Chapter 5: The Photograph From The Past
Maya stared at the phone screen like she was looking at a memory she had buried years ago.
For several seconds, she didn’t say anything.
The airport continued moving around us.
People dragged suitcases.
Children cried.
Announcements echoed overhead.
But Maya stood completely still.
Because the photo on Daniel’s phone had pulled her into another time.
A time she clearly didn’t want to revisit.
I looked at the screen from where I stood.
It showed Maya younger.
Much younger.
She wasn’t pregnant.
She wasn’t standing in an airport.
She was sitting on the steps of a small house with another woman beside her.
The other woman looked familiar.
Not because I knew her.
Because Maya’s expression changed the moment she saw her.
“You know her,” Daniel said.
Maya slowly lifted her eyes.
“Yes.””
The woman in the navy suit looked between them.
“Who is she?””
Maya didn’t answer immediately.
She looked down.
Then she whispered:
“My sister.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Your sister?””
Maya nodded.
“She passed away.””
The words instantly changed the mood.
Even Daniel looked uncomfortable.
The anger disappeared for a moment.
But only for a moment.
Because Daniel still wanted an explanation.
“Then why does my wife have this picture?””
Maya looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“It doesn’t.””
The woman in the navy suit stepped closer.
“Daniel, what exactly did your wife tell you?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation said more than his answer.
“She said she needed to speak with Maya.””
Maya’s eyes narrowed.
“She knows my name?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
That was the answer.
The woman in the navy suit noticed too.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“My wife said the woman in this photo helped her years ago.””
Maya looked confused.
“Helped her?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Before we met.””
Maya studied him.
“Then why did she never mention me?””
He had no answer.
And for the first time, Daniel looked like someone who wasn’t just afraid of losing his job.
He looked afraid of what his own wife might reveal.
A few minutes later, a woman rushed through the terminal.
She was wearing a cream-colored coat, her hair pulled back neatly, her face tense.
The moment she saw Daniel, she walked faster.
“Where is she?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Caroline.””
His wife ignored him.
Her eyes searched the crowd.
Then they landed on Maya.
Everything stopped.
Caroline Whitmore looked at Maya like she had been searching for her for years.
“Maya?””
Maya didn’t move.
“How do you know my name?””
Caroline’s eyes filled with emotion.
“I can’t believe it’s you.””
Maya took a small step back.
“I asked you a question.””
Caroline stopped.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“Did you tell her?””
“No.””
“Good.””
Daniel frowned.
“Good?””
Caroline turned back to Maya.
“I didn’t know if I would ever find you.””
Maya’s voice became colder.
“Why were you looking for me?””
Caroline reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Not a document.
Not something official.
Something personal.
“I have something that belongs to you.””
Maya stared at it.
“What is it?””
Caroline held the envelope tightly.
“Something your sister left behind.””
Maya’s face changed.
“My sister?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Caroline, what is this?””
She ignored him.
“Maya, your sister asked me to keep this safe.””
Maya’s eyes filled with disbelief.
“My sister died seven years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you only giving it to me now?””
Caroline looked down.
And that silence answered before she did.
“I tried.””
Maya shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You don’t get to say that.””
People nearby were starting to watch again.
But nobody moved away.
Nobody wanted to miss what came next.
Maya stepped closer.
“My sister was my best friend.””
Caroline nodded.
“I know.””
“You knew her?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Caroline looked at Daniel.
Then back at Maya.
“She worked for my family.””
Daniel suddenly stiffened.
“What?””
Caroline continued.
“Years ago, before I married you, my father owned a company. Your sister worked there.””
Maya stared.
“She never told me.””
“She wanted to protect you.””
The words hit Maya harder than anything else.
“Protect me from what?””
Caroline looked at Daniel.
And Daniel immediately looked away.
Maya noticed.
Her eyes moved between them.
“No.””
Nobody spoke.
Maya’s voice became quieter.
“What does Daniel have to do with my sister?””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“Nothing.””
Caroline looked at him.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“Don’t.””
The fear in his voice was obvious.
Maya noticed too.
“Tell me.””
Caroline closed her eyes.
Then she opened them.
“Your sister discovered something.””
“What?””
Caroline held the envelope tighter.
“She discovered that Daniel was taking money from the company.””
The terminal went silent.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“That’s a lie.””
Maya stared at him.
Caroline didn’t react.
“Your sister found records.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Stop.””
“She reported it.””
“Stop.””
“She was told to stay quiet.””
Maya’s breathing became uneven.
“My sister died in an accident.””
Caroline looked at her.
“I know.””
Maya’s voice shook.
“Are you saying…”
She couldn’t finish.
Caroline looked down.
“I’m saying your sister never believed it was an accident.””
Daniel’s expression changed completely.
Because he knew exactly what Caroline was talking about.
And Maya saw it.
She saw the fear.
She saw the guilt.
She saw the one thing he had tried to hide.
The envelope in Caroline’s hand suddenly felt heavier.
“What’s inside?”” Maya asked.
Caroline looked at her.
“Proof.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.””
Maya turned.
“No?””
Daniel looked desperate.
“Maya, you don’t understand.””
She stared at him.
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
May you like
Because the truth he had avoided for years was finally standing in front of him.
And it had Maya’s face.
