Chapter 8: The Man Who Wanted The Past Buried
Nobody spoke after Henry said that name.
The silence felt heavier than the storm from the night before.
Michael looked completely shocked.
“My uncle?””
Henry nodded slowly.
“Your uncle Richard.””
Michael shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Henry’s voice cracked.
“You know what kind of man he was.””
Michael looked away.
I watched him carefully.
Because his reaction told me something.
He wasn’t defending Richard.
He was trying to convince himself.
“Where is he now?”” I asked.
Margaret answered quietly.
“Still alive.””
My stomach tightened.
“Does he know about Lily?””
Michael looked at me.
“That’s what scares me.””
The room suddenly felt too small.
A few hours ago, I was a single father trying to lower my baby’s fever.
Now I was standing in a bank with a family I had never known existed, uncovering a secret connected to my father’s death.
And somehow, my daughter was at the center of it.
“We need to leave,” Michael said.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if Richard knows we opened that box, he knows we found the evidence.””
I stared at him.
“Evidence of what?””
Michael looked at the notebook.
“Everything.””
We left the bank within minutes.
But the feeling of being watched followed us.
Outside, the sky had cleared.
The city looked normal.
People walked past carrying coffee.
Cars moved through traffic.
Nobody knew that my entire life had just changed.
Michael stopped beside his car.
“I need to tell you something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He hesitated.
“When Claire disappeared, she didn’t go far.””
I froze.
“What are you talking about?””
“She stayed nearby.””
My heart started racing.
“Where?””
Michael looked at the ground.
“She was hiding.””
“From you?””
He nodded.
“But she was also looking for someone.””
“Who?””
His eyes met mine.
“You.””
I didn’t understand.
“If she wanted to find me, why didn’t she?””
“Because she found out someone was watching you.””
A chill ran through me.
“Who?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Instead, he opened his car door.
Inside was a folder.
He pulled out several photographs.
My hands went cold.
The pictures showed me.
Outside my apartment.
At the grocery store.
Walking with Lily.
Taken from a distance.
My breathing stopped.
“When were these taken?””
Michael’s voice was low.
“Recently.””
I looked at him.
“How recently?””
He didn’t need to answer.
The fear on his face told me.
“Someone has been watching me.””
Michael nodded.
“And Lily.””
My entire body went still.
I immediately thought about my daughter.
I needed to get home.
Now.
I grabbed my keys.
But before I could leave, Henry called my name.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
The old man looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“Claire didn’t leave because she didn’t love you.””
I swallowed.
“She left because she knew someone would come after the people she loved.””
I looked back toward my apartment building.
Toward Lily.
My daughter.
The person I had promised to protect.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke at first.
Only silence.
Then a man’s voice whispered:
“Daniel Carter?””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“You should have left the past buried.””
My blood ran cold.
“How do you know my name?””
The man ignored my question.
Instead, he said:
“Your daughter is the last piece of evidence Claire left behind.””
My heart stopped.
“What did you do?””
The voice became colder.
“Nothing yet.””
A pause.
“But if you keep searching…”
I heard a click.
Then the call ended.
I stood frozen.
Because for the first time, I realized the truth.

This wasn’t just about uncovering my father’s past.
Someone was willing to do anything to make sure Lily never learned hers.
