Chapter 3: The Name Hidden In The Dark
The voice coming from inside the wall wasn’t loud.
It didn’t need to be.
A whisper from that darkness was enough to make every hair on my arms stand up.
“Ethan…”
I tightened my grip on the flashlight.
The beam shook as it moved deeper into the hidden space.
“Who’s there?””
Nobody answered.
The little girl beside me grabbed my hand.
Her fingers were freezing cold.
“Daddy, don’t go closer.””
I looked down at her.
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Because he gets angry when people find him.””
My stomach twisted.
“Who gets angry?””
Before she could answer, Claire stepped between me and the opening.
“Ethan, we need to leave.””
I stared at her.
“Leave?””
My voice cracked.
“There is another person inside our wall, Claire.””
She wiped her tears quickly.
“You don’t understand what you’re seeing.””
“Then make me understand.””
She looked at the little girl.
And the expression on her face broke something inside me.
It wasn’t just fear.
It was guilt.
Deep, painful guilt.
“Her name is Ava,” Claire whispered.
The girl inside the wall looked at me.
“My name is Ava.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Claire…”
She closed her eyes.
“Her name wasn’t supposed to be known.””
The words made my anger rise.
“Not supposed to be known?””
I stepped closer.
“She’s a child.””
Claire flinched.
“I know.””
“No. You don’t.””
My voice became louder.
“You left her in there.””
“I didn’t.””
“Then who did?””
Silence.
The only sound was Ava’s quiet breathing.
I looked at the hidden space.
It was barely large enough for a child to crawl through. There was a thin blanket in the corner. Empty cups. Old food containers.
Someone had been living there.
Not for a day.
Not for a week.
For a long time.
I turned back to Claire.
“How long?””
Her lips trembled.
“Ethan…”
“How long has she been here?””
Ava answered before Claire could.
“Three months.””
The room went completely silent.
Three months.
My daughter had known.
My wife had known.
And nobody told me.
I felt something break inside my chest.
I walked toward Claire.
“You watched me sit at the dinner table every night.””
She started crying.
“You watched me kiss Lily goodnight.””
“I know.””
“You watched me live my life while a child was trapped inside my house.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Claire covered her face.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She didn’t answer.
I looked at Ava.
“What happened to you?””
The little girl looked down.
“Mommy told me to stay quiet.””
My jaw tightened.
“Why?””
“She said if anyone found out I was alive, he would come back.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Ava looked toward the darkness.
Then whispered:
“Mr. Cole.””
I turned toward Claire.
Her face went pale.
“You know that name?””
She didn’t respond.
“Claire.””
She finally nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Her hands shook.
“He was the man who helped me when Ava was born.””
I stared at her.
“When Ava was born?””
Claire sat down slowly.
“I need to tell you something.””
I didn’t move.
“Start talking.””
She looked at Ava.
Then at me.
“Before Lily…”
The room seemed to freeze.
“Before you and I met…”
My heartbeat became louder.
“Claire…”
She took a deep breath.
“I had another daughter.””
I looked at Ava.
The birthmark.
The photograph.
Everything suddenly connected.
But there was still one question.
“Why did you tell everyone she was gone?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I thought she was.””
Ava shook her head.
“No.””
Claire looked at her.
The little girl’s voice became stronger.
“You knew.””
My wife froze.
“You knew I was there.””
Ava stepped out from the hidden space.
Her legs shook, but she stood.
“You came back.””
Claire looked like she had been punched.
“What?””
Ava’s eyes filled with tears.
“You came back three months ago.””
I looked at Claire.
“What is she talking about?””
My wife couldn’t speak.
Ava continued.
“You brought blankets.””
Claire whispered:
“Ava…”
“You told me to stay hidden.””
The room became unbearable.
I looked at my wife.
“Is this true?””
Claire looked away.
That was my answer.
I felt betrayed in a way I couldn’t explain.
Not just because she hid Ava.
Because she looked me in the eyes every day while carrying this secret.
“Why would you do that?””
Claire finally broke.
“Because I was trying to keep her alive.””
I stared at her.
“From who?””
She looked toward the hallway.
Then lowered her voice.
“From the man who knows she survived.””
A strange sound came from outside Lily’s bedroom.
A floorboard creaking.
All three of us froze.
Claire’s face changed.
Not sadness.
Pure terror.
“No.””
I turned.
“What?””
She grabbed my arm.
“Ethan, we have to go.””
The bedroom door slowly moved.
Someone was standing on the other side.
The handle began to turn.
May you like
Ava whispered:
“He found us.””
