Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Door

The door opened before anyone could reach it.

For one terrifying second, nobody moved.

The room had become completely silent except for the sound of my own heartbeat.

A man stepped inside.

He was tall, wearing a dark suit, with gray hair neatly combed back. His expression was calm, almost polite.

Too polite.

My father immediately recognized him.

“Richard.””

The man smiled.

“Charles.””

My stomach tightened.

My father’s face had lost all color.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Richard looked around the room.

His eyes passed over Thomas.

Then Ava.

Then stopped on me.

“Lily Bennett.””

The way he said my name made my skin crawl.

Not like someone meeting me.

Like someone confirming information.

“You’ve caused quite a scene tonight,” he said.

I stepped back.

“Who are you?””

Richard smiled.

“I’m someone who has known your family for a very long time.””

Thomas moved in front of me.

“You’re one of them.””

Richard looked amused.

“One of who?””

“The people Daniel works with.””

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

A crack.

Then it was gone.

“I think emotions are making everyone here jump to conclusions.””

I looked at my father.

“Dad, who is he?””

My father didn’t answer.

That scared me.

More than anything else.

Because my father was always the person who had answers.

The person who fixed problems.

The person who told me everything would be okay.

But now he looked like someone who had been running from a ghost.

Richard adjusted his jacket.

“Lily, I understand tonight has been overwhelming.””

“You don’t understand anything about me.””

“I understand more than you think.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Did Daniel send you?””

Richard didn’t respond.

That was enough.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Where is Daniel?””

Richard looked at him.

“You’re still asking questions you already know the answers to.””

Thomas’s expression hardened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Daniel isn’t the person you should be worried about.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then who should I worry about?””

Richard looked at my father.

“Your father.””

The room froze.

I turned.

“What?””

Richard sighed.

“This family has been hiding secrets long before Daniel arrived.””

My father’s voice became sharp.

“Leave.””

Richard ignored him.

“You really didn’t tell her?””

“Richard.””

“You let her believe you were protecting her.””

My father stepped closer.

“You have no right.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“No right? Charles, your father died because he trusted the wrong person.””

My grandfather.

The words felt like a punch.

I looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard looked at me.

“Your grandfather knew Daniel’s family was interested in the company.””

Thomas interrupted.

“Not his family. His organization.””

Richard smiled.

“Good. At least someone understands.””

I stared.

“Then why did Daniel marry me?””

Richard walked closer.

“Because your grandfather made one mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“He thought hiding the trust would protect it.””

He looked directly at me.

“But he forgot the easiest way to control an inheritance.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Richard answered quietly.

“Control the person who receives it.””

Nobody spoke.

The meaning was clear.

Daniel didn’t need to steal the trust.

He needed me.

I felt sick.

The man I loved.

The man who held my hand when I cried.

The man who promised to build a future with me.

Had been studying my life like a business plan.

Richard reached into his pocket.

My father immediately moved.

“Don’t.””

Richard slowly removed a small envelope.

“I didn’t come here to hurt her.””

“Then why are you here?””

“To give Lily the truth.””

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“From you?””

Richard ignored him.

He handed me the envelope.

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

“Something your grandfather left behind.””

My father looked shocked.

“What?””

Richard glanced at him.

“You weren’t the only one who found documents after his death.””

My father stepped forward.

“You had access to his office.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Richard’s expression remained calm.

“Because I was his financial advisor.””

Thomas stared.

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“You didn’t know everything about your sister’s case, did you?””

Thomas went quiet.

I looked at him.

“What case?””

Richard opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

My heart stopped.

It was Daniel.

But younger.

Much younger.

Standing outside my grandfather’s company.

Beside him was a woman.

A woman I had never seen.

Thomas took the photo.

His face changed.

“No.””

“Who is she?”” I asked.

Thomas stared at the picture.

“That’s Grace.””

The room went silent.

Daniel’s first wife.

The woman who disappeared.

I looked at Richard.

“She was here?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two days before your grandfather died.””

My father looked furious.

“You knew?””

Richard didn’t deny it.

“I knew many things.””

“Then why didn’t you tell us?””

“Because your grandfather asked me not to.””

I froze.

“My grandfather?””

Richard nodded.

“He knew Grace had discovered the truth.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“What truth?””

Richard looked at me.

“The reason Daniel chose families connected to wealth.””

I swallowed.

“Why?””

Richard’s voice lowered.

“Because Daniel wasn’t looking for money.””

I frowned.

“What else is there?””

Richard looked at the silver key on the floor.

“He was looking for something your grandfather hid.””

My father bent down and picked up the key.

“What?””

Richard smiled.

“The original ownership records.””

My father froze.

I looked at him.

“Ownership records?””

Richard nodded.

“The company your family thinks belongs to them…”

He paused.

“Was never fully yours.””

The room went silent.

My father looked devastated.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Richard looked at the ledger.

“Your grandfather discovered that someone had manipulated the original transfer documents decades ago.””

I felt dizzy.

“Who?””

Richard looked at me.

“The person who benefited the most.””

My father whispered.

“No.””

Richard’s eyes moved toward him.

“Yes.””

The answer hung in the air.

And then I heard footsteps outside.

Different from before.

More than one person.

Richard looked toward the door.

“They’re here.””

Thomas immediately turned.

“Who?””

Richard didn’t answer.

He looked at me.

“Lily, if you want to survive this, you need to understand one thing.””

“What?””

“Daniel didn’t create a fake family to get close to your money.””

My heart raced.

“Then why?””

Richard’s expression became serious.

“He created a fake family because he needed you to trust a lie that was much bigger.””

The lights suddenly went out.

Someone screamed in the hallway.

And in the darkness, I heard a familiar voice.

“Lily.””

May you like

Daniel.

“I need you to listen to me.””
