Chapter 2: The Name On The Folder

Daniel’s confidence vanished the moment he heard her voice.

That was the part nobody expected.

Five minutes earlier, he had been acting like the airport belonged to him.

Now he was standing completely still, staring at the woman behind him like he had seen a ghost.

The woman in the navy suit didn’t raise her voice.

She didn’t need to.

“Interesting way to spend your morning, Daniel.””

His mouth opened.

Closed.

Then opened again.

“Ms. Carter, I think there’s been a misunderstanding.””

The woman glanced at the pregnant passenger.

“I don’t think there has.””

Daniel swallowed.

People around us were pretending not to listen.

Nobody was successful.

The pregnant woman stepped slightly back, still holding her stomach.

I moved closer to her.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

“Yes. I’m okay.””

Her voice was calm, but her eyes stayed on Daniel.

The woman in the navy suit looked at him.

“Did you apologize?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I was just trying to get through the line.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

Silence.

The airport announcement echoed overhead.

“Final boarding call…”

Nobody moved.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“This really doesn’t need to become a situation.””

The woman tilted her head.

“You made it a situation when you decided another person’s discomfort mattered less than your schedule.””

His face tightened.

“I don’t know what she told you.””

The pregnant woman immediately looked offended.

“I didn’t tell her anything.””

The woman in the navy suit nodded.

“I know.””

Then she looked at Daniel.

“That’s the problem.””

Daniel’s fingers tightened around his suitcase handle.

I noticed something strange.

He wasn’t angry anymore.

He was nervous.

Very nervous.

“Ms. Carter, can we talk privately?””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

His face changed.

“Excuse me?””

“You wanted everyone to hear you tell a pregnant woman to move because you were more important.””

She glanced around the crowded terminal.

“So everyone can hear this too.””

Daniel looked around.

For the first time, he noticed the audience.

The people who had watched him ignore her.

The people who had heard every word.

The people who now saw him differently.

The woman in the navy suit opened her leather folder.

Daniel’s eyes dropped to it.

And immediately, he stepped forward.

“Wait.””

That single word changed everything.

The woman stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked at the folder.

“You brought that here?””

“Yes.””

His expression became almost desperate.

The pregnant woman looked between them.

“What’s in that folder?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The woman in the navy suit did.

“Everything I need for our meeting tomorrow.””

Daniel went pale.

“Tomorrow’s meeting?””

“Yes.””

She closed the folder.

“The one where your position at Carter & Hayes was going to be discussed.””

A few people nearby exchanged looks.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“You wouldn’t.””

The woman stared at him.

“I absolutely would.””

He stepped closer.

“You’re letting this happen because of an airport argument?””

“No.””

She looked at the pregnant woman.

“I’m letting this happen because your behavior showed exactly what kind of person you are when you think nobody important is watching.””

Daniel looked furious.

“I made a mistake.””

The pregnant woman finally spoke.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She continued quietly.

“You made a choice.””

Daniel stared at her.

For a moment, nobody said anything.

Then his phone rang.

He glanced down.

The name on the screen made his face change again.

The woman in the navy suit noticed.

“Answer it.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because I think you should hear what they have to say.””

His hand slowly moved toward the phone.

He answered.

“Hello?””

The color drained from his face as he listened.

“What?””

Another pause.

“No, that’s not possible.””

The woman beside him watched carefully.

Daniel’s voice became smaller.

“Who reported it?””

Nobody in the line moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then Daniel looked up.

His eyes landed on the pregnant woman.

And for the first time since he entered the terminal, he looked afraid.

Because the person who had just reported his behavior wasn’t the executive behind him.

It wasn’t the airport staff.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone he never expected to be watching.

His own company’s largest client was on the phone.

And they had just seen the security footage.
