Chapter 2: The Family He Bought
I didn’t remember walking out of the wedding hall.
One moment I was standing beside the altar.
The next, I was sitting in a small private room behind the ballroom, still wearing my wedding dress, staring at a cup of untouched water.
My hands wouldn’t stop shaking.
Ava sat beside me.
“Lily, say something.””
I looked down at my ring.
The diamond caught the light.
A beautiful symbol of a promise from someone I suddenly couldn’t trust.
“I don’t understand,” I whispered.
Ava reached for my hand.
“You will.””
“No,” I said.
“I won’t.””
My voice cracked.
“Because I spent two years understanding him.””
I remembered everything.
The first date.
The first time he told me he loved me.
The night he introduced me to his family.
Daniel had always seemed like the safest person in the world.
When my mother passed away years earlier, he was the person who sat with me through the grief.
When I struggled at work, he reminded me I was capable.
When I told him I was afraid of being alone, he held my hand and said, “You’ll never have to worry about that again.””
Now every comforting memory felt like a question.
How much of it was real?
The door opened.
My father walked in.
Behind him was Thomas.
I immediately stood.
“Why is he here?””
My father looked at me carefully.
“Because he may be the only person who knows the truth.””
I looked at Thomas.
“You ruined my wedding.””
Thomas accepted that without defending himself.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I did.””
“Why?””
“Because I watched someone else make the same mistake.””
He sat down slowly.
“Five years ago, my sister married Daniel.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Thomas looked down.
“She was his first target.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“Target?””
Thomas nodded.
“He didn’t create a fake family because he wanted to impress you.””
He placed another file on the table.
“He created it because he needed access.””
My father opened the folder.
“What kind of access?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Your family.””
My heart stopped.
“My family?””
Daniel knew my family was wealthy.
Not extremely wealthy.
But successful.
My grandfather built a chain of construction companies before retiring. My father expanded it. I never cared much about money, and Daniel always insisted he loved that about me.
He used to say, “Your heart is worth more than your last name.””
I wanted to believe that.
Thomas opened a document.
“Daniel spent months researching your family before he met you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“He knew where you worked. He knew your interests. He knew your family history.””
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Lily, do you remember how you met him?””
I froze.
A coffee shop.
Two years earlier.
I had dropped my wallet.
Daniel picked it up.
A simple, random moment.
Or at least I thought it was.
Thomas asked, “Do you remember what was inside your wallet?””
I frowned.
“My ID. Some cards.””
“And a business card from your father’s company?””
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Ava.
She slowly nodded.
“I remember.””
Thomas continued.
“He knew exactly who you were before he approached you.””
The room felt smaller.
I sat back down.
“No.””
The word came out weak.
“Daniel wouldn’t do that.””
Thomas’s expression softened.
“That’s what my sister said.””
He looked away for a moment.
“My sister believed she had found someone who saved her. She didn’t realize he was studying her.””
My father clenched his fists.
“What happened to your sister?””
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
“She lost everything.””
The silence after that was unbearable.
I looked at the folder.
“What does he want from my family?””
Thomas didn’t respond.
That frightened me.
“Tell me.””
He finally spoke.
“Control.””
My father looked confused.
“Control over what?””
Thomas pointed at the documents.
“Your family trust.””
I felt the room spin.
My grandfather’s trust.
The one created years ago.
The one that protected the company and family assets.
Only a few people knew about it.
Very few.
Daniel knew.
Because I told him.
Because I trusted him.
A memory flashed through my mind.
A late-night conversation months earlier.
Daniel lying beside me, asking innocent questions.
“What happens if your father retires?””
“Who manages everything?””
“Does your family have plans for the future?””
I thought he was interested in my life.
I thought he cared.
I never considered he was collecting information.
The door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
Daniel stood there.
His wedding suit was still perfect.
His expression wasn’t.
For the first time since I met him, he looked afraid.
“Lily.””
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“Please let me explain.””
Ava moved between us.
“You need to leave.””
Daniel ignored her.
His eyes stayed on me.
“Everything Thomas told you is twisted.””
I stared at him.
“Are they fake?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Are they?””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
My heart broke all over again.
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because I had to.””
I laughed quietly.
“You had to hire people to pretend they were your parents?””
“Lily—”
“You let me invite them into my home.””
“I was trying to build something.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You were building something around me.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I love you.””
I almost believed him.
Almost.
Then he said the words that destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.
“I never planned for it to happen like this.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked toward Thomas.
Then toward my father.
His face changed.
Like he had already made another decision.
And before he walked away, he whispered:
“Ask your father why he never told you what happened to your grandfather’s company.””
The door closed.
Leaving me with a question I never knew existed.
May you like
And the terrifying feeling that Daniel’s biggest secret wasn’t about his fake family.
It was about mine.
