Chapter 7: The Father Behind the Locked Door
Nobody answered the phone.
Not Aunt Clara.
Not Uncle Daniel.
Not Mr. Bennett.
The name glowing on the screen seemed impossible.
For years, everyone had spoken about my father like he was a ghost.
Someone who had left.
Someone who had disappeared.
Someone who belonged to the past.
But now his name was right there.
Calling.
Alive.
My fingers moved toward the bracelet without thinking.
The silver heart pressed against my skin.
Mommy knew.
Somehow, Mommy knew this moment would happen.
Aunt Clara stared at the phone like it had betrayed her.
“Answer it,” Daniel said.
She didn’t move.
“Clara.””
Her eyes lifted.
“You heard me.””
She looked nervous.
Actually nervous.
Not angry.
Not annoyed.
Afraid.
That was the first time I saw Aunt Clara look afraid.
Mr. Bennett stepped closer.
“If you don’t answer, I will.””
Aunt Clara quickly pulled the phone away.
“No.””
The word came out too fast.
Everyone noticed.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What are you hiding?””
“I’m not hiding anything.””
“You’re scared.””
“I’m not.””
“You are.””
Aunt Clara looked at the screen again.
The phone continued ringing.
And then it stopped.
The silence afterward felt even louder.
I stared at the phone.
“He called.””
Nobody spoke.
“He really called.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Then Daddy isn’t gone.””
His face softened.
“No.””
I swallowed.
“Then why didn’t he come?””
Nobody had an answer.
Not even now.
After all the secrets.
After all the lies.
Nobody could answer the one question that mattered most.
Why didn’t my father come for me?
Aunt Clara suddenly grabbed her coat.
“I’m leaving.””
Daniel moved in front of the door.
“No.””
She glared at him.
“Move.””
“You don’t get to walk away.””
“Watch me.””
“You know where he is.””
Aunt Clara’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Daniel saw it.
“You know.””
She laughed.
“You’re still so desperate to believe you can fix everything.””
“Where is he?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why did he call you?””
Silence.
Mr. Bennett stepped forward.
“Clara.””
His voice was calm.
But dangerous.
“If you know anything about Mia’s father, now is the time to speak.””
Aunt Clara looked at me.
Then at the bracelet.
Then back at Daniel.
“You all think I’m the villain.””
Nobody answered.
“Maybe I am.””
Her voice became softer.
“But I’m not the only one who made choices.””
She opened the door.
Daniel stopped her.
“Don’t.””
She looked at him.
“Do you really want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Even if it destroys you?””
Daniel didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.””
Aunt Clara smiled sadly.
“Then find him.””
She stepped outside.
And before anyone could stop her, she said:
“Your father knows why your mother died.””
Then she closed the door.
I didn’t understand.
But I understood enough.
Everyone became quiet.
Mommy.
Daddy.
The bracelet.
The secrets.
They were all connected.
“Uncle Daniel?””
He looked at me.
“Did Mommy die because of Daddy?””
His face broke.
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“No, Mia.””
“Then why did she hide things?””
He came closer.
“Because she loved you.””
“But love doesn’t hide things.””
Daniel looked at the bracelet.
“Sometimes it does.””
“Why?””
“Because sometimes the truth is dangerous.””
I looked at Mr. Bennett.
“Can Daddy tell me?””
The attorney nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Then call him.””
Nobody moved.
“Call him.””
Daniel looked at Mr. Bennett.
The attorney took out his phone.
“We don’t have his number.””
“But Aunt Clara did.””
Daniel picked up the phone she left behind.
The screen was still open.
He looked at the recent call.
There it was.
The number.
He pressed it.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then someone answered.
Nobody spoke.
I held my breath.
Then I heard it.
A man’s voice.
Older than I imagined.
Tired.
But gentle.
“Hello?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Ethan.””
The silence on the other end was immediate.
Then:
“Daniel?””
The way he said the name sounded like he was remembering something painful.
“Yes.””
A long pause.
“Why are you calling me?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Mia needs you.””
The line went completely silent.
Then I heard a shaky breath.
“Mia?””
My heart jumped.
He knew my name.
He knew.
I stepped closer.
“Daddy?””
The word left my mouth before I could stop it.
There was silence.
Then a sound.
A broken sound.
Like someone crying quietly.
“Is that… her?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Yes.””
I held the phone.
Not because anyone told me to.
Because I needed to know.
“Daddy?””
Another silence.
Then:
“Sweetheart.””
My knees almost gave out.
Nobody had called me that except Mommy.
“You’re real.””
The man on the phone laughed softly through tears.
“Yes.””
“Where were you?””
I heard him breathe.
And then:
“Far away.””
“Why?””
The question I had carried for years.
The question that hurt more than anything.
“Why didn’t you come get me?””
The line went silent.
So long that I thought maybe he had left too.
Then he whispered:
“Because I thought your mother didn’t want me.””
I looked at Daniel.
He lowered his eyes.
“But Mommy loved you.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
“I was lied to.””
The words were quiet.
But everyone heard them.
“Who?””
Another pause.
Then Ethan said:
“I don’t know.””
I hated those words.
Again.
Another adult who didn’t know.
But then he continued.
“Not at first.””
“What does that mean?””
“I found out later.””
“Found out what?””
His voice changed.
Serious.
Afraid.
“That the message I received from your mother…”
Everyone froze.
“What message?””
“The one telling me never to contact her again…”
I looked at Daniel.
“That wasn’t from her.””
The room became silent.
Daniel looked sick.
“What?””
Ethan continued.
“I tried to call her.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
“What happened?””
“Someone answered.””
“Who?””
He paused.
Then said:
“Your uncle.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
My heart sank.
“No.””
Daniel whispered.
Ethan’s voice became harder.
“He told me she was done with me.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“He told me you both wanted a new life.””
I stared at my uncle.
“Did you?””
Daniel shook his head quickly.
“No.””
His voice broke.
“No, Mia.””
“Then why did Daddy believe it?””
“Because I was angry.””
The confession was barely a whisper.
“I thought I was protecting your mother.””
Ethan spoke again.
“And then she died.””
Nobody moved.
“I found out months later.””
I looked at the phone.
“Daddy…”
His voice softened.
“I’m sorry.””
I touched the bracelet.
“Mommy left this for me.””
“I know.””
“You know?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Another silence.
Then Ethan said:
“Because I was there when she made it.””
My eyes widened.
“You were?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you stay?””
A painful breath.
“Because your mother asked me to leave.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
Ethan continued.
“She told me if anything happened to her, I had to stay away until the truth was safe.””
Mr. Bennett stepped closer.
“Why?””
“Because she knew someone was watching her.””
The room went cold.
“Who?””
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“The person who wanted the bracelet.””
My hand covered the silver heart.
“The bracelet?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because it contains proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Proof that your mother was murdered.””
The word hit the room like thunder.
Murdered.
Not an accident.
Not just sickness.
Murdered.
I looked at Daniel.
His face had gone completely white.
Mr. Bennett whispered:
“Ethan…”
“I’m sorry she didn’t get to tell Mia herself.””
My fingers trembled.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Who hurt Mommy?””
The line became silent.
Then Ethan said:
“The same person who is trying to take the bracelet.””
Nobody breathed.
“Who?””
Before Ethan answered, there was a loud crash outside.
Everyone turned.
The front window shattered.
Daniel grabbed me and pulled me close.
Mr. Bennett dropped the phone.
The line stayed open.
Then Ethan shouted through the speaker:
“Get Mia out of there!””
Daniel looked toward the broken window.
A dark figure stood outside in the rain.
Watching.
Waiting.
Then Ethan’s voice came again.
But this time, it was filled with fear.
“Daniel…”
Everyone froze.
“What?”” Daniel answered.
“That person isn’t there for the bracelet.””
May you like
A pause.
“They’re there because they know Mia finally found her father.””
