collapse.

*Emily.*
