Chapter 6: The Child Waiting In The Basement

Darkness swallowed the room.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

The only sound was the sharp breathing of everyone standing there.

Then Lily cried out.

“Daddy?””

I immediately moved toward her.

“I’m here.””

I grabbed her hand.

Ava reached for Claire.

Daniel disappeared into the darkness.

That was the first thing I noticed.

He wasn’t scared.

He was moving.

Like he knew exactly where he was going.

“Where did he go?”” I asked.

Claire’s face turned pale.

“Ethan…”

“What?””

“He knows this house better than anyone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“This house?””

She nodded.

“Daniel helped build it.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“You brought him here?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“He followed me here.””

The lights flickered.

Then came back.

The room was empty.

Daniel was gone.

I grabbed my phone.

No signal.

I looked at Claire.

“Why can’t I call anyone?””

Her face changed.

“What?””

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the entire street was dark.

Not just our house.

The neighborhood.

A power outage.

But something felt wrong.

Too convenient.

Ava tugged on my sleeve.

“Daddy.””

I looked down.

“What?””

She pointed toward the floor.

A small piece of paper had been placed there.

Nobody had seen it happen.

I picked it up.

Three words.

*“Come downstairs.””*

My chest tightened.

“Where?””

Ava whispered:

“The basement.””

Claire immediately shook her head.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You know something.””

She grabbed my arm.

“Ethan, please.””

“Where is Noah?””

She started crying.

“I don’t know.””

“But you know something.””

She looked away.

And I knew.

She was still hiding something.

I walked toward the basement door.

Claire followed.

“Ethan, don’t.””

I opened it.

The stairs disappeared into darkness.

The basement was unfinished.

Old boxes.

Dusty shelves.

A cold smell.

I turned on my flashlight.

The beam moved across the room.

Nothing.

Then I saw it.

A small wooden chair.

A blanket.

A child’s drawing taped to the wall.

My heart dropped.

Someone had been here.

Recently.

I stepped closer.

The drawing showed a family.

A mother.

A father.

Three children.

I stared at it.

Three children.

Not two.

Three.

At the bottom was a name.

Noah.

I heard Claire gasp behind me.

“You knew.””

She covered her mouth.

“I didn’t.””

“Then why is this here?””

She couldn’t answer.

A sound came from the far corner.

A small cough.

I turned.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then a voice.

A child’s voice.

“Is Daddy there?””

My entire body froze.

I looked at Claire.

She was crying.

“No…”

I moved toward the sound.

Behind an old shelf was another hidden door.

Another secret.

Another place someone had been hiding.

I grabbed the handle.

Claire screamed.

“Ethan, wait!””

I stopped.

“What?””

Her face was filled with terror.

“Because if Noah is there…”

She swallowed.

“You need to know the truth about why he was hidden.””

I stared at her.

“Tell me.””

She shook her head.

“I can’t.””

The voice behind the door spoke again.

This time louder.

“Mommy?””

Claire collapsed.

“Noah…”

I opened the door.

Inside was a small room.

A child sat on the floor.

Older than Ava.

Maybe ten years old.

His eyes adjusted to the flashlight.

He looked at me.

Then at Claire.

Then at Ava.

And whispered:

“You came back.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because on his wrist…

Was the same birthmark.

The same mark I had.

The same mark Ava had.

But that wasn’t what terrified me.

It was the photograph beside him.

A photograph of three children.

Ava.

Noah.

And Lily.

Taken years before Lily was born.

I slowly turned toward Claire.

“What did you do?””

She was crying uncontrollably.

“I was trying to protect them.””

I looked at the three children.

Three children connected by secrets.

Three children connected by my blood.

Then Noah said something that made the entire world stop.

“Daddy…”

May you like

He looked directly at me.

“You’re not the first man she called that.””
