Chapter 12: The Person Who Held My Mother’s Hand
“The person who helped me…”
Victor’s voice echoed through the cabin.
Everyone waited.
Nobody breathed.
I looked at Daniel.
I looked at Mr. Bennett.
I looked at the phone where Daddy was still listening.
Everyone already knew.
Or maybe they were afraid they knew.
Victor slowly turned his eyes toward the door.
Then he said:
“Your mother’s doctor.””
The silence afterward felt strange.
Because it wasn’t relief.
It was confusion.
A doctor?
Not Aunt Clara.
Not Daniel.
Not someone in our family.
A doctor.
Mr. Bennett frowned.
“Her doctor?””
Victor smiled.
“Yes.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because her doctor helped her.””
Victor tilted his head.
“Did he?””
Daniel’s face changed.
I saw it.
The smallest movement.
A memory.
A doubt.
“You’re lying.””
Victor walked toward the table.
“I have spent years being called a liar.””
He looked at the bracelet.
“I think everyone deserves to hear the truth.””
Mr. Bennett’s voice became sharp.
“Why should we believe anything you say?””
“You shouldn’t.””
Victor looked at him.
“But you should ask questions.””
That was the problem.
Questions.
Mommy always said questions mattered.
But questions were scary.
Because sometimes they opened doors you couldn’t close again.
I held my teddy bear.
“Who was Mommy’s doctor?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Dr. Harris.””
I looked at him.
“You know him?””
Daniel nodded.
“He treated your mother during her illness.””
“Was he nice?””
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.””
That answer bothered me.
Because he didn’t say it like he believed it.
He said it like he was remembering something he wanted to forget.
Victor noticed.
“Tell her.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Stop.””
“Tell Mia what happened.””
“I said stop.””
“Tell her about the night your sister died.””
My heart stopped.
The night Mommy died.
The night everyone avoided talking about.
The night that had always felt like a locked door.
I looked at Daniel.
“Uncle Daniel?””
He closed his eyes.
“I wasn’t there.””
Victor smiled.
“Exactly.””
Daniel opened his eyes.
“What?””
“You weren’t there.””
Victor stepped closer.
“But Dr. Harris was.””
Mr. Bennett looked at Victor.
“What are you suggesting?””
“I’m suggesting that everyone blamed the wrong person.””
Daniel’s voice became angry.
“You’re trying to escape.””
“No.””
Victor looked at him.
“I’m trying to explain why your sister hid the evidence.””
He pointed at the bracelet.
“She didn’t hide it from me.””
Everyone became still.
“She hid it from the person she trusted most.””
I felt a chill.
“Who?””
Victor didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at the teddy bear in my arms.
“She hid it because she knew that person would look for it.””
I hugged the teddy bear tighter.
“Why?””
“Because that person knew what was inside.””
Mr. Bennett opened the folder.
“Let’s slow down.””
He looked at Victor.
“You claim Dr. Harris was involved.””
“Yes.””
“Do you have proof?””
Victor smiled.
“I have more than proof.””
He reached into his coat.
Daniel immediately moved.
“What are you doing?””
Victor pulled out a small device.
Not a weapon.
A recorder.
He placed it on the table.
“Your mother recorded a conversation.””
Everyone froze.
“Where did you get that?”” Mr. Bennett asked.
Victor looked at the recorder.
“She gave it to me.””
Nobody believed him.
Especially Daniel.
“Why would my sister give you evidence against yourself?””
Victor’s expression changed.
Because for the first time…
He looked tired.
“Because she thought I could change.””
The room became quiet.
That answer sounded almost human.
Almost.
Mr. Bennett picked up the recorder.
“How do we know this is real?””
“You don’t.””
Victor looked at me.
“But Mia deserves to hear her mother.””
My heart hurt.
Because no matter how many times I heard Mommy’s voice…
It never felt like enough.
Mr. Bennett pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then:
A sound.
A door closing.
A woman breathing.
Mommy.
My entire body froze.
“Mia?””
Daniel looked at me.
But I couldn’t answer.
Because there she was.
Again.
My mother.
Her voice came from the tiny recorder.
“Victor, you need to listen to me.””
The room became completely silent.
Victor’s face changed.
The recording continued.
“You think this is about money.””
A pause.
“It isn’t.””
Mommy’s voice sounded tired.
But strong.
“This is about what you did to my family.””
Victor stared at the recorder.
“You’re asking me to confess.””
“No.””
Mommy answered.
“I’m asking you to stop.””
Nobody moved.
“You have already taken enough.””
The recording crackled.
Then another voice appeared.
A man’s voice.
Dr. Harris.
“I don’t think you understand your situation.””
Daniel’s face went pale.
Mommy continued:
“I understand perfectly.””
“You’re sick.””
“I’m dying.””
The words hurt.
But Mommy didn’t sound afraid.
“And that means I have nothing left to lose.””
The recording went quiet.
Then Dr. Harris spoke.
“You should have stopped looking.””
My hand covered my mouth.
Stopped looking.
For what?
Mommy answered:
“I found the records.””
Victor looked down.
Everyone listened.
“The money transfers.””
“Yes.””
“The fake accounts.””
Silence.
“The medication changes.””
The room froze.
Daniel whispered:
“What?””
Mr. Bennett looked shocked.
Medication changes.
Mommy’s illness.
Could someone have made it worse?
The recording continued.
Dr. Harris said:
“You don’t know what you’re accusing me of.””
Mommy laughed softly.
“I know exactly.””
The sound broke my heart.
Because it sounded like she was tired.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
“You changed my treatment.””
Daniel stood.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He looked like he couldn’t believe what he heard.
The recording continued.
“You told my family I was getting worse naturally.””
Dr. Harris said nothing.
“You lied.””
Then:
“You worked with Victor.””
Nobody spoke.
Victor closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“Why?””
Dr. Harris finally answered.
“Because some people need to be controlled.””
Mommy’s voice became cold.
“I should have known.””
“Known what?””
“That you weren’t treating me.””
A pause.
“You were managing me.””
I felt sick.
The room felt smaller.
Mommy.
My mommy.
Someone hurt her.
Someone who was supposed to help her.
The recording continued.
Dr. Harris spoke again.
“You have no proof.””
Mommy answered:
“I do.””
“What?””
“The bracelet.””
Everyone looked at my wrist.
“The bracelet contains the backup file.””
Daniel whispered:
“The bracelet…”
Mommy continued:
“If anything happens to me, Mia will have the truth.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Then Victor said:
“She knew.””
Mr. Bennett looked at him.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“You heard this conversation.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you stop him?””
Victor looked down.
The answer took a long time.
“Because I was a coward.””
That surprised everyone.
Daniel stared.
“You admit it?””
Victor nodded.
“I thought protecting the family name mattered more than protecting my daughter-in-law.””
He looked at me.
“I was wrong.””
I didn’t know what to feel.
Because he was the person who caused pain.
But he was also the person who brought the truth.
Mommy always said people were complicated.
I never understood that.
Now I did.
Mr. Bennett stood.
“We need to find Dr. Harris.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know where he is.””
Everyone looked at him.
“How?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“He contacted me.””
“When?””
“After Mia was moved.””
My stomach dropped.
“Why didn’t you tell us?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because he said he knew who was responsible.””
“For what?””
Daniel swallowed.
“He said he knew who killed your mother.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then at Victor.
Then at the bracelet.
“He said…”
Before he finished, the lights went out.
Again.
Everyone froze.
Not fear this time.
Recognition.
Because this had happened before.
Someone was here.
The door handle moved.
Daniel stepped in front of me.
But this time…
He wasn’t alone.
Victor moved beside him.
I stared.
The man who hurt our family…
Was standing beside the man who tried to save me.
Both protecting me.
The door opened.
A figure stood outside.
A familiar voice spoke.
“You finally found the truth.””
Everyone froze.
Because the voice wasn’t Dr. Harris.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone we knew.
Someone who had been helping us.
Someone who had been searching for the truth with us.
The person stepped into the light.
And whispered:
“I’m sorry, Mia.””
My heart stopped.
May you like
Because the person standing there…
Was Mr. Bennett.
