Chapter 2: The Child Who Shouldn’t Exist

I don’t remember falling to my knees.

One second I was standing there with the flashlight in my hand.

The next, I was staring into the darkest corner of my house, looking at a child who looked like she had been forgotten by the world.

She was tiny.

Maybe seven years old.

Her clothes were dirty and oversized, like they belonged to someone else. Her hair was tangled, her face covered with dust, and her eyes were filled with the kind of fear no child should ever have.

She pressed herself against the wall, trembling.

But she wasn’t looking at me like I was a stranger.

She was looking at me like she had been waiting for me.

“Daddy…”

The word came out as a broken whisper.

Behind me, Claire started sobbing.

“No…”

I turned slowly.

My wife covered her mouth with both hands.

She looked like she had just watched her entire life collapse.

“Claire,” I said quietly.

My voice barely sounded like mine.

“Who is this girl?””

She didn’t answer.

The child inside the wall slowly crawled forward.

I extended my hand.

“It’s okay. I’m not going to hurt you.””

She stared at my face.

Then at my hand.

Finally, she reached out.

Her fingers touched mine.

And that was when I noticed it.

A small brown mark on her wrist.

A birthmark.

The exact same shape as mine.

I pulled my sleeve back.

My own birthmark was there.

The same unusual pattern I had carried since birth.

My heart started pounding.

“No…”

The girl looked at my arm.

Then smiled faintly through her tears.

“Mommy said you would never find me.””

Everything inside me stopped.

“Mommy?””

The child nodded.

“She said Daddy didn’t need another girl.””

I felt like the room was spinning.

Claire immediately stepped forward.

“Ethan, please let me explain.””

I stood up.

“Explain what?””

My voice shook.

“Explain why there is a child living inside our wall?””

Claire cried harder.

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

“Protect us?””

I pointed toward the hidden space.

“She was eating food through a hole in the wall!””

The little girl flinched.

I instantly lowered my voice.

“Hey. It’s okay.””

I looked back at Claire.

“Who is she?””

My wife closed her eyes.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then the girl reached into the darkness behind her.

She pulled out something wrapped in an old cloth.

A photograph.

She held it tightly against her chest.

“I kept this because she said you would forget.””

My hands started shaking.

“Forget what?””

The girl slowly handed me the picture.

The moment I saw it, I felt the blood drain from my face.

It was Claire.

Years younger.

Holding a baby.

Standing beside another man.

But that wasn’t what destroyed me.

The baby in her arms had the same birthmark.

The same one.

Claire saw the photograph in my hand and collapsed into a chair.

“Ethan…”

I looked at her.

“Who is that baby?””

She couldn’t answer.

“Claire.””

My voice became sharper.

“Who is that child?””

The girl inside the wall whispered:

“She’s my mommy.””

I looked back at her.

Then at Claire.

“No.””

My mind refused to accept it.

Claire covered her face.

“I thought she was gone.””

Those words made the room go silent.

“What did you just say?””

She looked up.

Her face was broken.

“I thought she was gone.””

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Claire’s lips trembled.

“The baby.””

The little girl hugged herself.

“I’m not a baby anymore.””

My chest tightened.

I looked between them.

There was a story here.

A terrible one.

A story my wife had buried for years.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Claire shook her head.

“I can’t.””

“You can.””

“No, Ethan.””

She looked toward the closet.

Her expression changed from fear to something worse.

Desperation.

“Because if she knows you found her…”

I froze.

“Who?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Then we heard something.

A sound from inside the hidden space.

A second movement.

Not the little girl.

Someone else.

The flashlight slipped slightly in my hand.

I aimed it deeper into the darkness.

At first, I saw nothing.

Then a pair of eyes appeared.

Someone was hiding farther back.

Someone who had been listening the entire time.

The child grabbed my arm.

Her voice shook.

“Daddy…”

I looked down.

“What?””

She pointed into the darkness.

“That’s the person Mommy told me never to talk about.””

May you like

And from behind the wall, a voice whispered my name.

“Ethan…”
