Chapter 4: The Woman He Tried To Silence
Daniel followed us away from the boarding lane.
Not quickly.
Not aggressively.
But with the kind of determination that made me uncomfortable.
Maya noticed too.
She stopped walking.
“Are you following me?””
Daniel forced a smile.
“No.””
The lie was immediate.
Maya looked at him.
“Then why did you stop?””
He glanced around.
People were still watching.
His reputation was falling apart in real time.
And he hated that.
“I just want to understand what’s happening.””
Maya shook her head.
“You already understand.””
“No, I don’t.””
His voice became sharper.
“You were staring at Ms. Carter before she even turned around.””
The woman in the navy suit stepped between them.
“Daniel.””
He ignored her.
“You knew who she was.””
Maya’s expression changed.
Not fear.
Confusion.
“I didn’t.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“That’s too convenient.””
I stepped forward.
“Enough.””
He looked at me.
“You don’t know anything about this.””
“Actually, I saw everything.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You saw a pregnant woman standing in a line.””
“Yes.””
“And you decided I was the villain.””
Nobody answered.
Because he had done that himself.
The woman in the navy suit looked at him.
“This is exactly what we’re talking about.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“What?””
“You are more concerned with defending yourself than understanding what happened.””
He shook his head.
“You’re judging me over one mistake.””
She looked at him.
“No.””
She pointed toward the folder.
“I’m reviewing a pattern.””
That word bothered him.
Pattern.
He hated that it suggested this wasn’t one bad moment.
It was who he had become.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Can we please not do this here?””
The woman nodded.
“Fine.””
For a moment, he relaxed.
Then she continued.
“We’ll do it in front of the board.””
His expression collapsed.
“You’re serious?””
“Yes.””
He looked at Maya.
Then back at her.
“I could lose my job.””
Maya’s face softened slightly.
“That’s not because I spoke.””
Daniel stared at her.
“It is.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“It’s because you decided someone like me didn’t deserve an apology.””
That stopped him.
For a second, the old Daniel disappeared.
The arrogant man.
The impatient man.
The man who thought his time mattered more than everyone else’s.
For a second, he looked like someone realizing the damage he had caused.
Then his phone rang.
Again.
This time, he looked terrified before answering.
He picked up.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
His face changed.
“What do you mean she’s there?””
The woman in the navy suit looked at him.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
He listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
“She’s coming here.””
Nobody moved.
“Who is coming?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at Maya.
His expression was impossible to read.
Fear.
Shock.
Confusion.
All mixed together.
The woman in the navy suit stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
He finally spoke.
“My wife.””
The terminal went silent around us.
Maya looked confused.
“Why would your wife be coming here?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed fixed on Maya.
Then he said something that made everyone freeze.
“She said she needs to talk to the woman in the green dress.””
Maya’s hand moved protectively over her stomach.
“Why?””
Daniel looked down.
Because whatever was happening was bigger than an airport argument.
Much bigger.
His voice dropped.
“Because she says she knows you.””
Maya stared at him.
“I’ve never met your wife.””
Daniel looked terrified.
“Then why did she just send me a photo of you?””
He unlocked his phone.
Turned the screen around.
And Maya’s entire face changed.
Because the photo wasn’t from today.
It was taken years ago.
May you like
And standing beside Maya in that picture was someone Daniel’s wife had every reason to know.
Someone connected to the secret Daniel had been hiding.
