Chapter 9: The Truth No One Could Hide
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
The message on my phone burned into my mind.
*He wants Malik.*
Not Evelyn.
Not Daniel.
Not the company.
Me.
I looked at the picture again.
My mother stood beside Victor’s car, but she wasn’t tied up or surrounded by people.
She looked angry.
Not afraid.
That detail confused me.
“Wait,” I whispered.
Everyone looked at me.
“My mom isn’t scared.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“What?””
I zoomed in on the picture.
“She’s looking at someone.””
Marcus took the phone from my hand.
He studied the image carefully.
Then his expression changed.
“Malik is right.””
Daniel frowned.
“What do you see?””
Marcus pointed at the corner of the picture.
“Her hand.””
I looked closer.
My mother’s hand was partially hidden behind her jacket.
She was holding something.
A small object.
“What is that?”” I asked.
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
“A phone.””
My heart jumped.
“She has her phone?””
“Yes.””
I immediately called her.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then she answered.
“Malik.””
I almost collapsed from relief.
“Mom, are you okay?””
“Yes.””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Where are you?””
“I’m outside.””
“Are you with Victor?””
A pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
Everyone heard.
The room became silent.
“Mom, get away from him.””
“Malik, listen to me.””
“No. Just leave.””
“I can’t.””
My chest tightened.
“What do you mean?””
She lowered her voice.
“Because Victor didn’t bring me here.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He came to me.””
Nobody moved.
My mother continued.
“He thought I would be easy to scare.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She was listening carefully.
“What happened?””
“He told me you were making a mistake.””
I clenched my fist.
“And what did you say?””
My mother laughed softly.
A familiar laugh.
The same one she used when I was younger and tried to protect her.
“I told him he picked the wrong family.””
I almost smiled.
Even in danger, she was still my mother.
Then she said something that changed everything.
“Malik, Victor isn’t trying to hurt me.””
I frowned.
“Then what does he want?””
“He wants me to convince you to stop.””
The room went quiet.
I understood.
Victor thought my weakness was my family.
He thought fear would make me abandon the truth.
But he didn’t know my mother.
She had spent her whole life teaching me not to run from what was right.
“Mom, leave now.””
“I will.””
“When?””
“When you finish what you started.””
I closed my eyes.
That was the most terrifying and comforting thing she could have said.
My mother wasn’t waiting to be saved.
She was waiting for me to finish.
The call ended.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Your mother is remarkable.””
I nodded.
“She always has been.””
Marcus walked toward the conference room.
“We need to move.””
The emergency board meeting had already started.
The room was filled with executives, investors, and lawyers.
People who had spent years protecting Carter Mobility.
People who now looked uncertain.
Victor stood near the front.
Of course he did.
He looked completely comfortable.
Like he belonged there.
Like he had already won.
When Evelyn entered, conversations stopped.
Victor smiled.
“There she is.””
Evelyn walked forward.
“You wanted a meeting.””
“Yes.””
He looked around.
“The board has concerns.””
One board member cleared his throat.
“Evelyn, this situation has become complicated.””
“Because someone inside this company betrayed it.””
Victor immediately interrupted.
“Careful.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Careful?””
“Yes.””
He smiled.
“Accusations without proof can destroy reputations.””
I almost laughed.
The irony was unbelievable.
Then Marcus stepped forward.
“We have proof.””
Everyone turned.
Victor’s expression changed slightly.
Marcus placed documents on the table.
“Financial transfers. Deleted files. False reports.””
Victor looked at him.
“You.””
“Yes.””
“You were always weak.””
Marcus stared back.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“I was wrong.””
That surprised everyone.
Marcus continued.
“And today, I’m correcting that.””
Daniel placed the notebook beside the documents.
“This belonged to my father.””
Victor looked at it.
For the first time, real fear appeared on his face.
Only for a second.
But everyone saw it.
Evelyn noticed.
“You know what’s inside.””
Victor said nothing.
The room became tense.
Then Victor laughed.
“You think this changes anything?””
He looked around.
“You really think people care about old notes and accusations?””
He pointed toward the executives.
“They care about stability.””
Then he looked at Evelyn.
“You built this company.””
A pause.
“But I saved it.””
“No,” Daniel said.
Victor ignored him.
“I made the decisions you were too emotional to make.””
Evelyn’s eyes hardened.
“And that is why you failed.””
Victor smiled.
“Why?””
“Because you never understood the difference between leadership and control.””
The room went silent.
Then one of the lawyers stood.
“Mr. Hale.””
Victor turned.
“Yes?””
“We received additional evidence.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“What evidence?””
The lawyer looked at Evelyn.
“Security footage from the original repair shop.””
My heart stopped.
The lawyer continued.
“The footage shows Calvin Reed knowingly falsifying repairs.””
Victor remained still.
“And?””
“And your company account paid him.””
The room exploded with whispers.
Victor finally lost his calm.
“That proves nothing.””
The lawyer opened another file.
“It proves everything.””
He looked at the board.
“The payments began shortly after Daniel Carter discovered the fraud ten years ago.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn looked at Victor.
“You didn’t just steal from customers.””
Her voice became quiet.
“You tried to erase my son.””
Victor stared at her.
May you like
And for the first time…
He looked afraid.
