Chapter 4: The Truth My Wife Buried

The door opened slowly.

Too slowly.

I moved in front of Ava and Lily.

My body reacted before my mind could.

Protect them first.

Ask questions later.

The hallway light spilled into the room.

A man stood there.

Older.

Maybe in his late fifties.

Gray hair.

A calm expression.

Almost too calm.

He looked at me.

Then at Claire.

Then at Ava.

And smiled.

“Looks like we’re finally done hiding.””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Ethan, don’t listen to him.””

The man tilted his head.

“Still telling him what to think, Claire?””

My stomach tightened.

“Who are you?””

The man stepped into the room.

“My name is Daniel Cole.””

Ava immediately moved closer to me.

“Daddy, that’s him.””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“Careful, little girl.””

I stepped forward.

“Stay away from her.””

He looked at me.

“You have no idea what you’re protecting.””

I stared at him.

“I know enough.””

“No.””

His voice remained calm.

“You know what Claire wants you to know.””

Claire’s face hardened.

“Leave.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“After all these years?””

He looked around Lily’s room.

“After all the lies?””

I turned toward Claire.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

She didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than anything.

Daniel noticed.

“She never told you about the accident, did she?””

My eyes moved back to him.

“What accident?””

Claire whispered:

“Daniel, stop.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You deserve the truth.””

I felt my hands tighten into fists.

“Then tell me.””

Daniel smiled.

“Six years ago, Claire gave birth to Ava.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“But what you don’t know…”

He looked at Claire.

“…is that Ava wasn’t supposed to disappear.””

The room went silent.

“What does that mean?””

Claire stepped forward.

“Ethan, please.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Not another secret.””

She stopped.

Daniel continued.

“Claire and I were married before.””

My mind went blank.

The room seemed to tilt.

I looked at my wife.

“Is that true?””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

“You were married to him?””

“Years ago.””

“And Ava?””

Claire nodded.

“My daughter.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“Our daughter.””

Ava immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at Daniel.

“You’re not my daddy.””

The smile disappeared from his face.

“You don’t remember me.””

Ava backed away.

“You were mean.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Something dark.

Something angry.

Then it was gone.

“Children misunderstand things.””

I stepped between them.

“No.””

My voice was low.

“Children remember fear.””

Daniel stared at me.

For the first time, his calm expression cracked.

Claire grabbed my hand.

“Ethan, I need to tell you everything.””

I looked at her.

“Now.””

She nodded.

“When Ava was born, Daniel changed.””

Daniel laughed.

“Changed?””

“You became obsessed.””

His smile faded.

Claire continued.

“You wanted control over everything.””

“That’s not true.””

“You wouldn’t let me leave.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“And you ran away.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Ava.

“And she?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought she was gone.””

Ava looked confused.

“What happened?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“The night I escaped…”

She stopped.

Her voice broke.

“Someone took Ava.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked away.

I noticed.

And that scared me.

Because innocent people usually look angry when accused.

Guilty people often look quiet.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“Where was Ava?””

He didn’t answer.

“Where was my daughter?””

Daniel smiled faintly.

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

He slowly looked toward the hidden wall.

“The question you should ask is…”

He paused.

“Who else did Claire hide from you?””

Claire suddenly went pale.

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“What is he talking about?””

Daniel took one step closer.

“Ethan, your wife didn’t just hide Ava.””

He pointed toward the closet.

“She hid the reason Ava was brought back.””

The room went cold.

Ava looked at Claire.

“Mommy…”

My wife started crying.

Daniel whispered:

“Ask her about the other child.””

I felt my entire body freeze.

“Other child?””

Claire covered her mouth.

And for the first time that night…

She looked more afraid of the truth than of Daniel.

Then Lily appeared in the doorway.

Her small voice trembled.

“Daddy…”

I turned around.

She was holding something in her hand.

Another photograph.

“Why does this picture have me in it?””

May you like

My blood ran cold.

Because Lily wasn’t even born when the photograph was taken.
