Chapter 8: The Woman Who Came Back
Nobody spoke for almost a minute.
Then Thomas walked toward Daniel.
“You knew.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“You knew she was alive.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“No.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I didn’t know.””
Thomas grabbed his jacket.
“Then why did you look like you expected that call?””
My father stepped between them.
“Enough.””
But nobody listened.
My entire world had become a collection of impossible truths.
Fake families.
Hidden inheritances.
Missing people.
Secret documents.
A husband who lied.
A woman who disappeared and somehow called me from nowhere.
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
“I need everyone to stop.””
They all looked at me.
“I need one person to tell me the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Daniel.
“You.””
His expression changed.
“Lily.””
“No more half-truths.””
I stepped closer.
“No more protecting me.””
Daniel looked down.
Then nodded.
“Okay.””
He sat down slowly.
“When I met you, I knew who you were.””
My chest tightened.
“But I didn’t know about the trust.””
I stared.
“What?””
“I knew your last name. I knew your family owned a company. But I didn’t know your grandfather had chosen you.””
“Then what were you looking for?””
Daniel swallowed.
“The people who destroyed my family.””
He looked at Thomas.
“Grace and I discovered Richard’s involvement years ago.””
Richard immediately interrupted.
“This is absurd.””
Daniel continued.
“Your father’s company wasn’t the only one targeted. Several families were.””
My father looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because Richard created financial crises, then bought pieces of companies when they were vulnerable.””
Richard laughed.
“You have no proof.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I do.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small flash drive.
I almost laughed at the absurdity.
After everything tonight, a tiny piece of plastic felt like the answer to my entire life.
“What is that?””
“Everything.””
Richard’s expression changed.
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“Where did you get it?””
“Grace gave it to me.””
Thomas froze.
“When?””
“Before she disappeared.””
I stared.
“Then why did you let everyone believe she was gone?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“Because she wanted it that way.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“She wanted me to think she was dead?””
“She wanted everyone to think that.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because Richard was watching.””
Richard’s calm finally disappeared.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Daniel stood.
“No, I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
He pointed at him.
“You threatened Grace. You followed her. You tried to make her disappear.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“And you think you’re innocent?””
Daniel went quiet.
The room noticed.
I noticed.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I made mistakes.””
“What kind of mistakes?””
He took a breath.
“Before I met you, I worked for Richard.””
My heart dropped.
Nobody moved.
“You worked for him?””
“Yes.””
The answer was painful.
“But I was trying to get close to him. I thought I could expose him.””
“And you decided to use me.””
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.””
The silence that followed was unbearable.
I wanted to hate him.
I wanted the answer to be simple.
But nothing about this story was simple anymore.
My father took the flash drive.
“We need to see what’s on this.””
Before he could plug it in, the door opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Pale.
Tired.
But alive.
Thomas stopped breathing.
“Grace.””
The woman looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Thomas stared.
For five years, he believed she was gone.
And now she was standing in front of him.
He crossed the room slowly.
He didn’t hug her.
He didn’t speak.
He just touched her face like he needed proof she was real.
Then he whispered:
“Why did you leave me?””
Grace started crying.
“Because if I stayed…”
She looked toward Richard.
“He would have killed you too.””
Richard stepped back.
Just slightly.
But everyone saw.
Grace walked toward me.
“Lily.””
I couldn’t move.
“Why did you call me?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at my ring.
Her expression changed.
“Because I realized I was too late.””
My stomach tightened.
“Too late for what?””
Grace reached into her coat.
She pulled out an old envelope.
One I recognized immediately.
The same handwriting.
My grandfather’s.
She handed it to me.
“He wrote this after Daniel proposed.””
I stared.
“How did he know?””
Grace looked at me sadly.
“Because your grandfather knew Daniel would come back.””
I opened my mouth.
“But Daniel said—”
Grace shook her head.
“Daniel doesn’t know the whole truth.””
Everyone froze.
Even Daniel.
“What are you talking about?””
Grace looked directly at him.
Then said:
“Daniel, the man you spent your life trying to defeat…”
She paused.
“He wasn’t your enemy.””
May you like
The room went silent.
“He was your father.””
