Chapter 5: The Photograph That Should Not Exist
I stared at the photograph in Lily’s small hands.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Claire.
Not Daniel.
Not even Ava.
The entire room felt frozen in time.
“Lily,” I said quietly, “where did you get that?””
My daughter looked nervous.
“I found it behind the wall.””
My eyes moved toward the broken wooden panel.
Behind it.
The hidden space.
The place where my wife had kept secrets from me.
I slowly reached for the photograph.
Lily handed it over.
The moment my fingers touched it, I felt a strange chill.
It was old.
The edges were worn.
The colors had faded.
But the image was clear.
Claire was standing outside a hospital entrance.
She looked younger.
Maybe ten years younger.
She was holding baby Ava.
And beside her…
Was another baby.
A second infant.
My breath stopped.
Because standing next to Claire was me.
Except I wasn’t standing there as a father.
I was younger.
Different.
But it was unmistakably my face.
My stomach twisted.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel watched me carefully.
“Is it?””
I looked up.
“What did you do?””
He smiled slightly.
“I didn’t do anything.””
I turned toward Claire.
She looked broken.
Like she had spent years trying to bury this exact moment.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
I held up the photograph.
“Explain.””
She looked at Lily.
Then Ava.
Then me.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
“That’s what you said about Ava.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“And I was wrong.””
The anger inside me was fighting with confusion.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted answers.
But two children were standing in that room.
Two children who had been surrounded by secrets their entire lives.
“Who is the baby?””
Claire looked down.
“My son.””
The words hit me like a wave.
I stared at her.
“What?””
Daniel looked away.
Ava whispered:
“I had a brother.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
My voice became quiet.
“Where is he?””
No one answered.
That silence terrified me.
I looked at Daniel.
“Where is he?””
Daniel shrugged.
“I thought you would figure it out eventually.””
“Stop playing games.””
His expression hardened.
“Games?””
He pointed at Claire.
“She built this entire life on a lie.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked at me.
“I thought he was gone.””
Again.
Those words.
Gone.
Not dead.
Not missing.
Gone.
I stepped closer.
“Claire, I need the truth.””
She took a shaking breath.
“When Ava was born, Daniel and I were already falling apart.””
Daniel laughed.
“Falling apart because you betrayed me.””
Claire ignored him.
“I wanted to leave. I wanted to take my children and start over.””
My eyes moved to the photograph.
“Children.””
She nodded.
“Both of them.””
Ava hugged herself.
“My brother?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“His name was Noah.””
The name hung in the air.
I looked at Lily.
Then back at Claire.
“Why don’t I know this?””
“Because you weren’t supposed to.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What does that mean?””
Claire wiped her tears.
“Ethan…”
Her voice broke.
“Before you and I met, there was a night when everything changed.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Tell him.””
Claire looked at him with hatred.
“Leave.””
Daniel smiled.
“You still think you can control the story.””
I ignored him.
“Claire.””
She looked at me.
“The night I left Daniel, someone followed me.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
“Daniel.””
His face changed.
“That’s a lie.””
“You came to the house.””
“I came to talk.””
“You came to take the children.””
Ava covered her ears.
I immediately crouched beside her.
“It’s okay.””
But Claire continued.
“I managed to get Ava out.””
Her voice became smaller.
“But Noah…”
She stopped.
I could see the memory hurting her.
“What happened to Noah?””
Claire looked toward the photograph.
“He disappeared.””
The room became silent.
I looked at Daniel.
“You took him?””
“No.””
“Then where is he?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
And that was the first time I saw fear in his eyes.
Not anger.
Fear.
Ava noticed too.
She whispered:
“He knows.””
Everyone looked at her.
I frowned.
“Knows what?””
Ava looked at Daniel.
“He knows where Noah is.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You’re confused.””
“No.””
Ava shook her head.
“You told Mommy he was gone.””
Claire froze.
“Ava…”
The little girl continued.
“You said if Mommy looked for him, something bad would happen.””
I looked at Daniel.
The room suddenly felt dangerous.
“Ethan,” Claire whispered.
I turned toward her.
“What?””
“You need to understand something.””
Her voice trembled.
“Daniel doesn’t let people leave.””
Daniel smiled.
“You’re making me sound like a monster.””
I stared at him.
“You kept a child inside a wall.””
His smile disappeared.
“That wasn’t my choice.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked toward Claire.
“She put Ava there.””
My eyes widened.
“No.””
Claire immediately shook her head.
“He’s lying.””
Daniel pointed at the hidden space.
“Ask her why there was a room ready for a child.””
I looked at Claire.
She looked away.
And that was enough.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
I felt exhausted.
But then something happened.
Ava stepped forward.
She looked at me.
“Daddy…”
I looked down.
“Yes?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know where Noah is.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small piece of paper.
Old.
Folded.
I opened it.
There was only one sentence written on it.
A sentence that made my blood run cold.
*“If Ethan finds Ava, bring Noah somewhere safe.””*
I looked up.
“Who wrote this?””
Ava whispered:
May you like
“Noah.””
And then the lights in the house suddenly went out.
