Chapter 6: The Truth Daniel Couldn't Hide
The emergency lights turned on seconds later.
The room was different.
Everyone looked different.
The shadows made strangers out of people I thought I knew.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
Alone.
No fake parents.
No fake relatives.
No charming smile.
Just him.
For a moment, I saw the man I fell in love with.
The man who made me laugh.
The man who held me through my darkest days.
Then I remembered the wedding hall.
The documents.
The lies.
And the way he stayed silent when I asked if his family was real.
“Why are you here?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“Because if I don’t explain, they’ll tell you a version of the story that protects themselves.””
Richard shook his head.
“Still manipulating.””
Daniel ignored him.
“Lily, I never wanted this to happen.””
I almost laughed.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“You built an entire fake family.””
His eyes dropped.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
“Why?””
Daniel looked around the room.
At the ledger.
The key.
The people watching him.
Then back at me.
“Because I was trying to get close to your family.””
My chest tightened.
“So Thomas was right.””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“Then why should I listen to anything else you say?””
“Because I didn’t start this.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Of course you did.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You know that’s not true.””
I looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel took a breath.
“When I was a child, I was told my family was powerful.””
He laughed quietly.
“I believed it.””
He looked at me.
“I thought my father was building something.””
“Was he?””
“No.””
His voice became bitter.
“He was stealing from people.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel continued.
“When I found out what he was doing, I tried to leave.””
“And Grace?””
His face changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
“Grace tried to help me.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Then why did she disappear?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because she found out who was really controlling everything.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Careful.””
Daniel pointed at him.
“You’re the reason she disappeared.””
The room exploded.
Thomas grabbed Richard’s arm.
“What did he just say?””
Richard pulled away.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“Your sister discovered the truth about Richard.””
Thomas froze.
“No.””
“She found documents showing he was moving company assets through fake investment groups.””
Richard laughed.
“A desperate man blaming others.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You threatened her.””
Thomas looked at Richard.
“Is that true?””
Nobody answered.
The silence said enough.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
He looked broken.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That you would see me as part of them.””
I stared.
“You were.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
That answer hurt.
“But I also needed to stop them.””
I shook my head.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I expect you to believe the evidence.””
He pulled out his phone.
I immediately noticed the irony.
The same man who had lied about everything was now offering proof.
“I recorded conversations.””
Richard’s face changed.
Daniel continued.
“Between Richard and the people who paid for the fake family.””
My father stepped closer.
“You recorded them?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew they would betray me too.””
I stared.
“Who paid them?””
Daniel looked at Richard.
Then answered.
“Your father’s business partners.””
My father froze.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“The people inside your company.””
A terrible silence filled the room.
I looked at my father.
“Are there people trying to take the company?””
He didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Lily, your grandfather discovered someone inside the company was planning to transfer ownership.””
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation scared me.
“Tell me.””
He looked at my father.
Then back at me.
“The person who signed the first illegal transfer document…”
He stopped.
My heartbeat grew louder.
“Who?””
Daniel whispered:
“Your father.””
I couldn’t breathe.
My father looked away.
“No.””
The word came from me.
Not because I knew it was false.
Because I needed it to be.
Daniel looked devastated.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
I turned toward my father.
“Dad?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
And then Richard smiled.
A small, satisfied smile.
Because he knew something none of us understood yet.
My father finally spoke.
“I signed the document.””
The room went completely still.
“But I didn’t do it to steal from the family.””
I stared.
“Then why?””
My father looked at the key.
“The original ownership records weren’t hidden from Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“They were hidden from everyone.””
A cold wave moved through me.
“What are you saying?””
My father’s voice broke.
“I’m saying your grandfather left something out of his will.””
He reached for the ledger.
“And the person who inherited the company…”
He looked directly at me.
“Was never supposed to be me.””
Ava whispered:
“Then who was it?””
My father looked at the floor.
May you like
Then answered:
“You.””
