Chapter 3: The Name From My Past
I stared at Henry, waiting for him to explain.
But he didn’t.
He just looked down at the floor like he was afraid of the words sitting in his own mouth.
“My daughter?”” I repeated.
Margaret reached over and touched my arm.
“Daniel, we’re not trying to frighten you.””
“Then tell me what you mean.””
My voice came out sharper than I intended.
I looked toward Lily’s room.
The thought of anyone connecting my baby to some stranger’s family made every protective instinct inside me wake up.
Henry nodded slowly.
“You deserve the truth.””
The rain continued pounding against the windows.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Margaret took a deep breath.
“Our son Michael was married once.””
I frowned.
“Married?””
She nodded.
“Years ago. Before he became the person he is now.””
“What does that have to do with me?””
Margaret looked at the old photograph in my hand.
“His wife’s name was Claire.””
The name hit me like a memory I had buried.
Claire.
I hadn’t heard that name in years.
My fingers tightened around the picture.
“No.””
Margaret noticed my reaction.
“You know her?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because suddenly, pieces of my past started falling into place.
Claire was my college girlfriend.
The person I thought I would spend my life with.
The person who disappeared from my world after one terrible conversation.
Seven years ago, she had called me crying.
She told me she had made a mistake.
She told me she needed time.
Then she vanished.
I never knew she had married someone else.
I never knew she had a child.
I never knew anything.
“I knew Claire,” I finally whispered.
Henry leaned forward.
“What was your relationship with her?””
I looked at Lily’s crib.
Then back at them.
“She was the woman I loved.””
Margaret covered her mouth.
“Oh my…”
“But she left.””
The words felt strange saying them out loud after so many years.
“She said she needed a fresh start. I tried to find her, but she changed her number. Moved away.””
Henry exchanged a look with Margaret.
A look that made my stomach twist.
“What?”” I asked.
Margaret’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Daniel…”
She reached for my hand.
“Claire never told Michael about you.””
I stared at her.
“What are you saying?””
Henry sighed.
“Our son believed Lily was his daughter.””
The room became completely silent.
I looked toward my baby.
My little girl.
My whole world.
“No.””
Margaret’s voice softened.
“We don’t know everything. We only know what Michael told us.””
“What did he tell you?””
Henry looked uncomfortable.
“He said Claire became pregnant after they got married. He said they were building a family.””
I stood up.
My chair scraped against the floor.
“But Lily is my daughter.””
Margaret immediately nodded.
“We believe you.””
“Then why are you telling me this?””
Because deep down, I already knew.
There was something bigger happening.
Something Claire had hidden from everyone.
Margaret looked at the floor.
“Because two weeks ago, Michael found out something.””
“What?””
Henry answered.
“He discovered Claire had lied to him.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What kind of lie?””
Henry looked at Lily’s room.
“The kind that destroyed their marriage.””
I swallowed.
“What does Michael know about me?””
Margaret hesitated.
Then she said quietly:
“He knows your name.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“How?””
“He found old messages. Old photographs. Things Claire kept hidden.””
I ran my hand through my hair.
This was impossible.
For years, I had wondered why Claire left.
Why she disappeared.
Why she never came back.
And now, years later, the answer was somehow sitting in my living room.
“Where is Claire now?”” I asked.
Margaret looked at Henry.
Neither of them answered.
That scared me more than anything.
“Where is she?””
Henry finally spoke.
“She passed away last year.””
I froze.
The anger I had carried for years suddenly had nowhere to go.
Claire was gone.
I would never ask her why.
I would never hear her explain.
I sat down slowly.
Margaret reached for my hand again.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“What happened to Michael?””
Her expression changed.
“He changed after he found out.””
“How?””
“He became obsessed with finding answers.””
Henry’s voice was quiet.
“He blamed Claire. He blamed himself. And eventually…”
He stopped.
“And eventually what?””
Margaret looked toward the door.
“He blamed us.””
I felt confused.
“Why would he blame you?””
“Because we knew Claire before he married her.””
Henry looked ashamed.
“We knew she had secrets.””
The words made my heart race.
“What secrets?””
Before either of them could answer, there was a loud sound from outside.
A car door slammed.
All three of us turned toward the window.
A dark vehicle was parked outside my apartment building.
The headlights cut through the rain.
Margaret’s face suddenly went pale.
“Oh no.””
I stood.
“What?””
She grabbed Henry’s hand.
“He found us.””
My chest tightened.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then someone knocked on my apartment door.
Three slow knocks.
Not desperate.
Not frightened.
Controlled.
The kind of knock from someone who knew exactly where they were.
Margaret whispered one sentence.
May you like
And it changed everything.
“That’s Michael.””
