Chapter 14: The Woman Who Knew My Mother Before Anyone Else

Nobody spoke after Mr. Bennett said her name.

Not because we didn’t have questions.

Because suddenly we had too many.

My mother’s sister.

A woman nobody talked about.

A woman who was supposed to be dead.

A woman who knew every secret before we did.

I looked at Daniel.

“Mommy had a sister?””

His face was full of pain.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because your mother didn’t want you involved.””

I shook my head.

“But everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice became louder.

“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””

The room went silent.

“But I was still alone.””

Nobody answered.

Because they knew.

They all knew.

I had spent months missing Mommy.

Months wondering why Daddy left.

Months holding a teddy bear because it was the only thing that stayed.

And everyone around me had pieces of the truth.

Pieces they kept away from me.

Mr. Bennett looked at me.

“You’re right.””

I stared at him.

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t explain.

He just admitted it.

“We thought we were protecting you.””

“You were protecting yourselves.””

The words surprised everyone.

Including me.

But they were true.

Because sometimes adults hid things because they were scared.

Not because they were kind.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“You sound like your mother.””

I looked at him.

“Was she angry?””

“No.””

A sad smile appeared.

“She was honest.””

The phone buzzed.

Everyone turned.

Ethan.

Mr. Bennett answered immediately.

“Ethan.””

His voice came through.

“I found her.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who?””

“The woman.””

A pause.

“Your mother-in-law’s sister.””

Mr. Bennett’s face tightened.

“Where?””

“I tracked the message.””

“Tell us.””

Silence.

Then Ethan said:

“She’s not hiding.””

That surprised everyone.

“What?””

“She wants us to find her.””

Victor laughed quietly.

“That sounds like her.””

Everyone looked at him.

“You know her?””

Victor’s expression changed.

“Yes.””

Daniel stared.

“How?””

Victor looked away.

“Because she was the first person who warned me about your mother.””

The room became colder.

“Warned you?””

Victor nodded.

“She told me your wife would destroy the family.””

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“You listened to her.””

Victor didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I believed her.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

Daniel looked away.

I watched him.

So many people had hurt Mommy because they believed the wrong person.

Because they trusted the wrong voice.

“Who is she?””

Mr. Bennett asked.

Victor answered.

“Evelyn.””

The name sounded unfamiliar.

But everyone reacted.

Especially Daniel.

“You know her.””

He looked at Victor.

“You knew her.””

Victor nodded.

“She was your mother’s older sister.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Then why did nobody tell me she was alive?””

Victor was silent.

That was an answer too.

Mr. Bennett grabbed his coat.

“We need to go.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You stay here.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Mia.””

“No.””

He stopped.

I held my teddy bear.

“I’m tired of waiting.””

Nobody spoke.

“I’m tired of people leaving and telling me it’s for my own good.””

Daniel looked like I had hurt him.

Good.

Maybe he needed to understand.

“I want to know why Mommy was scared.””

I touched the bracelet.

“I want to know why everyone lied.””

Daniel knelt.

“Mia…”

“I’m coming.””

He looked at Mr. Bennett.

The attorney nodded.

“She’s right.””

Daniel sighed.

“I hate when you’re right.””

I almost smiled.

Almost.

We found Evelyn at an old house near the edge of town.

Not a hiding place.

Not a secret location.

Just a normal house.

That made it scarier.

Because dangerous people didn’t always look dangerous.

Sometimes they baked cookies.

Sometimes they smiled.

Sometimes they were family.

Daniel stood outside the door for a long time.

“You okay?””

I asked.

He looked at me.

“No.””

I nodded.

“Me neither.””

That seemed to help him.

Because he smiled slightly.

“You really are your mother’s daughter.””

Before he could knock…

The door opened.

An old woman stood there.

Her hair was silver.

Her eyes were the same color as Mommy’s.

I knew immediately.

Not because someone told me.

Because something inside me recognized her.

She looked at me.

And tears filled her eyes.

“Mia.””

I stepped closer.

“You knew my mommy?””

The woman covered her mouth.

“Yes.””

Her voice broke.

“I knew her before anyone.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Evelyn.””

She looked at him.

“You grew up.””

He stared.

“You’re alive.””

A sad smile.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because your mother asked me to disappear.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Evelyn opened the door.

“Come inside.””

Nobody moved.

Then she said:

“You deserve to know why.””

Inside, the house smelled like old books and flowers.

The same smell as Mommy’s room.

That made my chest hurt.

Evelyn sat down.

She looked at the bracelet.

“You still have it.””

I nodded.

“Mommy gave it to me.””

She smiled sadly.

“She did.””

“You helped her make it?””

Evelyn looked surprised.

“How do you know?””

“I don’t.””

I touched the heart charm.

“I just thought maybe.””

The woman looked at me for a long moment.

Then she whispered:

“You really are her daughter.””

Daniel sat across from her.

“Tell us everything.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“Yes.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of Victor?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone became still.

“Then who?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Your mother.””

I frowned.

“Mommy?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she asked me to.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would she ask her own sister to disappear?””

Evelyn took a deep breath.

“Because she knew someone would come after the people closest to her.””

“Who?””

Evelyn looked at the bracelet.

“The person who wanted the truth buried.””

Mr. Bennett leaned forward.

“Dr. Harris?””

“No.””

“Victor?””

“No.””

Everyone became silent.

“Then who?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Mia…”

Her voice softened.

“Your mother wasn’t afraid of losing her life.””

My stomach tightened.

“She was afraid of losing you.””

A tear moved down her face.

“Because she discovered something about your birth.””

Again.

My birth.

The secret everyone kept returning to.

“What?””

Evelyn reached into a drawer.

She pulled out a photograph.

A baby.

Me.

A tiny baby wrapped in a white blanket.

I smiled.

“That’s me.””

“Yes.””

Then she turned the photo over.

There was writing.

One sentence.

My hands shook as I read it.

*The baby survived. They don’t know.*

I looked up.

“Who didn’t know?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with fear.

“The people who wanted you gone.””

Daniel stood.

“What are you saying?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your niece was never supposed to survive.””

The room went silent.

I didn’t understand.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

“Why?””

“Because the truth is…”

She paused.

“The night you were born, someone tried to make sure you never left the hospital.””

My fingers went cold.

Mommy.

Daddy.

The bracelet.

The secrets.

All of it.

Connected to me.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked toward the window.

Then whispered:

“The person who ordered it…”

A knock interrupted her.

Everyone froze.

Three slow knocks.

The same knock.

Daniel stood.

“No.””

Evelyn’s face lost all color.

Because she knew that knock.

She whispered:

“He found us.””

The door handle moved.

Daniel stepped in front of me.

Mr. Bennett reached for his phone.

Victor stood silently.

And then the door opened.

A man walked inside.

A man I had never seen before.

But Evelyn recognized him.

Her face turned white.

Because the man standing there was the last person anyone expected.

The man who had signed my birth records.

The man who knew the truth from the beginning.

The man who was supposed to have died before I was born.

Evelyn whispered:

“Your father’s father.””

Everyone froze.

Another ghost from the past.

Another person who wasn’t supposed to be alive.

And he looked directly at me.

Then said:

“Mia.””

His voice was calm.

Almost kind.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

He looked at the bracelet.

“But your mother should have told you the truth.””

A pause.

“The night you were born…”

His eyes hardened.

“Was not the first time someone tried to take you away.””

May you like

He stepped closer.

“It was the second.””
