Chapter 7: The Witness Daniel Feared
Nobody spoke after the voice on the phone revealed who they were.
Daniel stood frozen.
The phone remained pressed against his ear, but his hand had started shaking.
The man who had acted untouchable ten minutes earlier looked like someone who had just watched a door open to a room he thought was locked forever.
Maya noticed.
She noticed everything.
The way Daniel’s eyes avoided hers.
The way his shoulders tightened.
The way he looked at Caroline like he was silently begging her to make this disappear.
But Caroline didn’t move.
She only whispered:
“Put it on speaker.””
Daniel looked at her.
“No.””
“Put it on speaker.””
His face hardened.
“This is private.””
The woman in the navy suit stepped closer.
“Daniel, given the circumstances, I think everyone here deserves to hear the truth.””
Daniel looked around.
The crowd.
The witnesses.
The security officers watching from a distance.
There was nowhere left to hide.
Slowly, he pressed the speaker button.
A man’s voice filled the space between us.
“Is this Daniel Whitmore?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.””
The voice was older.
Calm.
Certain.
“I’m Thomas Reed.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Like that name alone was enough to hurt him.
Maya noticed.
“You know him.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Caroline did.
“He worked with your sister.””
Maya looked at her.
“What?””
Thomas continued through the phone.
“Daniel, I thought I would never have to speak to you again.””
Daniel’s voice was low.
“You should not be calling me.””
A pause.
Then Thomas replied:
“That’s exactly what you said seven years ago.””
Maya’s heart raced.
She stepped closer.
“Who is this man?””
Thomas heard her.
“You must be Maya.””
Her breath caught.
“How do you know my name?””
“Because Elena talked about you every day.””
Maya looked down.
Hearing her sister’s name from another person felt like opening an old wound.
Thomas continued.
“She loved you more than anything.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Thomas, stop.””
“No.””
The firmness in Thomas’s voice silenced him.
“Seven years ago, Elena discovered what Daniel was doing.””
Maya looked at Daniel.
“What was he doing?””
Daniel immediately answered.
“Nothing illegal.””
Thomas laughed quietly.
“That’s exactly how you always phrased it.””
Daniel’s face turned red.
“Careful.””
The woman in the navy suit noticed.
“Is that a threat?””
Daniel looked away.
Thomas continued.
“Daniel was moving company funds through fake accounts.””
Maya felt her stomach tighten.
The airport suddenly felt too bright.
Too loud.
She looked at the man who had shoved her aside moments earlier.
The same man who had told her she was in his way.
Now she was hearing he had spent years hiding something much bigger.
Caroline quietly said:
“Tell her about Elena’s last week.””
Daniel looked at his wife.
“Don’t.””
Maya turned.
“Last week?””
Caroline looked at her.
“She was scared.””
Maya shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became smaller.
“She never told me.””
“She didn’t want you involved.””
Thomas spoke again.
“She called me three days before she died.””
Daniel looked down.
Maya noticed.
“You knew she called him?””
Silence.
That silence was enough.
“You knew.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“I knew she was investigating.””
Maya stared.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
Daniel looked at her.
“I was trying to protect you.””
The words sounded wrong.
Everyone knew it.
Maya’s expression hardened.
“Protect me?””
She stepped closer.
“You let me believe my sister died in an accident.””
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“I didn’t kill her.””
Nobody accused him of that.
But his response said more than anyone expected.
Maya went still.
Because innocent people usually said, “I had nothing to do with this.””
Daniel had chosen different words.
The woman in the navy suit noticed too.
“Thomas, what evidence do you have?””
A pause.
Then:
“The original files Elena copied.””
Daniel immediately looked up.
“What?””
Thomas continued.
“I kept them.””
Maya whispered:
“Where?””
Thomas answered:
“Somewhere Daniel couldn’t reach.””
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Thomas laughed.
“I understand perfectly.””
Daniel’s voice became sharper.
“You could destroy lives.””
“No.””
Thomas replied.
“You destroyed them years ago.””
The line went silent.
Then Thomas said:
“I’m sending the files now.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Don’t.””
Nobody expected that word.
Not from him.
Not with that desperation.
Maya looked at him.
“Why are you afraid?””
Daniel stared at her.
For a moment, he looked like he wanted to tell the truth.
Then his phone buzzed.
A notification appeared.
Thomas had sent something.
The woman in the navy suit checked her own phone.
A few seconds later, she looked up.
Her expression had changed.
“What is it?”” Caroline asked.
The woman didn’t answer immediately.
She looked directly at Daniel.
Then at Maya.
“It’s a video.””
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
Maya felt cold.
“A video of what?””
The woman turned her screen around.
A timestamp appeared.
Seven years earlier.
The night Elena died.
Daniel looked at the video.
And for the first time since this began, he looked completely terrified.
May you like
Because whatever was recorded…
He knew exactly what everyone was about to see.
