Chapter 9: The Father Behind the Lie
Nobody moved.
Not Daniel.
Not Thomas.
Not my father.
Not even Richard.
The entire room seemed frozen around one impossible sentence.
*He was your father.*
Daniel stared at Grace like he had forgotten how to breathe.
“No.””
Grace’s eyes filled with sadness.
“I wish it wasn’t true.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You told me my father died.””
“I told you the man who raised you died.””
The difference hit the room like a storm.
Daniel stepped back.
“My whole life…”
Grace nodded slowly.
“Was built on a lie.””
I watched the man I once planned to marry fall apart in front of me.
For the first time since I met Daniel, he looked completely lost.
Not calculated.
Not controlled.
Just broken.
Thomas looked at Grace.
“You knew?””
She turned toward him.
“I found out years ago.””
“And you never told me?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
His voice cracked.
“But everyone keeps making choices for me.””
Grace looked down.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She glanced at Richard.
“Of him.””
Richard immediately stepped forward.
“This has gone far enough.””
Grace looked at him.
“No.””
Her voice was stronger now.
“Not this time.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
Thomas moved toward him.
“You knew she was alive.””
Richard said nothing.
That was the answer.
My father grabbed the table for support.
“Who was Daniel’s father?””
Grace looked at him.
“The man who started everything.””
Daniel whispered:
“Who?””
Grace looked at him.
“Robert Mercer.””
The name echoed.
I looked at Daniel.
“Your father?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I never knew him.””
Grace nodded.
“Because he made sure you didn’t.””
She took a breath.
“Robert Mercer wasn’t just a businessman. He built a network of people who specialized in taking control of companies through manipulation.””
My father’s face darkened.
“The same network that attacked my father’s company.””
“Yes.””
Thomas looked at Richard.
“And you worked for him.””
Richard didn’t deny it.
“I worked with him.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stared at him.
“You knew.””
Richard shrugged.
“I knew who your father was.””
“You knew he was alive?””
“No.””
Richard smiled slightly.
“But I knew he had a son.””
Daniel looked sick.
“Me.””
“Yes.””
Grace stepped closer.
“Robert knew Daniel existed. He just didn’t want him to inherit anything.””
“Why?””
“Because Robert believed his son was weak.””
Daniel laughed once.
A painful sound.
“So he abandoned me.””
Grace nodded.
“He gave you to another family. He created a fake identity for you. He wanted you invisible.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And you spent your whole life trying to find him.””
Daniel looked away.
“I thought if I found him, I would finally understand why he left.””
Grace’s expression softened.
“You found the wrong answers.””
Richard interrupted.
“And now everyone knows too much.””
The room changed.
Everyone felt it.
The conversation was over.
The truth had been revealed.
Now came the danger.
Richard reached into his coat.
Thomas immediately moved.
“Don’t.””
Richard stopped.
A small smile appeared.
“You still think you’re protecting people.””
My father looked at him.
“What do you want?””
Richard looked at me.
“The same thing everyone wanted.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“The trust.””
I shook my head.
“You spent years trying to control my family.””
“No.””
Richard smiled.
“I spent years trying to find what your grandfather hid.””
He looked at the silver key.
“And now Lily has it.””
Grace stepped forward.
“She doesn’t have the documents.””
Richard looked at her.
“But she knows where to find them.””
My father suddenly understood.
“The bank.””
Everyone turned.
Richard smiled.
“Exactly.””
My heart sank.
The key.
The letter.
The safety deposit box.
Everything had been leading here.
Daniel looked at me.
“Lily, listen to me.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know if I can trust you.””
His expression hurt.
“I know.””
A pause.
“But I need you to trust one thing.””
“What?””
“That Richard is running out of time.””
Richard’s smile faded.
Daniel continued.
“If he gets those documents, he can prove he has control over the company.””
My father looked confused.
“But why?””
Grace answered.
“Because the documents contain the only proof that Robert Mercer’s network illegally transferred ownership of multiple companies.””
Thomas looked at Richard.
“And if those documents become public…”
“Everything collapses.””
Richard’s face became cold.
“Unfortunately, none of you are leaving with those documents.””
The lights flickered.
Again.
But this time, nobody panicked.
Because everyone understood.
This wasn’t a surprise anymore.
It was the final move.
My phone vibrated.
A message.
From the bank.
I looked down.
My eyes widened.
“What?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What happened?””
I showed him the screen.
The message said:
*Your safety deposit box appointment has been confirmed.*
For tomorrow morning.
But beneath it was another line.
A line that made my blood run cold.
*Appointment requested by: Daniel Mercer.*
I slowly looked at Daniel.
He stared at the message.
“I didn’t schedule that.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Grace whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
She looked terrified.
“Because Daniel’s account was closed five years ago.””
The room went silent.
Richard smiled.
May you like
And for the first time that night, I realized something.
Maybe Daniel wasn’t the only person pretending to be someone else.
