Chapter 3: The Video Nobody Could Erase

Daniel stood in the middle of the airport terminal with his phone pressed against his ear, but he looked like he had forgotten how to speak.

The confidence was gone.

The impatience was gone.

Even the irritation that had filled his voice minutes earlier had disappeared.

All that remained was panic.

I watched his eyes move from the phone to the woman in the navy suit, then to the pregnant woman in the green dress.

He looked like he was trying to figure out how a simple airport encounter had turned into a disaster.

The answer was obvious.

He had underestimated the wrong people.

“Mr. Whitmore?”” the voice on the phone asked.

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.””

“This is Jonathan Hale.””

His face tightened.

Everyone nearby recognized the name from Daniel’s reaction alone.

The woman in the navy suit crossed her arms.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Mr. Hale, I can explain.””

A pause.

Then the voice on the other end replied, “Explain what?””

Daniel looked around.

“I think there’s been some kind of misunderstanding.””

The pregnant woman looked away.

I noticed something about her then.

She wasn’t enjoying this.

She wasn’t smiling because someone powerful had finally challenged him.

She just looked tired.

Like she had dealt with people like Daniel before.

Jonathan’s voice continued through the phone.

“We received a report from airport security.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“Security?””

“Yes.””

“That’s ridiculous. It was just a disagreement.””

The woman in the navy suit raised an eyebrow.

“A disagreement?””

Daniel heard her.

His face turned red.

“Ms. Carter, please.””

But she didn’t respond.

Jonathan continued.

“Daniel, our company has spent six months reviewing your leadership behavior.””

Daniel froze.

The terminal noise seemed to fade around us.

Six months.

That wasn’t about the airport.

This was bigger.

“You’re misunderstanding,” Daniel said quickly.

“No,” Jonathan replied.

“We’re not.””

Daniel’s grip tightened around his phone.

“I’ve delivered every project on schedule.””

“You have.””

Daniel seemed relieved for half a second.

Then Jonathan continued.

“But that does not excuse how you treat people.””

Daniel looked down.

The woman in the navy suit opened her folder again.

Inside were several pages.

She didn’t show them to anyone.

She didn’t need to.

Daniel already knew what they were.

“Who sent you that footage?”” he asked.

The woman looked at him.

“I did.””

His eyes widened.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I saw what happened.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were behind me.””

“I was.””

“And you recorded me?””

“No.””

She closed the folder.

“The airport did.””

Daniel’s face changed.

The security cameras.

The witnesses.

The people standing in line.

Everything he thought nobody would remember had been captured.

The pregnant woman finally spoke.

“My name is Maya.””

Daniel looked at her.

She continued.

“I want you to understand something.””

Her voice was quiet.

“That suitcase hurt my foot.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“But your words hurt more.””

The people around us became even quieter.

Maya looked down briefly.

“I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to create a scene.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“But you did anyway.””

That sentence landed harder than any accusation.

Daniel looked away.

The woman in the navy suit watched him carefully.

“Daniel, do you know why Jonathan called me?””

He didn’t answer.

“Because I’m the person responsible for reviewing your contract.””

His eyes snapped back to her.

“You’re the compliance director.””

“Yes.””

The realization hit him.

The woman he had ignored.

The person he had treated like a stranger.

The person standing behind him had been the person who could determine his future at the company.

But she didn’t look satisfied.

She looked disappointed.

“I was supposed to meet with you tomorrow about several complaints.””

Daniel laughed nervously.

“Complaints?””

“Yes.””

“From who?””

She looked at him.

“People who work with you.””

His face hardened.

“They’re exaggerating.””

“Are they?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The woman continued.

“One employee said you humiliated her in front of a client.””

Daniel looked away.

“Another said you refused to listen when someone raised concerns.””

His expression became defensive.

“This is ridiculous.””

“And today,” she said, “you rolled your suitcase over a pregnant woman’s foot, refused to apologize, and told her to move because you were more important.””

Daniel’s face went blank.

The words sounded different when someone else repeated them.

Not as an argument.

As a record.

Maya adjusted her bag.

“I don’t want him fired because of me.””

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel looked surprised.

The woman in the navy suit did too.

Maya continued.

“I don’t know him. I don’t know his company. I don’t know his job.””

She took a breath.

“But people should not need power before they deserve respect.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked at her.

And for the first time, he seemed ashamed.

But then his phone buzzed again.

He glanced down.

His expression changed.

“What?””

The woman in the navy suit noticed.

“What happened?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He stared at the screen.

Then slowly turned the phone around.

A message had appeared.

From his assistant.

*Emergency meeting moved to today. The board has requested your presence before you board your flight.*

Daniel looked up.

“They’re waiting for me.””

The woman nodded.

“Yes.””

He stared at her.

“You knew.””

“I suspected.””

Daniel looked between her and Maya.

Then he whispered:

“You set this up.””

Maya frowned.

“What?””

Daniel stepped backward.

His fear turned into anger.

“This wasn’t random.””

The terminal suddenly felt colder.

Because Daniel had just made a decision.

Instead of accepting what happened…

May you like

He was looking for someone to blame.

And the person he chose was Maya.
