Chapter 9: The Truth Claire Died Protecting

I don’t remember the drive home.

I remember the sound of the engine.

I remember my hands gripping the steering wheel.

I remember Michael sitting beside me, unusually quiet.

But everything else felt like a blur.

Because one thought kept repeating in my head.

Someone knew about Lily.

Someone had been watching us.

When we reached my apartment building, I ran upstairs.

“Lily!””

My voice echoed through the apartment.

For one terrifying second, there was no answer.

Then I heard a small sound.

A cry.

I rushed into her room.

She was there.

Safe.

Awake.

Confused by my panic.

I picked her up immediately.

“I’m here,” I whispered.

My daughter grabbed my shirt with her tiny fingers.

And that was when I realized something.

All these years, I thought I had lost everything when Claire left.

But I was wrong.

I had something worth protecting.

Something worth fighting for.

Michael stood in the doorway.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For bringing this into your life.””

I held Lily closer.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“No?””

I shook my head.

“This was already part of my life. I just didn’t know it.””

For the first time, Michael looked at me differently.

Not like an enemy.

Not like someone standing in his way.

Like someone who finally understood we were both victims of the same secret.

A few minutes later, Margaret and Henry arrived.

They looked exhausted, but Margaret immediately walked over and touched Lily’s hand.

“She’s beautiful.””

I watched her carefully.

There was no jealousy.

No anger.

Only sadness.

“You wanted to meet her?””

Margaret nodded.

“Since the day we found out Claire had a daughter.””

I frowned.

“Then why didn’t you?””

She looked at Michael.

And he lowered his head.

“Because I stopped them.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Why?””

Michael swallowed.

“Because I was angry.””

He looked at Lily.

“I thought everyone had betrayed me.””

I didn’t say anything.

Because I understood something.

Pain could make people become someone they didn’t recognize.

But pain was not an excuse.

“You hurt a lot of people,” I said.

Michael nodded.

“I know.””

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

“This is what Richard is looking for.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

“Claire found copies of the original records.””

Henry stepped closer.

“She hid them before she disappeared.””

Michael nodded.

“She knew if anything happened to her, someone needed to find them.””

I looked at the small device.

“So this proves what happened to my father?””

“Yes.””

“And what happened to Claire?””

Michael became quiet.

That answer scared me.

“What?””

He looked at the floor.

“Claire didn’t die because of an accident.””

My entire body froze.

“What are you saying?””

Margaret covered her mouth.

“We didn’t know the truth until recently.””

Michael continued.

“She was investigating Richard.””

I looked at him.

“And then?””

“She found something.””

He paused.

“She was going to expose him.””

The room became silent.

My daughter slept peacefully in my arms, unaware of how many secrets surrounded her.

“What happened the night she died?””

Michael looked at me.

“She called me.””

I felt anger rise.

“Again?””

He nodded.

“She told me she had proof.””

“Did you help her?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I didn’t believe her.””

Those words hurt more than I expected.

“She begged you?””

“Yes.””

“And you ignored her?””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty made the anger feel different.

Not smaller.

Just heavier.

“I thought she was trying to destroy my family.””

He wiped his face.

“I told her she was lying.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Henry quietly said:

“And the next morning, she was gone.””

My chest tightened.

For years, I hated Claire because I thought she abandoned me.

But she spent her final days trying to protect everyone.

Even people who didn’t believe her.

A sound came from outside.

A car door.

Everyone froze.

Michael looked toward the window.

“No.””

“What?””

He moved closer.

“Richard.””

I looked outside.

A black car was parked near the building.

A man stood beside it.

Older.

Well-dressed.

Watching.

Michael’s face went pale.

“He found us.””

The apartment suddenly felt unsafe.

Henry whispered:

“We need to move.””

But before anyone could move, my front door handle slowly turned.

Someone was trying to open it.

My heart stopped.

I stepped in front of Lily’s room.

Michael moved beside me.

The door handle stopped.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

“Daniel.””

I knew that voice.

Even though I had never heard it before.

It was calm.

Confident.

Dangerously calm.

“Open the door.””

Nobody moved.

Then the man spoke again.

And this time, his words revealed he knew exactly who I was.

“Your father made the same mistake you’re making now.””

I looked at Michael.

“What does he mean?””

Michael whispered:

“He’s admitting it.””

The hallway went silent.

Then Richard said:

“He tried to expose me.””

May you like

A pause.

“And look what happened to him.””
