Chapter 13: The Attorney Who Carried My Mother’s Last Secret

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The person standing in the doorway was Mr. Bennett.

The man who brought me my mother’s letter.

The man who found the bracelet.

The man who sat on the floor with me when I was scared.

The man who said my mother wanted the truth to come out.

And now…

He was standing outside in the darkness.

Looking at us like he had been caught.

Uncle Daniel stepped forward immediately.

“What are you doing here?””

Mr. Bennett didn’t answer.

His eyes moved around the room.

To Victor.

To Daniel.

Then to me.

His expression wasn’t angry.

It was worse.

It was sad.

“I wanted to tell you myself.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“Tell us what?””

Mr. Bennett looked at the bracelet on my wrist.

“The rest of the truth.””

Victor laughed quietly.

“So it finally comes out.””

I looked at Victor.

“You knew?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me.

Because everyone seemed to know something except me.

Everyone had pieces of my life.

Pieces of Mommy.

Pieces of Daddy.

Pieces of the truth.

And I was the only one who had been left with questions.

“Mr. Bennett,” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“Did you know?””

His face changed.

A small movement.

But enough.

“Yes.””

My heart hurt.

“You knew who hurt Mommy?””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled.

“Because your mother asked me not to.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Mr. Bennett stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

“She knew there was a chance she wouldn’t survive.””

Nobody spoke.

“She knew people would come looking for the evidence.””

He looked at the bracelet.

“She knew the person who had the most reason to hide the truth would also be the person everyone trusted.””

I swallowed.

“Was that you?””

His face broke.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“No, Mia.””

“Then why?””

Mr. Bennett slowly walked toward the table.

He placed a folder down.

“Because I was protecting the evidence.””

Daniel looked furious.

“You were protecting it?””

“Yes.””

“You let Mia lose her bracelet.””

“I didn’t.””

“You let Clara take it.””

Mr. Bennett looked at him.

“I needed to know who would try.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You knew Clara would do that?””

“I suspected.””

“And you watched?””

Mr. Bennett looked ashamed.

“I was trying to uncover everyone involved.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Everyone?””

“Yes.””

“Meaning there was more than one person?””

Mr. Bennett nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at the people in the room.

My family.

My mother’s lawyer.

My father on the phone.

A grandfather who disappeared.

A doctor who betrayed his patient.

Aunt Clara.

Everyone connected.

Everyone hiding.

“Who else?””

Mr. Bennett opened the folder.

“Before your mother died, she gave me copies of everything.””

He removed several documents.

“Financial records.””

“Medical records.””

“Messages.””

“Photographs.””

He placed them on the table.

“She knew Victor was involved.””

Victor looked away.

“But she also knew someone else was helping him.””

Daniel stared.

“Dr. Harris.””

Mr. Bennett nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why are you here?””

Mr. Bennett looked at him.

“Because Dr. Harris was never the final person.””

The room became silent.

“What?””

Mr. Bennett took a deep breath.

“Dr. Harris was working for someone.””

Victor looked up.

“What?””

Everyone turned.

Even Victor.

Mr. Bennett continued.

“Your mother discovered that the money theft was only part of it.””

“Then what was the rest?”” Daniel asked.

Mr. Bennett looked at me.

And I knew.

I knew before he said it.

Because everything always came back to me.

“Mia.””

My fingers tightened around the bracelet.

“What about me?””

Mr. Bennett’s voice softened.

“Your mother discovered that someone had been trying to change your legal identity.””

I frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

Daniel looked confused too.

“Why?””

“Because someone wanted Mia to disappear from the records.””

The room went cold.

“Disappear?””

Mr. Bennett nodded.

“Not physically.””

He looked at me.

“Legally.””

I didn’t understand.

But the adults did.

Daniel whispered:

“They wanted her to have no connection to us.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Mr. Bennett looked at the documents.

“Because whoever controlled her identity controlled everything.””

Victor stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.””

Mr. Bennett looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“It’s exactly what happened.””

Victor looked angry.

“Who?””

Mr. Bennett didn’t answer.

Instead, he opened another file.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of a document.

A birth certificate.

My birth certificate.

I recognized my name.

Mia Carter.

But something was wrong.

There was another name written underneath.

A different last name.

I stared.

“What is that?””

Mr. Bennett looked at me.

“That was the identity someone tried to give you.””

“Why?””

“Because if they succeeded…”

He paused.

“You would no longer legally belong to your parents.””

My stomach twisted.

“But Mommy is my mommy.””

“Yes.””

“Daddy is my daddy.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Mr. Bennett looked at Daniel.

“Because someone wanted custody.””

The word sounded scary.

Custody.

Adults used it when they fought over children.

When children became something people argued about.

I hated that.

“I’m not a thing.””

Everyone looked at me.

My voice shook.

“I’m not something people can own.””

Daniel immediately knelt beside me.

“No.””

His eyes filled.

“You’re not.””

Mr. Bennett nodded.

“You’re right.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did everyone fight over me?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer hurt.

Because adults sometimes forgot children weren’t prizes.

They were people.

The phone suddenly rang.

Ethan.

Mr. Bennett answered.

“What happened?””

Ethan’s voice came through.

“I found something.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

“A message from Dr. Harris.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where?””

“In an old account.””

Mr. Bennett frowned.

“What does it say?””

Silence.

Then Ethan said:

“He wasn’t working for Victor.””

Everyone froze.

Victor looked confused.

“What?””

Ethan continued:

“He was afraid of Victor.””

Nobody spoke.

“Then who was he working for?””

Ethan’s voice became quiet.

“The same person who ordered the identity change.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then Ethan said:

“The person who had access to all of our family records.””

Daniel looked at Mr. Bennett.

Mr. Bennett looked away.

And suddenly…

I knew.

Not because anyone told me.

Because I saw the fear on their faces.

The person who had access.

The person who handled documents.

The person who knew every secret.

The person who had been helping us find the truth.

Mr. Bennett.

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Mr. Bennett looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

The room exploded.

Daniel grabbed him by the jacket.

“You?””

“I never wanted this.””

“You were involved?””

“No.””

“Then explain!””

Mr. Bennett closed his eyes.

“I was investigating.””

“Investigating yourself?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I was investigating the person who used my name.””

Everyone stopped.

“What?””

Mr. Bennett looked at me.

“Mia…”

He took a shaky breath.

“Someone stole my identity.””

Nobody moved.

“They used my credentials.””

“My access.””

“My reputation.””

“To change the records.””

Daniel slowly released him.

“Who?””

Mr. Bennett looked toward the window.

And whispered:

“The person who knew I would never suspect them.””

The room became silent.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message.

He looked at it.

His face went pale.

“What?””

He turned the phone around.

The message had only one sentence.

*You should have let the girl stay forgotten.*

And beneath it was a name.

A name that made my blood run cold.

Because it belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.

Someone from my mother’s past.

Someone who had been hiding closer than anyone.

Mr. Bennett whispered:

“She’s alive.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Mr. Bennett looked at me.

And said:

“Your mother’s sister.””

Aunt Clara’s sister.

The woman everyone thought died years ago.

The woman nobody had mentioned.

The woman who knew every secret before it happened.

May you like

And somewhere out there…

She was coming for me.
