Chapter 6: The Box That Held The Truth

I didn’t sleep that night.

How could I?

My entire understanding of my past had changed in a few hours.

The woman I thought abandoned me had been protecting me.

The man I thought was just a stranger had been connected to my daughter’s life from the beginning.

And somewhere in the city was a box with Lily’s name on it.

I sat beside my daughter’s crib, watching her sleep.

Her tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

I didn’t know exactly who I was apologizing to.

Maybe Claire.

Maybe Lily.

Maybe myself.

For believing the worst.

A few hours later, when the rain finally stopped, I made a decision.

I needed the truth.

All of it.

Michael drove separately.

I didn’t trust him enough to ride with him.

Not yet.

But I also knew I couldn’t ignore what was happening.

Margaret and Henry came with us.

They looked exhausted.

But they looked relieved too.

Like they had been carrying this secret for years and were finally putting it down.

The bank was quiet that morning.

An employee led us into a private room.

Michael handed over the key.

The woman behind the desk checked the information.

Then she looked at me.

“Are you Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“This box was registered with instructions.””

My stomach tightened.

“What instructions?””

She looked at the paperwork.

“The contents may only be released when both Daniel Carter and Lily Carter are present.””

I froze.

Michael looked at me.

“So she planned this.””

I slowly nodded.

The employee opened the box.

Inside were several things.

A small bracelet.

A photograph.

A sealed envelope.

And a notebook.

The photograph was the first thing I picked up.

It was Claire and me.

Years ago.

Standing together outside a coffee shop.

She was smiling.

A smile I hadn’t seen in a long time.

On the back, she had written:

Before everything changed.

I closed my eyes.

Then I picked up the notebook.

The first page had one sentence.

For Daniel, when Lily is old enough to understand.

My hands trembled.

I opened it.

The first pages were memories.

Claire writing about my daughter.

Her first heartbeat.

Her first movement.

The first time she heard Lily cry.

Every moment I had missed.

Every moment she had wanted me there for.

I swallowed hard.

Then I reached the final pages.

The ones written shortly before Claire disappeared.

Daniel, I know you will wonder why I didn’t fight harder to come back.

The truth is, I did.

My breathing slowed.

But Michael made sure I understood that he would destroy anyone who helped me.

I looked at Michael.

He was staring at the floor.

I found proof of things he did. Financial threats. Lies. Manipulation.

My hands tightened around the notebook.

But the most painful part was realizing he wasn’t only hurting me.

He was hurting his own parents too.

Margaret started crying quietly.

Henry put an arm around her.

Then I reached the last page.

And that was where everything changed.

Daniel, there is something I never told you.

I stopped.

A strange feeling moved through me.

Lily was not the only thing I was trying to protect.

My heart raced.

I read the next sentence.

I was trying to protect you from a secret about Michael’s family.

I looked up.

“What secret?””

Nobody answered.

I kept reading.

If Michael ever finds out what is hidden beneath his father’s old business records, he will do everything possible to stop the truth from coming out.

I looked at Henry.

His face had gone pale.

“Business records?”” I asked.

Henry slowly sat down.

“There’s something you need to know.””

Michael looked confused.

“Dad?””

Henry stared at the notebook.

Then at me.

“Your father…”

I frowned.

“My father?””

Henry nodded.

“Daniel, your father and Michael’s father knew each other.””

The room went silent.

I felt the ground shift beneath me.

“My father died when I was a child.””

“I know,” Henry whispered.

“Then how could he be connected to this?””

Margaret looked at Michael.

Then back at me.

“Because the secret Claire discovered…”

She paused.

“…started before you were even born.””

Before I could respond, Michael’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed instantly.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He just stared at the message.

Then he slowly looked at me.

“Daniel.””

May you like

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Someone else knows we found the box.””
