Chapter 6: The Night Everyone Lied
Nobody moved.
Not Uncle Daniel.
Not Mr. Bennett.
Not even Aunt Clara.
The only sound in the room was the rain tapping against the windows.
Soft.
Slow.
Almost like the house itself was waiting for someone to tell the truth.
I looked at Uncle Daniel.
I wanted him to say something.
Anything.
I wanted him to laugh and tell Aunt Clara she was lying.
I wanted him to say:
“Don’t listen to her, little star.””
But he didn’t.
He just stood there.
Silent.
And that scared me more than Aunt Clara’s words.
Because when someone lies, sometimes they talk too much.
But when someone is hiding something real…
They go quiet.
“Uncle Daniel?””
My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.
He looked at me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Shame.
Not sadness.
Not anger.
Shame.
Aunt Clara noticed.
Her smile grew.
“There it is.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“I spent months being called cruel. I spent months hearing everyone say I was selfish.””
She pointed at him.
“But he gets to stand here and pretend he’s innocent?””
Mr. Bennett stepped forward.
“Clara, leave.””
She laughed.
“You still don’t understand, do you?””
She looked at me.
“Mia deserves to know who she trusts.””
My fingers wrapped around the bracelet.
Mommy’s bracelet.
The thing that brought everyone’s secrets out.
“Uncle Daniel,” I whispered.
“Did you do something bad?””
His eyes filled.
And I hated that.
Because I didn’t want him to look hurt.
I wanted him to look angry.
I wanted him to prove Aunt Clara wrong.
Daniel slowly sat down.
The strength seemed to disappear from him.
“I made a mistake.””
Aunt Clara crossed her arms.
“A mistake?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“A terrible mistake.””
My heart sank.
“What mistake?””
He took a long breath.
“Your father…”
The word made everyone quiet.
“Your father and your mother had a fight before she got sick.””
I listened carefully.
Mommy and Daddy.
The two people I barely remembered together.
“What kind of fight?””
Daniel looked at me.
“A serious one.””
“Did Daddy leave?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“He didn’t leave you.””
I tilted my head.
“Then where was he?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“That’s the part I have to explain.””
Aunt Clara leaned against the wall.
“Finally.””
Daniel ignored her.
“Your mother found out she was sick.””
My chest tightened.
I knew that part.
Doctors.
Hospitals.
Whispers.
But I didn’t know what happened before.
“She was scared,” Daniel continued.
“Not because she was dying.””
I frowned.
“Not because?””
He shook his head.
“Your mother was scared because she thought you would be left alone.””
I looked at my teddy bear.
“I had Mommy.””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“Not forever.””
I hated that sentence.
Because it was true.
He continued.
“Your mother wanted your father to come back. She wanted him to know about you.””
“But he already knew me.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he leave?””
Daniel looked at Aunt Clara.
“She made sure he thought your mother wanted him gone.””
My eyes moved to Aunt Clara.
She didn’t deny it.
That was worse.
“Why?””
Aunt Clara shrugged.
“Because some people ruin their own lives.””
Mr. Bennett’s expression hardened.
“You manipulated a dying woman’s family.””
Aunt Clara rolled her eyes.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“Then explain.””
She smiled.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
Daniel laughed once.
A painful sound.
“Protect?””
He stood.
“You lied to him.””
“I told him the truth.””
“You told him what you wanted him to believe.””
“And you did nothing.””
That hit him.
Daniel went silent.
I looked between them.
“Why didn’t you stop her?””
The question was for Daniel.
And he knew.
“I tried.””
“But?””
He looked at me.
“But I failed.””
The room became blurry.
I didn’t want to cry.
I hated crying in front of people.
But I was four.
And I was tired of being brave.
“Did Daddy think I didn’t want him?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“No.””
“Did he think Mommy didn’t want him?””
“Yes.””
“Because of Aunt Clara?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the bracelet.
“Then why didn’t you tell him?””
Daniel’s face collapsed.
“Because I thought I had time.””
That answer hurt.
“What does that mean?””
He looked away.
“It means I thought I could fix it later.””
Adults always thought there would be a later.
Later to apologize.
Later to explain.
Later to say goodbye.
But sometimes later never came.
“I should have found him,” Daniel whispered.
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
He wiped his eyes.
“Because your mother asked me not to tell you everything.””
I froze.
“Mommy?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the bracelet.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of Daddy?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Of what would happen if the wrong person knew where he was.””
Mr. Bennett stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“You need to tell her the whole truth.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
He looked at me.
“Your father wasn’t just someone your mother loved.””
I waited.
“He was connected to the secret your mother discovered.””
“What secret?””
Before Daniel answered, Aunt Clara interrupted.
“You see?””
Everyone looked at her.
“He still doesn’t tell you everything.””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“Clara.””
She walked closer.
“You want to know why your mother hid things?””
Nobody spoke.
“Because she knew someone close to her was dangerous.””
Mr. Bennett narrowed his eyes.
“Are you saying you weren’t involved?””
Aunt Clara smiled.
“I’m saying I wasn’t the only person with something to hide.””
Daniel stepped toward her.
“Don’t.””
“Why?””
Her smile faded.
“Because you’re scared she’ll find out?””
I felt my stomach twist.
“Find out what?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Daniel.
“Please.””
That one word broke him.
He looked at the floor.
Then he said:
“The night your father disappeared…”
Everyone became still.
“I was the one who drove him away.””
The room stopped.
I couldn’t understand.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I told him to leave.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought I was protecting your mother.””
My eyes filled.
“But you weren’t.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I wasn’t.””
Aunt Clara watched silently now.
Almost like she wanted this.
Daniel continued.
“Your father came to see your mother after they found out about the stolen money.””
“Then what?””
“They argued.””
“Why?””
“Because your father wanted to take you away.””
My heart jumped.
“Take me?””
“To keep you safe.””
I hugged my teddy bear.
“But Mommy?””
“She didn’t want you taken away.””
“Then what happened?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I thought your father was only making things worse.””
“So you told him to leave?””
“Yes.””
“And he did?””
Daniel nodded.
“He believed me.””
I whispered:
“He believed you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because I was your mother’s brother.””
The words hurt.
Because that meant he trusted him.
And Daniel broke that trust.
“What happened after?””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I tried to find him.””
“But?””
“I couldn’t.””
Aunt Clara suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at her.
“You’re leaving out the most important part.””
Daniel turned.
“Stop.””
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“Tell her what happened after he left.””
Daniel’s face went pale.
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
He didn’t answer.
Aunt Clara smiled.
“The next morning…”
She paused.
“Your mother received a message from someone claiming to be your father.””
Mr. Bennett frowned.
“What?””
Daniel looked shocked.
“What are you talking about?””
Aunt Clara reached into her bag.
She pulled out a phone.
An old phone.
“My sister kept everything.””
She turned it on.
“There was one message.””
She pressed a button.
Then she read:
“Don’t look for me. I can’t be part of Mia’s life anymore.””
My heart broke.
I covered my mouth.
No.
Daddy didn’t leave.
He couldn’t have.
But the message existed.
Daniel stared at the phone.
“That’s impossible.””
Aunt Clara looked at him.
“Is it?””
Mr. Bennett grabbed the phone.
“Where did you get this?””
“From your sister’s things.””
“You stole it.””
Aunt Clara ignored him.
Daniel looked at me.
“Mia…”
I stepped back.
Because suddenly everything felt confusing.
Everyone had a different story.
Everyone said they loved me.
But everyone had secrets.
I looked at Uncle Daniel.
“Did Daddy leave because of me?””
His face changed immediately.
“No.””
“Did he stop loving me?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
Nobody answered.
Then the phone in Aunt Clara’s hand buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
For the first time…
She looked scared.
“What is it?”” Mr. Bennett asked.
She didn’t respond.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who is calling?””
Aunt Clara slowly turned the phone around.
Everyone saw the name.
And everyone froze.
Because the person calling…
Was someone nobody expected.
Someone who had been missing for years.
Someone who knew the truth.
May you like
The screen showed one name.
*Mia’s father.*
