Chapter 6: The Secret Daniel Buried
Daniel tried to leave.
That was the first thing he did.
Not apologize.
Not explain.
Leave.
He grabbed his suitcase handle and turned toward the security checkpoint.
The woman in the navy suit immediately stepped in front of him.
“Where are you going?””
“I have a flight.””
She looked at him.
“You think you’re boarding that plane?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I have somewhere to be.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“The board meeting.””
He looked relieved.
Then she continued.
“And the investigation.””
The relief disappeared.
Daniel looked around.
For the first time, he realized there was no easy escape.
Every direction led back to the same problem.
The truth.
Maya stood beside Caroline, still trying to process everything.
“My sister worked with you?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“I didn’t know her well.””
Caroline immediately spoke.
“That’s not true.””
Daniel looked at his wife.
“Caroline.””
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“You don’t get to rewrite history now.””
Maya looked at Caroline.
“Tell me everything.””
Caroline took a deep breath.
“Your sister’s name was Elena.””
Maya closed her eyes.
Hearing her sister’s name from a stranger hurt more than she expected.
“She was smart,” Caroline continued.
“She noticed things other people ignored.””
Daniel looked away.
Caroline continued.
“She found financial reports that didn’t match.””
Maya looked at Daniel.
“And he was involved?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Caroline looked at him.
“You told me that seven years ago too.””
His face tightened.
Maya noticed.
“You knew.””
Caroline nodded.
“I suspected.””
The confession shocked Maya.
“You suspected my sister was telling the truth and you said nothing?””
Caroline looked devastated.
“I was afraid.””
The honesty made Maya pause.
“Afraid of what?””
Caroline looked at Daniel.
“Of him.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“That’s ridiculous.””
But nobody believed him.
Caroline continued.
“When Elena confronted Daniel, she told me she had copied everything.””
Maya looked at the envelope.
“The proof?””
Caroline nodded.
“She gave me a copy.””
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
“Where is the original?””
Everyone turned.
That question revealed everything.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Caroline looked at him.
“You remember.””
Daniel stopped.
Maya stared at him.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Her voice broke.
“You knew my sister had evidence.””
Daniel looked trapped.
“I knew she was making accusations.””
“Then why are you afraid of what’s in that envelope?””
He had no answer.
Caroline slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a small flash drive and a handwritten letter.
Maya stared.
“My sister wrote that?””
“Yes.””
She reached out.
Her hand trembled.
But before she touched it, Daniel spoke.
“Maya, wait.””
She looked at him.
“What?””
“I can explain.””
She laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because she couldn’t believe those were the words he chose.
“You had seven years to explain.””
Daniel looked desperate.
“I was young.””
“You were thirty-eight.””
“I made mistakes.””
Maya looked at him.
“Your mistake was not stealing money.””
Daniel froze.
Everyone watched.
“Your mistake was thinking nobody mattered except you.””
The woman in the navy suit quietly recorded notes.
Daniel noticed.
“You’re still taking notes?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at him.
“Because every time you’re given a chance to take responsibility, you choose something else.””
Daniel looked at Maya.
“I didn’t hurt your sister.””
Maya’s expression changed.
A small crack appeared.
Because that was the first thing he had said that sounded like a defense instead of an excuse.
Caroline looked at him carefully.
“Then tell her what happened that night.””
Daniel went silent.
Maya looked between them.
“What night?””
Nobody answered.
The airport announcement played again.
But this time, nobody cared.
Maya stepped closer.
“What happened the night my sister died?””
Daniel’s face became unreadable.
Then his phone rang.
He looked down.
A number he didn’t recognize.
He almost ignored it.
Almost.
Then Caroline saw the number.
And her face changed.
“Answer it.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because that number belongs to the person who can prove what happened.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
Maya held her breath.
The woman in the navy suit leaned closer.
Daniel slowly answered.
“Hello?””
A voice spoke.
And within seconds, Daniel’s entire expression changed.
Because the person on the other end said one sentence.
A sentence that made Maya’s heart stop.
“I was there the night Elena died.””
Daniel looked at Maya.
And whispered:
“No…”
May you like
The voice continued.
“And I have the evidence you never found.””
