Chapter 4: The Man Who Came Looking
The knocking continued.
Three seconds of silence.
Then another three knocks.
I stood frozen in the middle of my apartment.
Lily was sleeping in the other room.
Two strangers were sitting behind me.
And the man connected to the biggest unanswered question of my life was standing outside my door.
“Don’t open it,” Margaret whispered.
I looked back.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Because I don’t know what he wants.””
That answer bothered me.
Not because it scared me.
Because I could hear something deeper.
A mother afraid of her own son.
I walked closer to the door.
Henry stood.
“Daniel, wait.””
I stopped.
“Why?””
Henry looked at me.
“Because Michael isn’t the same man he was before.””
The knocking came again.
This time louder.
“Margaret?””
The voice outside was calm.
Too calm.
Margaret closed her eyes.
“He knows I’m here.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
She didn’t answer.
The truth came from Henry.
“He tracked her.””
I stared at him.
“You mean he was following you?””
Henry looked ashamed.
“We left home because we were afraid.””
The door shook slightly as the person outside knocked again.
“Mom.””
The single word made Margaret start crying.
Not because she missed him.
Because she was afraid of him.
I moved toward the door.
“I need to understand what’s happening.””
Margaret grabbed my sleeve.
“Daniel, please.””
I looked down at her hand.
A woman who had arrived at my home freezing and helpless was now begging me not to face the person who brought her there.
But this was my home.
My daughter was inside.
I slowly opened the door.
Only a few inches.
A man stood in the hallway.
He looked to be in his late thirties.
His expensive coat was soaked from the rain, but his expression was emotionless.
His eyes immediately moved past me.
Straight toward Margaret.
“Mom.””
Margaret didn’t respond.
The man looked at Henry.
“You shouldn’t have left.””
Henry’s face hardened.
“You abandoned us.””
The man’s jaw tightened.
“I told you I needed time.””
“Time?”” Margaret whispered.
“You left us in the rain.””
Michael looked away.
For a moment, I saw something flicker across his face.
Regret.
Then it disappeared.
His eyes moved back to me.
“And you must be Daniel.””
I felt my body tense.
“How do you know my name?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked inside my apartment.
His eyes stopped when he saw the baby monitor.
Then he looked back at me.
“That’s her, isn’t it?””
I stepped slightly in front of the doorway.
“Who?””
His expression changed.
“Lily.””
The way he said her name made my stomach drop.
“How do you know my daughter?””
Michael stared at me.
“Because I spent years believing she was mine.””
The hallway went silent.
I felt Margaret move behind me.
“Michael…”
He ignored her.
“You have no idea what Claire did.””
I looked directly at him.
“Then tell me.””
His face changed.
For the first time, the anger cracked.
Underneath it was pain.
“She lied to both of us.””
Rainwater dripped from his coat onto the floor.
“She built two different lives and let everyone else suffer.””
I wanted to be angry.
I wanted answers.
But seeing him standing there, broken and furious, I realized something.
Michael wasn’t just the man who had hurt his parents.
He was also someone who had been destroyed by the same secret.
“What do you want from me?”” I asked.
His eyes moved toward Lily’s room.
“I want the truth.””
I stepped forward.
“You’re not taking my daughter anywhere.””
Michael looked surprised.
Then he shook his head.
“I didn’t come here to take her.””
“Then why?””
He reached into his coat pocket.
Margaret gasped.
“Michael, don’t.””
He pulled out an envelope.
Not opening it.
Just holding it.
“I came because I found something after Claire died.””
I stared at the envelope.
“What?””
Michael looked at me.
“A letter.””
My heart started racing.
“A letter from who?””
His eyes locked with mine.
And the answer made every question I had carried for seven years come rushing back.
“From Claire.””
He paused.
“She wrote it the night she left you.””
I couldn’t breathe.
Because suddenly, I understood.
Claire hadn’t just disappeared.
She had left behind a secret.
And Michael was standing at my door because that secret involved all of us.
Then he said the one sentence I never expected to hear.
“She never abandoned you, Daniel.””
May you like
He looked down at the envelope.
“She was trying to protect you from me.””
